I recently replayed 2 and 3 this year, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed them. Also forgot how many plot points I mixed up between the games, I would have sworn that Mamoru and the N1 Grand Prix happened in 2. Maybe I'm just thinking of NT Warrior.
Did anyone play the new Operate Shooting Star translation this year? I only played the first Star Force and it didn't really inspire me to continue that series.

I'd tepidly recommend skipping the first game and starting with 2. This is the kind of thing that's only going to make sense retrospectively but MMBN1 is missing so many crucial features of the later games it's not going to make a good first impression. With the Net the way it is in 1 it's practically like half the game is missing.
>what should I be prepared for?
It's like a game adaptation of a monster-of-the-week anime that was made to sell toys, except the game was made first and the anime came second. The combat system is totally solid and each game has a number of original ideas that I'm surprised haven't been stolen and used in other games.

BN6 is largely regarded as the most "balanced" for multiplayer, and that's further backed because apparently the BN subreddit had a Tourney, and curated a banlist and ruleset.

Blue is definitely for 3.
5 is definitely the DS version.
4, It doesn't really matter, both are repetitive fetch quests in a Bracket Tourney format, and instead of having an amazing aftergame like 3, it instead opts to make you do New Game+ twice to actually complete everything.
6, most people like playing as demon-doggo over bitch-bird.
Star Force 1, you're a faggot if you choose Pegasus.
Star Force 2, doesn't matter, the game had those command card input things that briefly existed for the DS, so you can unlock all the abilities in
Star force 3, Black Ace is definitely better.

It's a temporary fusion ability that works exactly like OG Megaman works. Your appearance becomes a cross of the other Navi and Megaman.exe, and changes your default weapon.
It also generally gives an elemental boost to chips of the same type. Basically Pokemon STAB or hidden Talents that boost abilities in certain environmental conditions, and various elemental weaknesses, resistances, and immunities.
These Elements by themselves are nothing new, but the thing is BN is unique in that it's an Deck-Building Grid-based Roguelike Game. You build a deck of 40 cards that represent unique abilities you use in combat. Each ability can only be used once, though Folderback recycled your entire deck if you had it. DoubleSoul/StyleChanges/Crosses king of set the stage for deck-focus. In 3 Electric attacks do double damage on IcePanels, so a common strat was to use Aqua style so you wouldn't slip on Ice, use IceStage to freeze the battlefield, then load up on your most powerful electric chips.
It was interesting because it had the strategy of a Deck-building game, yet required the reflexes of a Bullet-Hell Roguelike. Then there were other mechanics that you could build off of, terrain, Rock-Paper-Elements advantage, Full-Synchro, which rewarded you for interrupting an enemy's attack with your own by doubling your next attack, which you could keep chaining interrupts to keep it going.
Essentially it had the Meta-strategy of a TCG, but still required Player Skill as a Rogue-like, and it led to a fairly complex and interesting PvP experience that has never been replicated since.

The cpus in the gb/gbc and gameboy advance isn't as hard to dissassemble for as you think. It's just next level tedious. Best places to start are launch titles with small rom images (by virtue of giving you a smaller haystack, so to speak), or titles with numerous variants with known differences… however don't be fooled into thinking it would be a simple 1:1 comparison. Another thing that helps is that I'm pretty sure a good chunk of gba games used the built in decompressors in the bios, whereas in n64 land is the wild west.
Been meaning to take apart the exe games myself, maybe someday.

Here's an RPG Maker XP fangame, it says that it's in beta but it still has a sizeable amount of content. Instead of making a deck you select a netnavi to play as and they have their own moveset based on what they did in the game, so it's closer to a fighting game in that respect. Pretty neat if you've ever wanted to play as one of the enemy navis. Development is discontinued due to bullshit though.

