not sure what you mean by "indie", but a polish studio came out with a game called WW3. it's very early access, but it's still fun, in it's very early build, with cod and battlefield going to shit, this could have a lot of promise, if the devs play their cards right
so far, it's a buggy mess, and the only modes are the usual conquest and tdm, with 4 maps for former and 2 for latter, but there is an autistic amount of detail to authenticity, if you like looking at your gun, and customizing every bit of it, the game is almost worth enough for that. it's a couple years old but Death Road to Canada is a pretty good survival roguelike game.
essentially you drive around in a car making decisions like whether to sleep in risky locations or drive off sleepless and leave your characters tired.
then there's segments of choosing locations to stop at (grocery stores/malls/police stations/umbrella stores) so you can find medical supplies/bullets/food/etc.
so it has random scenarios, decision making and mild management.
it's also got coop which works great with parsec if you want to play it online.

Strike Suit Zero is simply a complete unplayable trainwreck that appears to have been released in a pre-alpha state. Maybe there's a game there somewhere but I couldn't find it as it seems more like a tech demo or something.
Salt and Sanctuary you said it yourself. It's just not fun, mostly because the controls / fighting mechanics are utter shit. I actually enjoy soulslike but I think the formula should stay in 3d third person games as it just doesn't translate well to 2d.

I've actually implemented a functional clone of Doom in Game Maker. The way both games handle it is to treat the XY plane as a walkable dimension, and Z (height) actually has no bearing. That is, the XY coordinates on the texture are scaled based on the XY coordinates between you and the texture, that is, no actual Z/"depth" texture data is used. It truly is fake 3D

Spiritual successor to the Descent games by the original creators of Descent. It's really good, and even improves on Descent in a lot of ways. For the uninitiated, Descent was basically Doom in zero gravity and mind-bending secret-filled 3D labyrinthian levels to match filled with many enemies with different kinds of AI behaviors, where some enemies could aggressively rush you and others would lie in wait behind corners. Overload improves on some of the more bullshit aspects (there being no Thiefbots, Class 1 Drillers, Red Hulks, and infinite robot generators for one), and adds some things like a ram attack with your ship, shielded reactors, and destroyable robot generators. But the structure of each level almost always remains the same: save all the hostages, blow up the reactor, and head to the emergency exit before the level self-destructs.
The level design, controls, enemy variety, AI, lighting, music, basically everything (except boss fights) is really good. Even the story, which is told through magic audio logs you pick up as you go along, isn't too shabby. It's the best FPS of two decades bar none, and not because of a lack of competition either.

A shmup which only consists of orange and green colors, and being really good. The amount of bullets are too sparse and too fast for it to be called a bullet hell, as often a lot of stage hazards and unorthodox enemy formations are used. No two enemy formations are ever the same, and the game constantly pulls new tricks out of its sleeve. Every stage you get to choose between two new weapons, like side shot/back shot, charge shot (can block bullets and damage enemies on contact)/homing shot (can hit enemies in the background), and sword/drill, and you bet that enemies will be heavily testing you on those. The pacing is such that the game almost never gets boring, stages are kept brief enough to not overstay their welcome, and the scoring system allows you to get more tricky with maintaining chains inbetween waves.
The game is very forgiving with giving you extra lifes and scoring higher, but is also punishing enough to take them away in giant scoops. It makes progress feel more palpable, the better you get the more lives you will earn to progress further, and eventually you will make more progress on a single life. Then shit happens and the second loop comes along, where you restart the game with all your weapons and all the stages are heavily redesigned with even tougher enemies expecting you to use the full extent of your arsenal from stage 1. There's even remixed music on loop 2. The story is such that it's actually engaging and spoilers are actually needed here.

The Messenger was pretty good. Pirate it for a good time. I know a few anons didn't like it, and it seems extremely bland and simple at first, but the longer you go on the better it gets. Also, Rain World is incredible and the devs deserve all the praise in the world for that game, but so many people just don't know about it or complain of the difficulty.
The one caveat to Rain World is that you have a whole slew of different movement abilities, and you can do them ALL from the very start of the game…but the game doesn't tell you how to do any of them. Whatsoever. Which makes a gigantic difference. You can experiment trying to figure them out, but you'll probably die a lot. And once you finish the campaign, there's a much more difficult hardcore version…which is a completely different campaign and story.

