It's completely pointless to play any game, in fact life itself is pointless, we just assign meaning to things based on our primitive lowly view of the world, even though in the scale of the universe we're completely and utterly irrelevant like a speck of sand in a desert. Anyways, to anwer your question: it's not completely pointless but it is definitely highly recommended to know at least some basic Japanese.

It's not particularly difficult but you need to know the basics. If you can read some shoujo/shounen manga (albeit slowly), then you're probably ready for ぼくのなつやすみ.
