Seconded on Golf Story. I played through it. It really isn't that bad, but it's far from great. I wouldn't even call it good, to be honest. It would be better if the actual golf mechanics were worked on.
It's like a 4/10 all in all.
+ The graphics are really decent, and the character design is fine
+ The RPG mechanics have interesting potential
+ Some of the humor is alright
- The story sucks. It boils down to just doing what the game tells you to do in order, and your character doesn't even give a shit about what he's doing
- Aspects of the RPG mechanics really fucking suck. One of the stats is spin, so when it's underleveled, the ball curves left, and when overleveled, the ball curves right. Not only this, but you can downgrade all stats for their points back except for power, so if you're experimenting and don't know this yet (because the game never tells you) you can fuck up your save by making the ball curve hard left and dump all points into power so you can't undo it.
- The sound effects suck
- The rumble pumps to max for next to no reason. A character saying something forcefully makes it feel like you're holding a lawnmower
- Random mandatory side quests. Most of the game is spent on annoying fucking fetch quests.
- The humor is fucking awful.
- Tons of bugs and crashes. I had the game crash at least 3 times on me and had at least 3 other serious bugs that made me have to reset the game.
- The actual golf mechanics are mediocre at best. Wind has way too strong of an effect. A 3mph wind throws your ball off course by like a dozen meters. You can't actually view the entire course, just a limited view around yourself and where you can shoot. There is no course map. The ground slope can't be viewed as a whole, you can only see the slope at the point where you are aiming (this is the worst, because tons of courses have heavy slope, and it's common to drive a ball, have it roll out of reach where you couldn't check the slope, and have a heavy slope take it), and there is literally no visual distinction for slopes.
- No fucking multiplayer
- Very few interesting courses
I was excited for the game. I love golf games and RPGs, and this game was a big letdown. I don't regret playing it (I did finish it, after all), but I wouldn't play it again and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody else.
