Anyone else here is/was a Nintendo fan, but just depressed with the state (or rather, the direction) they're going in?

I was a Sega/Playstation kid growing up, my family was too poor for much else, but I remember playing the N64 at a friend's house and being enraptured by many of the games on the system, like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Banjo-Kazooie. It seemed to unique and fun, and eventually we got a Gamecube (and later a Wii when that was the big thing). I also got a Game Boy, an Advance, and a DS, though it was mostly for Pokemon. I've always really loved how these was a level of quality with there games that always felt like there was a quality check to them. A lot of their games were pioneers at best, and at there worst still had some amount of merit to soul to them, even if it was pitiable. The other thing I admired about them was how tight-nit their franchises felt. They all felt interwoven and connected, never fully forgotten even after their time.

I think around the Wii U era and Iwata's death was when I started to get disillusioned. This was around the time they started heavily censoring their games, embracing the worst industry trends of DLC, and flirting with the mobile market. While you could say "Nintendo has always censored their games!" it was starting to look like the practice was dying off, then it came back and fucking hard, with even minor budget games getting censored. Nintendo also during the Wii era had forgone DLC, yet it started appearing first on the 3DS, and then later with Amiibo, obnoxious physical DLC.

The Switch feels like a bitter-sweet event. On one hand, it seems to have sparked some great games from them, and they finally have capable third party support. On the other, the Switch forgos all the gimmicks the Wii and Wii U had, the wii-mote aiming and dual screen. While you can say these were gimmicks, they had potential to be used right and did get used properly in some games. The Wii U's death in particular I always found to be cruel as the touch screen never got a chance to prove it's worth despite the DS line proving that it could bring about unique gameplay designs. And now, with the death of the DS line, it seems dual-screen games like Kirby Canvas Curse, Etrian Odyssey, and others are dead in the water, at least in their current form. The fact that the Switch abandons any pretense of innovation/gimmick feels like an admission of defeat. This along with the paid-online, the slaughtering of many of their franchises (Smash looks like it's going to be a shill-fest of third party characters, many franchises are getting the mobile treatment which means certain death, other franchises receive sudden or unjust deaths and likely will remain in such a state, and those that don't, well fuck look at the state of Fire Emblem and Pokemon.) And then, just as the icing on the cake, soyboys swarm and make themselves diehard Nintendo fans. They can't tell you the name of any franchise that isn't in Smash (unless it's a highly requested character like Isaac) but damn if they won't tell you their favorite Earthbound-inspired RPG while buying 50 "hidden gems" SNES games they'll never play or care about.

There's always sticking with their classic games, keeping to the NES-3DS and just pretending a bunch of their later games never happened, but it'll always carry a bittersweet taste to it, knowing what was to come. Their recent comments about wanting to be like Disney made me realize just how bad things will probably get. I don't know if Nintendo died when the last Nintendo Power came out, or when Iwata died (he never trained a successor, unlike how he was trained to take over Nintendo due to his untimely death sadly), but it certainly has, and it's sad. People used to shit on the Wii era but damn if I don't miss it, people weren't aware of just what would come afterwards.

I've been wanting to get this off my chest for a while now and now I realize it's somewhat incoherent but it's late at night, and I hope there are people out there who can relate. Am I the only one like this, are there others? If you're a "I always hated Nintendo" guy that's fine, but please don't derail this thread. This is more about being tired and disappointed with the direction the company is heading, not being against the company in its entirety.

It makes me upset when I think about how much money Pokemon rakes in for Game Freak but they don't do shit with it in their games. Sure they have 3D models (with the older pokemon models having bland and boring idle animations where they just fucking stand there and rock on their feet, and dont match up well to whatever move they use) they have cutscenes (that barely move, take up 2/3s of the game time and are overwhelmimgly shit) and they take the time to implement PvP in every gen (which is becoming increasingly shit because they cant actually balance pokemon or make more than a few pokemon viable to use), but they never use the money they make to innovate. A few better graphics here, a nice background here, but nothing groundbreaking. Them rehashing Kanto for the 4th time in LGPE just screams to me that they dont give a single shit about making a fun game.

How did you become a Nintendo fan as someone who was a Sega kid

Sega was always the cooler ones I wasn't aware of it though for a long time as Sega marketing never really touched my area, everyone always knew and talked about either Nintendo, or later Sony and Microsoft

faggot

Anyways, at least they're being more lenient towards 3rd party devs this generation. They're still cancerous in many ways of course, but right now they're the best of the console duopoly in Japan right now and they're showing a surprising amount of balls by allowing some unusually raunchy stuff compared to their entire past.

