maybe Dominions 5 would suit you?
it takes a lot from Master of Magic and a bit from HoMM 3, so it may be more 4x than grand strategy or wargame, but the scope is pretty impressive, tons of factions, units, spells and summons you can do in and out of battle, you can even craft magic items to empower your commanders
its mostly focused on multiplayer tho, thats a bit of a boner killer for me but I may bite the bullet one of these days and play against people

I played Total Warhammer around release, was awful at it, and only gave it another try again recently. The problem I keep running into is that I have trouble controlling such a large number of guys and that the campaign is shit for teaching you since there's no real balance and it boils down to which side has better numbers. Also the battles take so fucking long to load that it makes auto-resolve really damn tempting for most fights.

There's Graviteam Tactics: Operation Star that I have played a bit.
Game is really rough, but there's the map phase where you move whole division, then the battle phase where you move squad around.
You can setup how realistic/arcadey you want, but on the more realistic level you also need to take in account the communication line:
You relay order to the squad leader, and the leader then order the soldier under them around, so if you give "too many orders", the squad will be confused, or if they had some shell exploding near them their hearing will be impaired to the ear ringing. Stuff like that.

War in the East is fun but pretty intimidating. WitW is a little more intuitive but I don't personally like the setting as much. They're really hard to get a grip on and you'll be continuously learning as you play, but the smaller scenarios are actually a lot of fun even without a serious understanding of the more complex parts of the game. Once you have the basics you can pretty much just drop into scenarios and have fun.

The Slavs have a bunch of John Tiller games along with other Wargames up on Rutracker, Search " Компьютерные варгеймы / Wargaming " to get the new thread. I'd personally recommend The French and Indian war or the Mexican-American war titles if you're interested in Tiller games, the UI and many of the mechanics are shared throughout nearly all of the games they've made, even through the WW2 games. The reason I'd recommend those to start off with is because the battles are generally small so it's easier to digest. Though I suppose you could go right for the Panzer Campaign series and play some of the smaller scenarios instead of the huge ass Blitzkrieg in the west you have pictured.

>Battle south of Kharkov after its first liberation in February 1943. The Soviet 6th gds Cavalry corps and tanks of 201 TBde conduct mobile operations behind the enemy lines.
>On the morning of February 20, the 11 CD 6 gds CC received the order to attack Ordivka and Bulakhi farmsteads, but did not accomplish the task, and by evening withdrew to fst.Klyuchevodsk where it was on the defensive until February 20-21. And 83 CD conducted battle for vlg.Borki for two days, positioned on the heights north of the village. But by the evening of February 20 was dislodged from the heights to the north, and entrenched in the forest. The next day, the cavalrymen attacked Borki again, but were able to capture it only by the morning of February 22. The same day, 11 CD reached fst.Podkopay and fst.Homenki again, and attacked in the direction of fst.Ordivka and fst.Bulakhi. Units of the SS LSAH division took defense here.

Play on The easiest difficulty and just fuck around playing around with The mechanics like you would with a toy. Eventually you will learn some of The mechanics and units, starting to recognize them and get ideas about how to use them. Then start playing on higher difficulties, moving slowly up, that is how you learn strategy games.

The current thread is a continuation of an old one about the Panzer campaign games that hit 92 or 93 pages and had random links just dropped all over the place. The current thread has everything that works from the last one, not counting the original torrent link to some Panzer campaign games.

Dominions is temporary fun for only the newest players outside of MP. Inside of MP, it's a fathoms-deep well of meta. The nations that look strong are either shit or strong for a completely different reason (e.g. Niefelheim's main strength isn't having the most formidable sacred giants in the game or the even more formidable frost giant Jarls thugged out with magical equipment, and you will lose against most competent players with decent or better nations if you rely on those tactics; their real strength is in making magical communions headed by your old frost giant Baba Yaga-lookin crones set to feed off of your Skratti in werewolf form with stacked regen items, which will infinitely spam hordes of skeletons while your giant, turbo-regening werewolves heal through the massive fatigue damage they incur; a small handful of Skratti are infinite spell batteries for a dozen Gygja).
Most of the cool-looking stuff is garbage (Hinnom, which is all about your half-Jew giant, half-fallen angel unholy cannibal kings actually sucks ass if you rely much on those, as they quickly kill off your population with their feasting), most direct damage spells (see: the cool spells) are shit, development and balancing is glacial. You'll need to straight-up study the game, the inspector and tutor under the tranny-run community if you want to git gud at this incredibly niche game for autismos. Then the actual games themselves are a constant responsibility that run for months.
It's not fucking worth it imo.

Yeah it is, but you don't have control over battles, they happen automatically
but it's fairly similar in terms of scale and how it plays. You move around the map and grab resource locations and fight/recruit monsters
it's much more small scale than dominions is, but it's pretty fun if you're don't want to slog through a longer play session of dominions and it does have some cool features like going to hell or the netherworld, plus the variety of "end games" that different factions can do like breaking the 7 Seals

This is a big part of the issue. Dominions is great, but the more you enjoy it the more you realise that almost all the units nations, spells. rituals, and weapons in the game are trash useless, and the more you try to explore the magic in the game, the less fun you have. The real fun that people have in dominions is the machiavellian plots.