Think with a single 720p widescreen we could go back to a side view? Total waste of time if you ask me, considering how much it detracted from the combat. I'm surprised Battle Network/Star Force never received a 3DS entry which rendered the game stereoscopically, it feels like a perfect fit for the perspective on the battle arena and it would be a good way to show the depth between the different tiers on the Net.

I thought about proper team battles where you have two navis that share the same field together. Example is Mega Man and Roll fight on the same team together. They both use different Battle Chips depending on what's in Lan's and Mayl's folders. For a team ability Roll can merge her's and Mega Man's current HP into one value for a turn before splitting HP equally. A risky maneuver that can save your team mate in a pinch. Roll's normal attacks are melee tentacle wires that steal HP. Roll could intrude into the enemy grid briefly and attack them at risk of her getting hit point blank. Roll would have damage reduction at point blank but she can't heal until she returns to grid.
Also thought about playing other characters and their Navis as well. Plus we have to have a lewd Splash Woman net navi right?

I'd much prefer a game that focuses much more on detailing megaman with things like NaviCust, then adding layers of mechanics(Beast, Beast Cross, Cross) through other netnavis to really add depth to the game. I feel that most of the focus should be on Megaman, and felt that 6 handled that better than 5 did.

Also Double Souls, Fucking Double souls. This did "Fuse with your ally for more power" better than any other show I watched at the time. Better than Nuura, better than Transformers, Better than DBZ. I liked this aesthetic and execution better than anything else, and still do. Still kind of mad that by Star Force 3 all we got was not Doublesouls, but BN3 Style changes disguised as such, and the equivalent of BN2 Hub Style in SF 2.

Okay. I'm trying to think of ways to advance the plot without going too soylent or dystopian with gameplay innovations to boot. I really want to have an underground alliance with Lan and Dr. Wily. Also would love to see a change to a Jr. High or High School setting with new friends/rivals with new Navis.
People would hate a shift to 3D graphics. It could benefit the game's overworld with a vertical axis to explore. Also what if Net Battles are now on a 3D grid instead of 2D?

SF1's crosses were so primitive that only BN1 armors had fewer effects, but both SF2 and SF3 had extra forms with very noticeable bonuses. Though I actually wonder what is supposed to be such a radical difference between styles and BN6 crosses, since the one thing that sets them apart (aside from stupid limiting gimmicks, which SF also has) is that crosses can have elemental attack bonuses in addition to some useful effects they grant.

That's pretty much all anyone expected when they first heard of Star Force, though now on a Switch, the graphics would have much more polish and smooth.
In all likelihood, we'd just get a new franchise all together. New Megaman, New Wily. Perhaps in a College/Early Adult oriented story, keeping in mind that BN's Fan-base has aged along with it, but definitely still aimed at all audiences, or just T-rated.
Seeing how Star Force 3 ended, I think the best option would probably be an interstellar setting, warping from planet to planet, and a much larger game to explore. Plus a larger number of Souls/styles, and more multiplayer minded chip design.
>>15999174
Crosses were more thematic. Those elemental attacks and and effects encouraged you to design around a Cross. If you play MTG, it's the difference between playing standard 40 card game, and playing Commander. I liked the specificity that crosses set up, and established various counters and combinations. By comparison, styles just gave you an Elemental Weakness and a Buster change, and a naviCust progression that you could eventually grow out off, essentially making the only reason you would keep a Style Change for the Buster Weapon and elemental bonuses, Which allowed for an insane amount of cheese. In 3 I would always get the Guard Style ASAP, because you maxxed it out and got Reflect, arguably the most powerful Navicust program because it let you use Counters at no cost to your chip library. Same with the one that let you ignore stage elements, so you could use Elec+Ice cheese without having to be Aqua style.
By comparison, Crosses forced you to design around them through their limitations and bonuses you only got while having them, leading to a much more interesting meta-game.