I hate the fact that Nintendo killed their dedicated handheld line for the Switch though, and as a result I have no reason to buy anything from them unless they create a a new dedicated handheld, or a smaller Switch model that can fit in your pockets and has a better battery life and build quality. I also hate how they effectively killed the 3DS with the Switch. All its support effectively went out the window, though how much of it was intentional or unintentional, I can't say. What I can say is that its very frustrating to me, someone who loves handhelds dearly.

I used to be Nintendo all the way, but my breaking point was AM2R. I all but vowed to avoid supporting their first-party shit then. The fact that all their games got way worse didn't help either.

I felt like you did for a while, tired and disappointed, but that turned to anger and rage after a time.

Iwata did all he could I believe, but he was a single man with a board of directors and people to please, and he could only resist industry trends in the face of overwhelming cash and money-grabbings. The Sm4sh DLC was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for Nintendo's integrity in regards to that sort of thing, and the paid online thing is just an insulting icing on the cake.

Some of my greatest times came from Nintendo games, IPs, or Nintendo-published games. Fire Emblem 7, Link to the Past, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Darkness, etc.

It sucks that they've become so… mediocre, but ironically it feels like the whole industry has become even worse cancer in the span of the past 9 months. Its frankly incredible.

>Steam and Sony's censorship crusades

>All the AAAs doing such cancerous schemes that they're collapsing

>Microsoft being general failures as usual (I don't think they've done anything, but that's been the story of their gaming division for the past 6 years anyways aside from a few bad cancellations like Scalebound)

2089c3  No.16012811

Nintendo has had it's ups and downs just like every other developer that has made a good game at one point. Nothing is as black and white as you make it out to be. That having been said I might have a slightly different opinion than you because, despite buying Nintendo consoles, I tend to pirate most of my games on those systems. I think this allows me to make more objective views on a game, rather than having buyers remorse and either defending the game or shitting on it irrationally. Take BotW for example, while your average user of /v/ would say the game's shit, I feel like most people who actually played it on /v/ would say mechanically the game is all there, it's just the actual game design isn't. And really, I think that's the problem with most modern video games. They're getting to be too huge to manage everything effectively, even with modern software development techniques. Something doesn't quite click, really. Then again, if you're an incompetent developer (Game Freak) you can fuck everything up anyway, or if you're hypercompetent (HAL) you can usually get away with it. Although even in HAL's case it's clear they didn't finish Kirby Star Allies, although the updates are nice they don't really fix the framerate issues. I guess another problem with the Switch is Nintendo is trying to put every game on it as quickly as possible and that might pay off, but it doesn't bode well for the longer lifetime. Take the Wii, what even came out for it after Mario Galaxy 2 and DKCR? And the Wii lasted two more fucking years, pretty much. I don't think Nintendo is really in a bad position at the moment, at best they're as incompetent as they've been for the last 15 years at least. While you're probably correct that maybe they're going in a worse direction, I don't quite see it yet. However with a new president things could go very wrong, so I'd be cautious. I guess what I'm saying is play video games you like, and try ones you think you'd like. Also, if you haven't, play The Wonderful 101. You can probably get a Wii U for like 12 bucks because nobody fucking wants them, plus all you need is an eShop game to hack any Wii U. I don't know if CEMU will work well with Wonderful 101 due to the gamepad segments and CEMU becoming a BotW emulator. I'm not sure how much sense this makes but whatever.

Nintendo is unforgivable, if only because of how actively they attempt to destroy any and all fan content that could provide competition or alternative sources of entertainment.

I never felt the disillusion with Nintendo as other anons had, and it confused me somewhat. I agree with most reasons for why they're objectively not a good company minus fangames, those faggots asked for it. I realized at some point that this is simply because I never had as strong an attachment to Nintendo as others. Just a simple thought what people tend to really love about Nintendo, it's always the games that I never gave a shit about. The SNES era, especially Mario World, LttP and Super Metroid, is what most "Nintendo fans", whether here or elsewhere jerk themselves over, and I can't honestly say I like any of those.

Hell, just a full list of series really did it for me.

Metroid, Star Fox, Pikmin, Pokemon, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, Mother, Smash, Golden Sun and so on? Never gave a shit. I tried, for most of them, and I never liked it. Mario Kart? CTR is better. Xenoblade? Average. And so on.

I didn't grow up with Nintendo, so I suppose it makes sense that I don't have any real deep-seeded nostalgia for them. But it is interesting, since I do have some sort of attachment to them, and I'm not sure where from. From a sheer quantity level, they've probably put out the most games I could say I at least like, so that might just be it. Couple that with the characters being recognizable to the point where you're almost forced to have an attachment to them, and Mario 64 being one of my favorite games ever. The answer probably lies somewhere in there.

That's not to say I'm not disappointed with Nintendo. That's to say that, by the time I found the games of their that I do enjoy, I knew that they weren't gonna make any more like them, because the series were quite long running. An example, Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask for Zelda, Mario Land 2 and Mario 64 for Mario and Mario RPG for, well, Mario RPGs. Maybe I'm fortunate to not see them fall from grace, or whatever.

