It's not just game developers though, this is a huge problem in all parts of media. Like Adventure Time, (something I blame for why modern cartoons are such trash )was made by Pendleton Ward and the main character's name was going to be pen, the network told him to change it because it sounded dumb. Netflix She-Ra is all about being an insecure lesbian because the showrunner is an insecure lesbian. Look up "Glenpool" at Marvel Comics. They actually made an extremely cringey/ not funny self-insertion "wacky humor" comic for one of the editors. Every time she changed her hair the character in the book will change their hair to look exactly the same. I think there's a subtle difference between putting something your familiar with in a character, and just outright creating a paper doll ego masturbation character. Hideaki Anno, who directed Evangalion, was going through depression at the time, and it shows. I think it really depends on the person and yandev has neither the spine or faith in his shitty creation to make it work. I've posted some of my shit before, but I've kept it in the dedicated /agdg/ and demo day threads. Plenty of other anons have and it hasn't been an issue. And while you'll always have people jumping in and saying "your game is shit, kill yourself," it's good for getting feedback on what works and what needs work. My view is that a creator needs to be open to outside review and criticism to find what is broken with his game, but also must have enough faith in his vision to not let the outsiders dictate how to fix a problem when one is discovered. And if you're able to filter the actual criticism from the shitposting, people on imageboards will be direct and tell you exactly what they think.

As someone who has done this I can explain this phenomenon. It's part narcissism, part escapism, and all lack of creativity.
People who do this type of thing want to escape their own life by living a surrogate "better" fantasy life. The problem is that they are weak people without any REAL life experiences or struggles. This means that they have a difficult time imagining a life external to their own, so they cant really come up with one that isn't them to roleplay as, as a form of escapism. They just end up hamfisting themselves into everything they do like retards instead of breaking the self up into different aspects and bashing them against each other. Because they have no real experience, they are not multifaceted people.