Why not both? Since man has yet to survive FTL transportation methods they use FTL for deep space communication via proxy droids. The droids themselves have no practical weapons of their own because they instead wage combat through cyber warfare, which is based off of net battling from 20XX.
This is 30XX now. So net battlers have evolved into mecha-style giant robots with more attack, defense, and maneuverability who are controlled via proxies, A.I co-pilots of the avatar that they synchronize with VR. While for the most part cyber war games have been a pass time between planetary nation since no real property is damaged there has been a rogue drone going around hacking into other units and stealing them from their users. This drone is known as Sigma and currently has no known living human controlling it's proxy. Sigma uses a virus to force proxies to go maverick and betray their pilots.
You are partnered with Project X, a living proxy pilot with an immune system and sentient A.I. system that is immune to the virus. While you started your career battling for fun and losing a lot you have been asked with a job to help investigate the rogue proxy and help take it down for the benefit of proxies and pilots everywhere.
As long as plot doesn't go too retarded and we get plenty of pantsu shots by best girl this should get interesting.

Battle Network
1: DS + Operate Shooting Star (QoL)
3: US versions. (JP is an unfinished mess)
5: DS + undub (has VA, better translation. censors the last supper portrait still)
6: JP version + translation port (Battle Chip, e-reader, boktai + other cut content)
WiiU Virtual Console added some button combinations to unlock stuff, but it's funnily ineffective.
Star Force
1: JP version (Wavescanner, Boktai + cut content), a mod to restore some of it is taking forever. Someone needs to fix the font too, it's proportional internally. EU makes font somehow worse.
2: JP version or US version (EU version cut a gameplay mechanic)
3: JP version (US version broke a gameplay mechanic)
Both series are nightmares for completionists. Most games have no definitive version with everything working out of the box AND no important content cuts.

Yes and no. Each game is standalone, but BN1-6 take place sequentially, and some characters are recurring, though no prior knowledge is required.
As for improvement, yeah they do. 6 is generally regarded as the best, mechanically at least, while 3 is the most fun, but also the most unbalanced in terms of multiplayer gameplay. 4 is considered the worst, 2 is ok, and 5 is the most controversial on whether it was good or not, though most people don't hate it as much as 4.
Overall, the story is so-so standard fare for a JRPG aimed at kids. It's interesting enough, and the quests and side-quests are interesting enough to keep you invested, but the main attraction is the addictiveness that the perfect blend of Action and Deck-building Strategy the gameplay had. Like what Kingdom Hearts for GBA tried to be.

Be sure to play the others. I say 6 is the best mechanically, but that's just as far as them refining the formula and balance for multiplayer, as well.
3 definitely was the best iteration as far as just sheer amount of enjoyable gameplay, and had the longest post-game story of any of them. The game is full of cheese in multiplayer, but holds up just fine as a single-player.
5 is also not to be overlooked, the reason it was considered controversial is because of Liberation Missions, which you either love or hate. They function similar to SMT: Devil Survivor's battles and gameplay, where you have a limited number of turns in combat to eliminate an enemy, which appear on a map, as well as an area boss. It's also the best way to experience Dark Chips(Edgy versions of normal chips that do way more damage, but if you use them even once, they reduce your max HP by 1, DoubleSoul circumvented this problem, and made that chip your megabuster)