Just some thoughts. Sage for being a rambling mess of shit.

Mario Odyssey is the best game in the last 10 years. If you fucking disagree you're a cock-swallowing faggot and here's why.

You want to turn into all the beasts in Mario and be those pieces of shit? Well then go ahead you fucking degenerate. Want to see if there's something over yonder you missed while you've been running around like a dipshit? In all the previous games you had moments of "what if" that ended in nothing but Mario Odyssey seems like it was designed with the what-ifs in mind. At every turn I was finding moons. The story itself is easy to finish but anyone bitching about a lack of difficulty hasn't played the end-game and the end-game has always been where Mario shines (see Super Mario World). It's a dumb fucking game with a dumb premise and I appreciate it for what it is. Once it kicks into overdrive it never lets go and it refuses to be another Sunshine lazing about talking about all that delicious end-game content without shit to show off. It is a damn shame that it's the only game worth playing on the console but that's what you get for buying a console just to play Mario. It also helps that Mario moves like a tortured ant responding fastidiously to every hot knife. The game feels like joy and it plays well.

Hell if I had one complaint it would be that it's too full of shit. Nintendo calm the fuck down I don't have time for all this shit. Also the Sand Kingdom is worse than all the good qualities combined and if I never saw it again I'd be happy. Mexicans truly make everything worse.

I don't buy into brand loyalty or anything, but eighth gen on has been a mix of lack of decent third party that are properly exclusive when it's come to my tangential interest (no WiiU or Switch here, and I wouldn't have a 3DS if a friend didn't give me their old one). Which to be fair, isn't just a problem Nintendo has; Microsoft and Sony do as well, ever since things started getting so multiplat heavy (well, noticeably heavier, even compared to sixth gen) in seventh gen. I mean, sure, you can get games on more systems, but it's harder to answer the question of which is personally worth buying to access them, if not just pirating for PC/whatever's got more convenient hacks. Doesn't help either that the big three are all fucking the customer on multiple fronts, be it censorship (I know Sony's considered the big shitter but I still don't trust NoA after the 3DS/WiiU era), attempts at spying/data collection, paid online when you already pay for your internet, etc.

Seventh gen was better for than this (handhelds at least faring better than consoles; DS had a pretty good library, if one buried under shovelware, to which I don't consider the 3DS' to compare to), and sixth gen better still. And I still keep my modded Wii around for emulation, Gamecube, and the handful Wii games were of actual personal interest.

This so fucking much, not to mention how they strip beloved features from games that everyone loved. I understand wanting everygame to be unique in some ways, but there was a decent amount of features that should of stuck. Like Battle Frontier, Contests, Pokemon able to follow you, and the device that gave you the ability to rebattle trainers. I am forgetting a few more things but you know what I mean. Also, for how long have fans wanted a difficulty option? Especially of recent as the games get more and more dumbed down. Kids today are as retarded as we where then, so I highly doupt they couldn't adapt to the difficulty (not that the older games where that hard anyway, but where certainly challenging at times). I am so fustrated with the series I am done, and glad because Pokemon Let's Go looks like two steps forward l, 10 steps back once again.

012d55  No.16013631

I don't know if it's just me growing older, but Nintendo games have been very lacklustre lately. Mario Odyssey was okay but nothing amazing like others have been spouting. The last Nintendo game that made me feel hooked was BotW, but even that has a lot of noticable flaws. To me Nintendo in the past 10 years has been like this: they release a bunch of mainline mediocre games, but every once in a while there's that one game that gives you a sense of wonder and novelty and I remember why Nintendo keeps me coming back.

Last year in particular was atrocious though. As someone who doesn't really give two shits about Smash, I find it almost unforgivable that they released nothing put Wii U ports in the first half of 2018 and then just expected Smash to tide people over for the rest of the year. With their focus on mobile gaming I can't see it getting any better. Metroid Prime 4 is the only thing I have any hope for because, let's be honest, we all know Pokemon is going to be shit and lazy as usual.

Nintendo has changed, and I think that Smash Ultimate is the first time I've really noticed it. The only thing that's really ultimate about it is the roster, which they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel now at this point. I never even play as maybe more than 5 fighters, and towards the end of the reveals it was all just literally whos. World of Light was an 8 hour chore and nowhere near as good as Subspace Emissary, and the absence of Target Practice and Home Run Contest really calls into question why it's called "Ultimate" in the first place. Shouldn't they be adding new features and gamemodes instead of removing ones everyone loved? 99% sure they're going to release it as DLC, the jews they are. And whoever thought removing taunting online would stop it altogether is an idiot, just spam crouch when you get a KO to piss off your opponent. Try and stop that, I'd love to see it.