To be fair about that screencap, there are different Tribes of scavengers. Some of them are immediately hostile to you and will just to stick you like a pig, but those are generally encountered in later areas. Savanger tribes will remember your actions for them for the whole game: if you "save" a scavenger (kill a lizard who's aggroed on one) it means a whole lot to them, the tribe will be amicable to you, and the scavenger itself will rush to your aid should you get attacked in its line of sight. The hostile tribes will chuck explosives at you and other things, but you can try placating them with pearls, or kill them all, which game journos would NOT have the skill to do.

I think they tweaked this in a later patch, the control screen explains hand switching and item dropping and things like that. The release version was a lot more minimalist.

Yes, I knew. That's the harder way to do it, you can also feed them, IIRC. In addition, there's a rare mechanic you won't see very often unless you play a lot: there's an evolution chain. Once in a while, whenever a creature is killed (non-sentient one) it has a chance of respawning as a "higher" version of its previous self. There are some enemies you can only see if you play on the highest difficulty and play for some time, and they are not anything you'd want to come face to face with. If you're lucky, you can manage to make one of those evolutions your pet.
>I think they tweaked this in a later patch
They did, the 1.5 patch if I remember. There was one move I was explicitly trying to do and couldn't (I had to look at the wiki for it when I saw someone talking about it), and then realized the version I had was old. They added a few things and gave some basic instructions, but they still didn't mention the majority of the movement abilities, and definitely none of the ones that are most helpful. Maybe the crouch jump, I can't remember.

My only issue with Overload were the final level purple alien ships. They just threw so many of them at you and their projectiles are the real problem. I was playing hardest difficulty, and it was just stupid. It was a constant bullet storm the entire time; the whole rest of the game, if you got hit, it was your own damn fault. In the alien levels, if you get hit, well, too bad, you're stuck in a tunnel and there's a nonstop rain of purple streaks firing down it that go faster than any other projectile, you just can't avoid them all.

CrossCode is pretty fun.
Looks/feels/plays/sounds like an SNES game on its original hardware. Its story is typical isekai-anime shit, but its gameplay is solid.
One thing that I wish I knew before going in though, is that there are puzzle dungeons. Not dungeons 'with' puzzles, but the entire dungeon consists of nothing but puzzles. Some people love that shit, others hate it. I'm in the camp that hates it because I like killing trash mobs and fighting huge fuckoff bosses. That said, the boss fights are pretty good, so that does make up for it. I give it a 7/10 despite the puzzle shit, but it's missing co-op play that would make it a solid 9/10 for me.
There's a demo of it on Steam or on the RadicalFish site if you're interested in checking it out. Or of course, can just torrent the whole thing and see how you like it. Either way, I think it's a pretty good game, even if the puzzles aren't my jam.

the story is not isekai. Isekai means person IRL trapped in MMO worled
in Crosscode the story starts with MC being a player who can't logout, but the MMO is still an MMO, not a real world.
The issue with CrossCode is that the puzzles overstay their welcome. There needs to be a healthy balance between enemies/enemyrooms/minibosses/gauntlets and puzzles. In CrossCode the dungeons are 80% puzzles 20% enemies, when it should be more like 70% enemies 30% puzzles.
The puzzles however are really well done and really enjoyable. They can be tiresome, that's all.
There's free content patch coming out this year with a new chapter, epilogue, boss rush, post-game bosses, that is lvl 70 content (10 more than what you need to beat it), and a second DLC for one more dungeon in the making. I always thought that Isekai was a general label, where the overall setting is a giant MMO, not necessarily the plot devices surrounding it.

That said, I absolutely agree. I really love CrossCode, both as a game and a concept, but the puzzles break the overall pace of the game itself, and makes it really fucking tedious. I audibly groan when I know I have to enter a dungeon because I know that I'll be doing puzzleshit for the next five hours, instead of fighting stuff. Which makes it worse because that's where the game really excels.

Isekai doesn't necessarily involve an mmo. It just means a person in a world that is not their own. They often involve game-like aspects or the world in question is basically a copy of an mmo setting but it's not required. For example, SAO is not an isekai but Kumo Desu Ka(game-like elements) and Mushoku Tensei(no game elements) are.

.hack wasn't really intended to be isekai. Sure, one of the characters can't log off the immersive MMO, but everyone else can. You don't so much as return to that position on that play through, you unlock something on one play through, die and go back to the location on the next one. That's literally what SAO was at first. I wouldn't call that isekai because the mmo world they're in exists within their own world. If they got transported to another actual world that replicates the mmo then it is isekai. You can't live out a life trapped in an mmo, your actual body will die. The key elements are probably the transportation of the person to another world and the actual existence of that world in relation to their original world.