So at this point wait for a new
Action/TCG RPG in a new series or make your own. The only way to go from here in that timeline is to go lightspeed and exploring the planets of the solar system. I don't think humans can survive light speed at least not without a benefecial mutation caused by Z-wave exposure by the AMians and FMians that allows humans to transform their bodies into energy waves at will. Could be a ZX era akin to biometal.
That said I think the next natural step for the grid system would be to make it a 3D-grid. This means there's vertical movement as well as horizontal movement. The system would have to be reworked as to not rely so much with screen nukes late game as you need more precision. Your buster will still hit whatever is flying as with most guns. Swords and AoE attacks will hit in on an X, Y, or A plane. X, Y, and Z are colored as Red, Green, and Blue respectively. Vertical movement is jumping unless you have a temporary hover or flying ability active. Jumping also leaves you hanging in the air for a bit but you can still move laterally before falling. Or if you're fighting in space you use zL/L2 and zR/R2 to raise and lower your altitude. The other trigger button is targeting but you can still move on a 4(column)x3(lane)x3(altitude) grid on your side. Since this has a deep space theme I wouldn't mind a cross between mecha and Mega Man, at least for power-ups.
Also because the characters can become lightwaves you're no longer bound to the net or EM wave roads. This means exploring areas aren't going to be narrow paths and instead will be open rooms like traditional RPGs. You can avoid or hunt encounters as they pop in on the map and chase you. You can even go on rogue-lite expeditions with procedural generated areas if you want to. The game will most likely be 100% cell shaded 3D. But I think that 3D might be necessary for gameplay reasons here inside and outside combat.

Dark chips themselves were a mistake, and 5 not only invalidated their entire concept, since there they work exactly like evil mega/giga chips do in both 4 and 5, complete with scrambled letter codes so that you can't even use more than 1 per turn, chaos unisons also made light Megaman better at using the gimmick that is supposed to be exclusive to the dark one with no downsides whatsoever (dark Megaman still permanently loses HP when using them, since who can be bothered to fix that). One of the dark chips in BN5 puts Megaman in the berserk state that is supposed to trigger when dark Megaman hits 0 HP, so even that feature is taken away from the dark soul and made stronger with now tradeback of any kind.
So the only thing that dark soul has left is Static, a standard chip that light Megaman inexplicably still can't use even after everything else had been taken away. And, ironically, that's still enough for a dark folder to be stronger than most anything else in the game, since they went out of their way to make sure that the rest of the chips and PAs deal as little damage as possible, cause invincibility on hit, and can't be combined with anything else in the game even if you have 4 copies of every chip. But Tornado was one of the very few chips that got improved in 5, which inadvertently made Static even more powerful thanks to its AoE. I can only assume that it escaped the no-fun-allowed "balancing" that everything else had to go through because they didn't care about anything related to dark chips other than the chaos unison gimmick.
It's disingenuous to pretend that liberation missions are the only reason why it isn't liked. What about its "balance" choices? BN5 limited PAs to 1 per battle. It continued BN4's sabotage of the chip library - still three codes per chip despite smaller library, but now they are intentionally designed to have no synergy with anything else in the game, so a chip that has 3 versions is almost guaranteed to come in 9 different codes. Some chips were nerfed just to make liberation missions harder, since a single player minigame takes priority over multiplayer. You still only ever fight level 1 viruses throughout the entirety of the game's story, just like in 4. And once you unlock higher level viruses, there is nothing left - you are required to grind those viruses for their chips in all the same locations that you've already been to, but now there isn't even any story to it, not even a repeat of it like in the previous game.
The only reason anyone would defend BN5 is because it was the first, sometimes the only BN game for those who never had a GBA. So unlike BN1 and BN4, people actually played it to see that it's not as bad as the urban legends claim.

I've been thinking how to incorperate an analog stick into BN/SF gameplay. I know on 3DS more than likely you would use the D-pad for battle because the nub is not for precision flicks. Tr4sh had to invent B+A Smash for 3DS. But now we have full analog sticks with clickies on the controller how can we use them? I still want to keep grid based combat. And while the game can technically be compatible with single Joycon even with 3D movement by replacing L+R with clickie or bumper/trigger for customize (sL and sR still raise and lower you on the grid) how can eight directional lateral movement work with stick? Otherwise a D-pad would be necessary.
3f4713 No.16035017
>>16034587
I mean, diagonal movement would be the obvious answer.
Actually, if we're in 3d, there'd be no reason to limit the grid to facing just one or two directions.
>player area is a 5 X 5 Grid
>Enemy area is four 3 X 5 grid areas that face the Player's area in 4 Cardinal directions, essentially making the battlefield a "+" shape.
>Left Joystick allows you to move diagonally
>Right Joystick rotates the camera. Camera position is still orthogonal side-view from BN series, but your model and perspective rotates to view the direction you input towards.
Gameplay would work like certain Liberation Mission battles in 5 where you're fighting a battle from all sides, rotating your direction to target enemies.
Multiplayer and boss battles would probably function the same as standard BN, but on a 5 X 5 Grid, unless you sort out balance issues of being inside/outside the player space and enemy space.