Nintendo Online is also kind of disappointing at the moment. So I can play NES games now? But I need an internet connection, paid subscription, and only a small library that's occasionally updated? Why wouldn't I use my hacked PSP or my fucking Samsung Galaxy to do the same for free and with every game, including other consoles? Save data backup could hardly be counted as a feature worth paying for, and the fucking Online app doesn't even work on my phone. The only positive aspects of it are that's it's more stable than NWC (unless I'm playing against Paco in Honduras) and that I rarely get matched into a game that's not one of my preferences, but even that shouldn't be an issue in the first place.

Remember when Nintendo and every other company just made good vidya, and that was all that mattered?

I can relate, OP.

Was a hardcore NES/SNES kid growing up. I had a Sega Genesis/Sega Channel too, but my SNES simply saw so much more time and love from me, there just isn't really any comparison.

Then the N64 came out and it was such a fucking underwhelming shitstain of a console. Near empty library save for a handful of good games. I went full PCfag that same year, which turned out to be pretty serendipitous; but as a result, I pretty much missed the Playstation and console eras following. I did pick up a 3DS back in 2013, and a Switch last Christmas.

I like the concept of Nintendo stuff, but I feel like for all of the sperging and stuff as there is with Smash, etc. - I'm playing a lot of Switch games, but I'm just not really putting much time into them. Maybe an hour for each at most.

I feel pretty disengaged, and I think that I'm too enamored with the idea of Nintendo stuff, but actually playing that stuff just feels empty to me. I don't know if it's just me, or if Nintendo lost its soul somewhere along the way, but the magic just isn't there.

Feels pretty fucking bad.

I would say the start of Nintendo's descent would be the Wii. Why? It broke expectations of recurring of "'series gets a new console sequel for new console hardware''' for the fans. Obviously your Mario, Zelda got sequels continuing on from a line unbroken from the NES but that line would end for many other series.

>SNES: F-Zero, Starfox

>N64: Wave Race, 1080, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis WR did technically start on Game Boy, but we're going with console sequels

It can't be denied that there was other new console series/revivals during the Wii era like Wii Sports/Fit/Play/Music or Punch Out or Sin & Punishment or Excite Truck/Bots/Bike, but the the lack of those middle tier series really pissed off fans considering that many of them still don't have original entires after a decade.

Reading interviews with Masuda, the problem with Pokemon seems to be the fear that if a kid gets stuck, they stop playing and never buy another Pokemon game again, so the games challenge is reduced.

Obviously when the first game came out they didn't know what would be difficult or not for players. I did the dumb thing of going through Rock Tunnel without HM Flash.

The only reason GF gets away with it is that game journalists either don't remember Stadium series/never played them so they don't compare the two animation battle styles and don't mention it in their reviews as a negative.

I bought a Switch to play Smash and I'm regretting it as much as I regret buying a 3DS in 2013 to play the Hoenn remake that hadn't been announced at that point. Omega Ruby ended up being a soulless, barren cashgrab.

Smash has beautiful animations and feels great to play, but a massive dearth of content. If you don't want to play online, you have little to do – and in a game that automatically sorts you with bad players if you want to have fun and screw around with characters you don't know, there's little incentive to experiment. You can't even switch characters between matches against the same opponent, which I find incredibly annoying.

Kirby, which is difficult to do poorly, delivered a short and clearly rushed entry in Star Allies. The campaign only takes a couple of hours and the game is completely centered around the unbalanced team system. It's only a minor step up from the entirely forgettable Rainbow Curse. Robobot was fun, but given all the shovelware the team has put out I'm rapidly losing faith in their ability to produce another fun platformer.

Breath of the Wild is a classic example of a game with massive potential that completely under-delivers. There's a lot of interesting mechanics and ideas that are overshadowed by the mediocre effort put into the plot and the infuriating durability system. I've heard people use the old metaphor of 'wide as an ocean, deep as puddle,' and having just beaten the game, I completely agree. Speaking as someone that picked up Okami HD and finally sat down to play through it in its entirety, the sheer level of detail and interesting shit they crammed into that game left me feeling awestruck by how low standards have gotten. I'm blown away that people can consider BotW a 10/10.

All of this doesn't touch on their poor online service and how shit it is. I don't feel like the Switch is wasted money since it's given me the opportunity to play lots of ports like Okami and a good chunk of the Megaman games, but it's not delivering solid first-party titles. Well, aside from Mario Odyssey, I guess, but I've never been one for 3D Mario.

The only thing that hits a "perfect" by Nintendo anymore to me is Splatoon and I don't think a Splatoon 3 is happening anytime soon or is going to be anything more than a beefier Splatoon 2 which is already a beefier Splatoon. Pokemon ended with 5th gen, Mario and Zelda are probably doomed to be above average games with "unique" aspects that bring down the overall quality but help avoid repetition that would make the series stale. I doubt they'll be able to keep Animal Crossing feeling fresh for much longer either. SSBU was probably rushed to guarantee Switch profit, but I very much appreciate what looks to be a "final celebration" with all the fighters and with almost all the stages. gib poke floats.