I think trapped in a game is isekai, even trapped in a nightmare could be isekai if the dream is induced by some external force.
The imposition of the other world on the characters by some force that isn't known to exist until after the fact is what defines isekai.
The force keeping people in the game isn't known or known to be capable of that a priori.

Honestly not, at least for most of the characters, and even the player ones. R:1 era only has Tsukasa being trapped during the events of Sign, and then the six coma victims prior to the events of IMOQ, but unlike Tsukasa, they don't even get a world to explore, and basically just have their consciousness stuck in the void. R:2 has more claim, being that the Lost Ones effect seems more widespread (but again, they can't even explore), and then the AIDA server incident which traps a lot of people for what seems for a somewhat decent enough chunk of Vol.2, but has a time dilation effect of being mere minutes in the real world if memory serves, and only affects a comparatively small percentage of the playerbase, so no one believes them about the experience either. Yes, The World is a fucky MMO in any incarnation (chimaeraing the remains of the first to make the second was not smart), but an isekai it's really not. Watched it for the first time a year or two back, before starting IMOQ. Thought it was pretty good, but certainly not for everyone (which could be said of the games too, I guess), being an MMO related anime that actually understands how much time in those games is just character-to-character interaction and chatting, rather than action all the time. Fantastic OST regardless.

I viewed an extremely abridged gameplay segment, and the third image does no justice to the fucking insufferable attack on your sanity that are the monologue interruptions, you are not allowed to interact with critical elements in the game until Alex stops his bullshit, and it's shit that can last several minutes at a time over incredibly patronizing explanations of shit you already witnessed covered in layers upon layers of absolutely horrendous abuse of purple prose, it constantly rides that line between being serious and pretending to be retarded, irritating you to no end.
Minor segments of that shit had me exasperated, I have no idea how could anyone survive going through a full playthrough of that garbage without flying into a berserker rage.

Not really. I remember going to a movie once and there was a segment with a similar sort of joke. It was a while back, but one character gets into a conversation with the token black guy about what sort of music he likes. The black guy gets indignant and says something along the lines of "Oh, I bet because I'm black you assume I just love rap music. How do you know I don't like [insert other genres here]" The other character cucks and apologizes before the black guy starts laughing and saying he was just fucking with him and does like rap.
In retrospect, it was still pretty pozzed and the movie overall was shit, but it still worked far better than cuckdev's "joke." The timing was better of course and it didn't drag on with WORDS WORDS WORDS, but more than that it actually subverted your expectations through character action and dialogue rather than just going "stereotypes are bad [inject's soy]"

In particular, the game has a heavy emphasis on puzzles, parkour, and combat. Neither of the three elements ever overshadow oneanother from start to finish, and it makes for a satisfying experience. An average run doing just the main story is somewhere around 5-10hr while with all of the side content it's closer to 20-30. It's definitely worth the experience.
Also, contrary to what >>16009532 said, I really liked the puzzles. It's been a long time since a puzzle has made me feel fucking stupid without having a cheap and archaic gimmick attached to it.

But that's not good for a Ninja Gaiden clone though. Everything in the classic NG games died in one hit. It was all part of that game's "going fast" theme.
>Not really constant but sure.
The problem is that old games, such as what this one is trying mimic, typically never had unprompted dialogue during gameplay. Castlevania Spectral Interlude had the same issue. Old games would have an opening or ending text crawl, or between level cutscenes (like Ninja Gaiden did), or at most they would only have prompted text from interacting with NPCs. You generally wouldn't just walk into an in engine cutscene or walk and talk segment. Maybe sometimes with RPGs or adventure games, never with action games and platformers.
It's bad enough when new games do this but it just stands out like a sore thumb when modern clones or fan games do it.

Sure but why stop at complaining there? Why not complain about the garbage upgrade shop that serves nothing but make the game a cakewalk or why the essential upgrades(glidesuit upgrade, charged attack, being able to attack projectiles) weren't automatically built into the default moveset.
Game clearly gives up on being a homage to Gaiden and becomes its own thing, the problem is that its own thing is an objectively inferior game to Gaiden.

Grapple Force Rena is a really fun platformer although really short. Book of Demons is a really fun twist on the diablo format with a really unique art style. Brigador has the look of a hd old school top down rpg with real time top down mech twin stick shooting. Highly reccomended. Deadcore is a first person platformer with the with a really, really cool setting. Impulsion is a lot like Deadcore too. Minus a cool setting. Consortium The Tower is a super ambiotious indie Immersive sim with some surprisingly fun combat and decent voice acting. Bright Memory is Devil May Cry meets First person shooting. It's sadly only early access and a hour long but it's got a lot of damn potential. Made by one guy too. Kromaia is a really underrated cool space ship shooting game in 3d. Maximum Action is a case really similar to bright Memory where its a short game in early access with a lot of potential this time though it's a bit like a first person Max Payne it's decently buggy but man I haven't had this much fun with a shooter in a long time. Transistor's a beutiful isometric with a combat system that's so distinctive I can't really put it in any category. Music is great too.