Keep in mind grids are 3D now. Which means the grid is 5x5x3 grids. zL and zR will control your altitude (vertical movement) while L activates custom gague, selects battle chips/cards. Dimensions are lane, colum, and altitude respectively. You can step into enemy territory Star Force style targeting with R but only with certain chips. This also leaves you vulnerable if you don't get off a counter hit as you are automatically repelled one block at a time out of enemy space. Unless you have a card effect active you cannot change your trajectory (straight back). Meaning the further the enemy is on the grid then the higher risk you take opening yourself up for a counter. You can also "resist" push back by activating a battle card in enemy space at the expense of 10 HP if you know an enemy is going to activate an attack that will hit you when you're back in your space. The same rules that apply to you also apply to enemies that steal your space to attack as well. Dash cards that put you behind your own grid after activating won't be eligible for space stealing. It's for cards like swords, fists, and hammer.
There will also be two styles of battle: gravity battle and zero-g. Zero-G you have full control over altitude unless gravity from a battle card is in effect. Gravity forces you to the ground with maybe a few mid-air platforms to jump on. zL and zR will be used to "jump" instead of ascend/descend. Some mid-air platforms can protect you from attacks below and above. Some can be shot down. Some can be created temporarily via battle cards. It depends on the stage layout.
For competition there will be multiple types of arenas depending on the league and rules fit in game tourneys and templates for Vs. matches. There are also 0G (zero gravity), 1G (gravity but with jumping), and 3G (no jump allowed) rules. And custom card/style banlists can be made with each of these rules for your personal league as well.

It's not the best it could have been, but it demonstrates the main problem with Tsunderes is that they're too poorly written as a whole, and usually just slapped onto a girl for the sake of giving someone their jollies, or because of simple lazy writing.

Viruses are shown to be mostly passive towards system architecture, usually only targeting sentient or "living" software most of the time. It's really only when directed by humans/navis or for particularly aggressive groups, like the mettaur you see for the tutorial fight.
Not only that, when your Smart-Home is able to manage everything, when your toilet is capable of automatically dispensing the exact right amount of water to flush based on all the info it gets from your water main, your other plumbing units, and the temperature both in and out of the house, AND you almost never need to pay for a plumber, an electrician, or other repairman because the computer is able to manage the usage of every resource so conservatively and extend the life of everything at no inconvenience to yourself, you'd be saving more money than you'd be losing to mishaps, inconvenience, or paying someone else to bust for you.
Not to mention Virus-busting is considered part of basic school curriculum which shows that things have been this way for so long that it's considered an essential skil, and Lan and Megaman are, mind you, 11 years old. Sure, they're prodigal netbattlers, but that qualified them to resolve the actual life-threatening events. Gutsman, Roll, and Glide seemed to have no trouble busting your average virus.

Well… That's actually fairly doable if you do a bit of coding. The core of it is the Mycroft Digital Assistant, which is basically Open-Source GoogleVoice/Alexa. From there, it’s a matter of customizing Mycroft so it can do most of what you want, and then doing something funky with Mic-inputs in Windows. If you set up the audio-output of Mycroft to simultaneously play, and be sent to a microphone input via soundboard input, then set Facerig or similar to only listen to that input, you’d be able to set up a secondary mic input to connect to Mycroft, which you’d use to speak with it. There you go, loli that controls your computer. Combine it all with an open source chatbot, and maybe you’d have something interesting.