It's a sign of the times more than anything, people are okay with buying shit. The "experience" they buy doesn't have to innovate or even be fun enough compared to everything else. I think guys like us are anomalies in the system, we stuck around with our franchises while everyone else spent their time elsewhere, so we have a sort of special bond with our vidya. However, more profit comes from more sales and almost everyone wants more profit. This then leads to the fact that multiple developers have been looking at the rest of the Asian market, and you can bet your butt that games may be made with Chinese interests in mind. Your going to have more "universal" games that probably become more and more soulless all for the sake of profit.

"Indie games" are a place of refuge and so are any devs crazy enough to try to do cool things (Platinum comes to mind), but even then there's a huge problem, the destruction of "game culture." In other words, if you played NES games as a kid or had an interest in them, you'd probably end up on some kind of forum with like minded people that were great to be around, there would be stuff to learn and you would have a common culture. Game franchises helped facilitate this. However, now you have games that exist to generate revenue. (most mobile shit) They have no substance, nothing to love about video games is there. Are you going to relate with someone who loves gatcha shit? Do you want to? What I'm getting at is that video games have become so big that in order to be a part of a "common culture" within gaming means that you'll probably be in either a tiny niche with very little diversity Meant in the sense that you'll learn about new things that you might just end up liking. or some fanbase that has no standards and will outcast you for having the wrong opinion about some mediocre game that failed to amuse you.

This is only on the level of video games, imagine applying these thoughts in a grander, real world sense. Everything is safe, there's no need to be unique, pioneer, strike out or innovate. The system will try to crush you, either directly or indirectly. I think one big problem is that anything "fresh" ends up being locked in niche status, so the meta never changes.

Splatoon is decent, I'll give you that. Pokemon gen 6 was shit, and gen 7 looked promising at the start, like maybe they'd pivot into telling decent stories, but then it fell into all the same old traps in the ultra editions. Let's go was shit, but it's not a mainline game, so not all hope is lost. With Masuda gone, the future is up in the air. We need to wait and see how gen 8 turns out before passing judgment there I think. The latest Mario game is one of the best imo, they seemed to have recaptured what people liked with 64 and sunshine, I'm hopeful the next game will improve on it further. Saying it's "doomed" is a bit ridiculous. Zelda BOTW was also quite good. After years of being criticized for repeating the same formula, they tried something new, and it fit pretty well. But, BOTW still had a shitload of shortcomings. The next release isn't a shoe-in for being good, but the outlook is better than it was after the release of say, Skyward Sword. AC doesn't need to do much tbh. I don;t have much to say about it. We'll see how it goes. Now, SSBU I have a lot to say about. While I don't believe it was rushed, nor do I believe it's meant to be a final celebration of the franchise, nonw of that matters in terms of what it means for the series direction. Despite some people saying it's just smash 4.5 because it shares a similar artstyle, it plays very differently, has combos again, has brought back some of the old tech, and generally just plays faster than the two games that came before it. A merging of modern smash with melee esque mechanics was what the series needed, and that's the direction we're headed in. Anywho, I only really wanted to reply to the first bit of your post. The rest seems pretty fuckin dumb. Well whatever. Don't align yourself with any brand, and don't assume the future is going to be shit when you haven't been there

"industry", I came across a contest called GBJAM where you're limited to 4 colors and 160x144 resolution. Unlike browsing through a Switch indie store where it's all obviously shit, I actually felt guilty for not taking the time to play them because just looking at them they capture a lot of the wonder I felt when seeing new releases as a kid. I think constraints may be just what developers need to unleash real creativity, and allow them to build something with a small team where they aren't forced to become asset farmers or engine specialists. The best part is there are multiple of these contests each with hundreds of compelling entries, and many of them are even open source so you can easily mod them or fork the project as a basis for your own work!

>Saying it's "doomed" is a bit ridiculous.

Maybe I should clarify a bit. "Doomed" in the sense that it'll keep existing because the formula is loved and has already been refined and all you can do is tweak it . It's fate is sealed. If a degree of volatility is what you want, you aren't going to get much of that from Dragon Quest or Mario. You're probably going to get a good game though. I'm glad Odyssey exists because it's the closest thing I'm getting to a new Banjo and Kazooie and was fun to play. Maybe it's because I played all the other 3D Mario games I wasn't very impressed by it. Just impressed. Mario 64, OoT impressed me greatly.