So I couldn't care less about the views of public figures as long as the game is not affected and that is decided post-factum, after the game has already been released.

Wait, isn't Crosscode still kind of unfinished? I remember the first time I played it one of the quests(The broken gauntlet line) was still incomplete.
Also Neon Chrome is pretty good. Yes it's proc gen but it has some really good shit for a twin stick shooter like light based stealth, a serious hardon for destructible walls and environments, richochets and shit. It's pretty much the second best proc-gen twin stick shooter. My only problem with it was the riot shield was useless(because getting hit is undesirable 20% reduction from the front or not) and the environments got a bit stale.
Also it spawned JYDGE, pretty much neon chrome but not proc gen, but the levels were pretty hit and miss. I did really like the challenge conditions requiring you to try out and explore the loadout system though.
The first being Synthetik, fight me.
>>16034435
Not really what I meant. Compare the older MGS games to a lot of other stealth games or even TPP or GZ. Movement feels much more deliberate and more complex or quicker movements require some skill and changing your strategy on the fly feels very rewarding and tense. Sure it lacks a solid light/sound system but it makes up for it with great level design(as does every stealth game) and the added tension from the controls makes it stand out. Outside of Brigador I can't really think of a modern game where movement is slick and smooth, but still requires some getting used to before going wild with it and Brigador has it's own problems.

You can play to the conclusion of the story but there is indeed unfinished areas of the game. That quest line, sapphire ridge is pretty barren, the arena is closed. There is supposed to be an update coming that adds an epilogue/post game and the arena.

If you believe, that SJW faggots can't make good games consistently and evidence supports that, then that would mean that I would almost never actually be inclined to support such devs, so I don't know what's your problem. A huge amount of Doom's design is credited to Romero. Like the entire first episode was done by him. He was also one of the devs responsible for killing Tom Halls idea to make the game story driven. It's really hard to cleanly separate Romero from the design of Doom since he had his part in a lot of it. (He even helped make the level editor that he, Tom Hall and Sandy used). A better comparison to someone who is only listed in the credits is Tom Hall because the devs threw out most of his ideas and redid his levels to be more abstract and "video gamey". Since he made his levels to have a realistic space look and had things like tables and chairs as decoration. This is ironic looking back since now most Doom custom maps attempt to look realistic.
Romero is also the only reason why Id ever licensed its engines to other companies since Carmack was hugely opposed to the idea. (He didn't want to give tech support to some nobodies). Romero was responsible for Heretic, HeXen and Strifes existences. As well as Id later licensing the Quake 1-3 engines.
>>16034677
This had a lot to do with Romero's poor leadership with the project. Like they switched to the Quake 2 engine which was widely seen as a mistake since it delayed the game several years because they had to redo most of it. It's a really good example of an "idea guy" game because Romero had a ton of extremely ambitious ideas that would've been seen as the greatest game ever at the time but actually didn't play well in practice. Like

Afaik the main reason was because they wanted it so the player could select each individual weapon with the number bar. This was before swapping weapons with like a gun limit like Halo was a thing. They wanted the Ionblaster you get in level 1 to be bound to the same key in time period 4 for the glock you get during that era. The way they attempted this was by having different entity definitions for each time period. (Basically each time period is its own separate game as far as the engine is concerned) this was so badly implemented that if the game came out a few years later they probably would've just made it so you had like an 8 gun limit and could drop guns/swap between them instead. Then again most of Daikatana's poor design amounted to developers attempting to do things the easy way rather than the faster and more efficient way.

This is what should be called pozzcore. Admittedly, the animations are really cool. But that's about it. They always have simplistic player characters, then some wacky (boring) alien world with floating islands. There's no substance to those worlds, it's just too look cool, just there to be there. And they're always platformers, which is fine, but the art and world-settings tend to be pretty similar at a glance. That's really boring. Compared to back then, where you had Castlevania (gothic horror and vampires), and Super Mario Bros. (colorful world, like ours, but wacky), etc.. All I've seen from these indie platformers is the same shit. There's likely more to what my feelings are that I haven't quite articulated to myself yet.