Next couple of years are going to be interesting for Nintendo, all we have in the future that is a complete mystery is Prime 4 and most of their main IPs are already out. 3DS is nothing more than a cash flow from cheap parents for the rest of it's life. I'm hoping for more new/revisited IPs from them and I'm expecting them to shy away from any more attempts to innovate at Iwata levels and to just become a "good developer and platform that sells" and nothing else. We'll see. Labo and ARMS didn't wow me and Switch doesn't have much in experimental games when compared to both Wiis and DSes. Though the audacity of using cardboard does impress me.

> I'm glad Odyssey exists because it's the closest thing I'm getting to a new Banjo and Kazooie

What? It's like saying Sonic Mania is the closest thing you'll get to a good 2D Mario. The two are similar in only the most surface-level of comparisons.

<Banjo

>a slow, clunky collectathon

>has big spread out worlds

>jumps being quite slow and short

>moveset is limited

>platforming is more horizontal than vertical

<Mario

>quick and fast paced if you want it to be

>worlds are small with a lot of shit to find

>jumps let you get anywhere if you're good

>moveset is very versatile, except for Galaxy because it's shit

>platforming is more vertical than horizontal

I don't think it's much of an exaggeration to say that Odyssey in particular, with the weight and height of Mario's jumps, feels like Banjo running at double speed. Something like A Hat in Time, or, of course, Yooka Laylee, is closer to Banjo. The only game I can easily compare Odyssey to is Mario 64, since very few platformers let you get that speed and versatility, while still being free. Spyro can be fast, but the gliding is slow, and the platforming is heavily horizontal.

>The only thing that hits a "perfect" by Nintendo anymore to me is Splatoon

Indeed. Fix the fucking tick rate, connectivity issues, and balance, please.

>I don't think a Splatoon 3 is happening anytime soon

I have no idea what they're going to do. The game will largely be dead come June or July when Splatfests are over. If they don't at least have an announcement for a Splatoon 3 by the time, then the franchise will likely be dead for a good long while.

>anything more than a beefier Splatoon 2 which is already a beefier Splatoon.

They need to step back a bit. Splatoon 2 is over designed. They need to make things a little more quaint and charming like Splatoon 1. Squid 2 is still a great game, but I get a serious sensation of "This is Splatoon, but even better 'cuz it's the second one!" feeling from the game. I don't want them to escalate it further with Splatoon 3.

What a wonderful series, though. Nintendo needs to do shit like this more often instead of banking on the same shit I've been playing for 25 or 30 years now.

>>16023536

>Giving yourself limitations is a great way to get creative

There's definitely something to the idea of using limitation when designing anything. I remember seeing 3 guys struggle to come up with a level for Little Big Planet with all the tools they had and then just made a giant glass incline to ride the skateboard down which still fucked up because they didn't smooth out one little bump. Alternatively maybe this instance was too many cooks in the kitchen struggling to work together. It probably the reason why Mario Maker limited how many parts you could start with while slowly unlocking more.

>>16022745

>>16024317

Considering Nintendo once per console mentality, Splatoon 3 will be for the next console. The AC/Splatoon dev team are mostly the same bunch. It won't be denied that S2 was just a refined S1 for Switch and didn't really try to "break" new ground like Nintendo seems to demand for their sequels and was probably done by Nintendo realizing that it was a faster option to get a refined S1 version of S2 out in the first 4 months from Switch launch then having longer dev cycle for a more "innovative" Splatoon.

So assuming that the AC/Splatoon team is now shifting focus over to AC Switch (and it's post release support) while probably trying to prototype new ideas for a Splatoon 3 when they have more years to do so before the next Nintendo console.

>Pokémon: Let's Go Director Junichi Masuda also states that Pokémon Go connectivity could come to future titles depending on how the games are received.

>“These games aren’t spin-offs. These are core Pokemon titles. As for whether we would make other games that could connect to Pokemon GO, that will depend on how the games are received. If we hear a lot of people saying that they enjoyed being able to bring Pokemon to these games from Pokemon GO, then we’ll think about maybe having future titles also be able to connect to it.”

When first announced they were also showcased as mainstream titles on video at a live event, something everyone ignores:

>youtube.com/watch?v=aQ_qtyOa5Dg

>at 17:25

>“I’m happy to announce the newest titles in the main-line series of pokémon RPGs, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee.”

They only backtracked it after the backlash of the initial reveal, and everyone else parroted this backtracking. Then when the game's sold well they went back to reaffirm their original narrative as I posted above.

They are core titles, and have a high chance of influencing the mechanics of future Pokemon games, as stated by the director himself.

You fell for the damage controlling, both by the company's and the fan's.

Nintendo has always been a shitty company, who only got their rise strong-arming a market that's gone to shit like now and has mostly shaped the gaming market by how many developers they've burnt, and have spent the better half of the last 20 years implementing shitty console and handheld gimmicks as a middle finger to people who emulate their games, whilst reselling roms themselves at a premium rate over and over with no improvements. I think their petty hatred of their own fanbase is probably the main driving force that stopped them from a full sega tier implosion.

So naturally my youngest sister went to college for acting (and screenwriting which if she doesn't kill herself is probably where she'll end up), my younger brother got into programming but failed to graduate because he couldn't pass Calculus 2 for some reason (he's still working on a monster girl tactics game without a name, I'll have to shill it one of these days), and I've been completely aimless for almost 10 years at this point and am getting into statistics because that seems like something I'm good at that I don't hate 200%. Feel a similar way, Nintendo has quite a few issues and while their fans will voice there anger at them, they don't really band together to actually take a stand against them (like a signed petition against Switch's paid online for instance). The more tech progresses around them, the further the company seems to get left behind dragging it's knuckles (especially in online matters). While they understand what "fun" is they seem to have a real problem trying to sell some of their new IP (ARMS) or not trying to launch "cheap looking" games like 1-2 Switch or Labo at lower price points.

The company really needs more western owned developers (like Retro) to provide a higher output of western style exclusive games because their Japanese studios can't keep up.

>the Switch forgos all the gimmicks the Wii and Wii U had

Just some of them, it even adds in a few things, the split controller means that Nintendo know that everyone who owns the platform has at least two controllers, they also have HD rumble which allows for finer force feedback, allowing games to tell players direction and depth just through rumble, an underused features but a feature that holds value, the Switch also keeps features that do hold value like gyro. That said the Switch actually has one major failure in it's design relative to this, the Switch should have had the functionality to stream video to the Switch dock like a reverse WiiU, this would have given it WiiU's core functionality out of the box, and it would have made it so that every Switch has the functionality for 1 vs 2 asymmetrical gameplay

For me the Switch is the perfect concept for a console, Consoles have continued to become more and more useless as time goes on, but the Switch at it's core gives me functionality that my PC doesn't have, and that's great to see. That said it's been a disappointment so far, the first year was fine but outside of that it's been nothing but a waste of money. The Switch was sold as Nintendo's only platform, and developers even mentioned that it would be the only target for both their home and handheld arms, which leaves a lot of promise for a potential first/second party library, but this hasn't happened, and it doesn't look like this will ever happen. The Switch right now when discounting

I agree that things are disappointing but not entirely in the same way.

>paid online sucks, and I refuse to pay

>there are some control systems that should have been pulled forwards

>third party support is complete shit, most third parties don't see the switch as a real platform and the support that the switch does get are indies found on every other platform, ports of phone games with micro transactions removed, ports of games from a generation or two ago with better versions on other platforms, lazily cut down ports of games from other platforms that look and run like shit but not in the right ways

>nintendo are focusing too much on mobile games

>first party support is less than what was available in the last generation which makes no sense given that the switch has most 3ds devs on it and studios that supported the wiiu had problems adapting to hd development

If I was the sort of person who sold games/consoles My Switch would be long gone, and considering the delay of Metroid Prime 4, I wouldn't call it a bad decision.

The Switch was definitely rushed, but I don't believe that a successor will see any of the Switch's problems fixed, even though Nvidia's Tegra chips are actually very far ahead, and the only ones they are showing appear to be car based, which perhaps means that they are working on a discrete tablet one with an aim towards performance at a low power consumption, that's more wishful thinking though.

>3rd parties though are starting to pick it up in the laziest of ways unfortunately

Fuck third party Switch support, third parties are just using it as a port dumping ground, and indies are treating it like a gold rush, the Switch has well over 1000 games right now and almost all of them are pasionless cash grabs which hold no value, either ports with no real effort put in them that release months after they did on other platforms, ports from a decade ago, ports of phone games with microtransactions removed, or indie games that are on all other platforms but miraculously sell well on the Switch. I think Dragon Quest XI S is the only port to Switch which was actually well handled, models were remade for the Switch version, and the game itself saw strong optimization for Switch hardware, on top of that they are adding new features exclusive to S. The state of Third parties on Switch isn't just the fault of third parties though, Nintendo have a hand in this, they need to be firmer with the way they treat them, things like that Ark port should have never happened, Capcom shouldn't have been able to do a re-release of Street Fighter 2 for Switch while holding onto a better compilation for all platforms the next year, and Indies shouldn't be doing a repeat of Atari/Steam, in fact that was one of the things Nintendo used to be hard on, but have relaxed it to the point where they are just shitting up their own platform.

>Now since sony is completely fucking with devs in every way possible it looks like it'll get a nice boom soonish

I doubt that, we've only seen Omega labyrinth and a few others move over, many IPs are staying with PS4, even though developers are admitting to censorship, the next mainline Senran Kagura is still a PS4 exclusive even though the game is still a while off launching. All that said NoA exist and I don't trust them to not push for censorship of these games in the future.

There's a bit of hearsay that Animal Crossing's release date was leaked for April 29th by a UK Gamestop about a week ago. Usually I'd ignore this kind of shit, but supposedly Nintendo told a wall street journal reporter that they have an "unannounced title that fans would be delighted to know" coming out for the Switch this upcoming fiscal year which, in Japan, starts in April. I'm not sure whether or not Animal Crossing counts as unannounced since all we got was a teaser trailer and no title. But again, this is just hearsay since the stupid chink fuck doesn't say WHO at Nintendo told him this and why. My hope was snuffed out long ago.

Did you play Yoshi's Woolly World or know about the upcoming Crafted World? They weren't that gimmicky, right?

Wanting to be a plumber as a kid doesn't come from a lack of ambition or creativity. Kids aren't born with any concept of stigma, they just want to be something purely because it fascinates them. Comparatively, the kids that said generic things like "I want to be an ASTRONAUT", or "I want to be a DOCTOR" seem uninspired; like they're just blurting out whatever job looks the moast ebin.

You said it yourself dude, just because being an astronaut or a doctor is ebin doesn't make it any less fascinating. I remember when I was a kid I was super autistic about everything space and deep down I desired to be an astronaut. I used to read cross section books of space shuttles and memorise solar-system trivia for days on end. I probably drove my parents up the fucking wall. Most professions related to space travel are geniunely fascinating, just because it's a common dream doesn't make it less legitimate.

It's the kids who say they want to be the president that I disdain. They always grew up to be assholes in my experience.

You're right, I didn't mean to say that a common aspiration is lesser per se, just that my impression is that there's less thought behind it (generally).

I agree. I always found Switch to focus more on convenience than on innovation. I really can't see how the selling point of being able to play home console games on the go, or the Joy-Con's usage is innovative. The former's been done with the PSP/Go and Vita (although these played games tailor-made for them as they were handheld systems) and Sega's Nomad. It's not even a true handheld system by design as the 3DS is, since the handheld mode is just supposed to be serviceable. It's too big, wide and clumsy to hold, but it works, very much like a laptop. This really goes back to the Eurogamer leak from 2016. At first, I was intrigued and very much ectastic about playing something like Mario Kart that looked just like 8 on a portable system, but then I realized, and asked myself "what's so special about it?", since the PSP tried to be something similar (power similar to PS2). I didn't even see the big thing with sharing the Joy-Con to another player. That's convienient, but nothing else.

Back then, I was worried that based on Eurogamer's crappy wording, that it'd be marketed as a handheld system with a TV-out, but thankfully they didn't because they know the opposite would sell much more to the consumer/normalfag. Now, I agree with you as well in regards to the Wii U. I think it's a great little system and I appreciate it a lot. I really enjoyed playing on it and viewed it with my eyes as a consumer, not as an enthusiast. So I focused only on the games and not about the marketing, support and sales that plagued it. I think the GamePad could've been just as breathtaking (and it is, compared to Switch's "gimmicks"), but they really failed to capitalize on it (hello Star Fox Zero). While I can certainly see as the Wii U as a mere result of arrogance and screaming as a corporate product, since I remember Kimishima saying that Nintendo thought they'd sell 100 million Wii U consoles just because the Wii sold well, it's the actually Switch that I view as such. Expensive accessories, nothing that stands out besides the form factor, early announcements of games people have been dying for, paid online, etc. I view it as the manifestation of greed fueled by anti-consumerism. Maybe I'm exaggerating and I am, but that's how I view the Switch. As a consumer, I like the Wii U better, but perhaps a result of it is because I got it two years in its lifecycle, during a time in which its library was shaping up. Switch isn't terrible, but beyond sales and marketing, which is the only thing it excels at, there's very little to look forward to.

Just to add to this, Nintendo of Germany just added 6 new private videos to their Animal Crossing playlist. Things are looking up for an upcoming Animal Crossing announcement.

>Anyone else here is/was a Nintendo fan, but just depressed with the state (or rather, the direction) they're going in?

They're the least cucked of the three remaining hardware manufacturers at least. That's still not great but it's literally Nintendo or abandon consoles altogether and I hate pixelshit indie games so I can't.

I can't remember a time when a leak was right about anything Nintendo has done. Getting a leak from Gamestop implies that Gamestop has the information to begin with and they probably don't. Nintendo holds onto this shit and is very good at not letting any of it slip.

>>16083021

I don't know how to feel about this though. Hopefully it means something?

Nintendo are a nip company. That means a job for life if you toe the line. What idiot would risk that for the tiny buzz you'd get from leaking something?

Somewhat relevant. Is it worth getting a Wii today? I can get one from Ebay for about 50€ with all the controllers and such. Since piracy is so easy on them I'm just wondering why the hell not. I also want to play some Gamecube games. You can load GC games on a hacked Wii right?
