Where will an anon find a game with an active RP community?

>not ERP

>preferably not too casual

>not an RPG with immersive elements, but not without this

I want the real thing. I used to roleplay on MMOs and I'm in the dumps looking for another place to try again. I miss it so much. I miss the autism. I miss the sense of community. I miss the characters. I miss getting into character and pretending like I was in the game.

Alternatively to the anon’s post above, an actual video game that gives you the same shit as /tg/ without needing to spend a shit ton on different board games or dnd shit is Tabletop Simulator. If you just want the dnd role play experience you can try roll20 or something similar. You’d just need friends, of course.

Thank you, anon.

I do the erratic and sometimes RP in non-RPG games for fun. It is easy to do. These days I want to engage RP communities in a virtual world. These are the things I am looking for. I definitely want one without a subscription to pay or even free.

283485  No.15968291

You might enjoy VRChat. Granted it has no gameplay, but its hard to find RP in a game with gameplay besides MMOs. The key aspect of "a game you can roleplay in' is character customization, but its not required. I remember there being some sandboxish war game where people roleplayed as a squad but I can't remember what it was.

Unfortunately, my computer is too shit for that game. I checked the specs and my piece of shit computer can't run it. I have Intel HD Graphics 520 and pretty much can only play Skyrim on low settings, current retail WoW runs at like 20-30 FPS, and I usually can't play many newer games, unless they're low graphics. This kills.

>>15968291

VRChat looks like a game with voice chat. I could enjoy it. It's just I also to type rather than talk.

If you're autistic, you could try Space Station 13. There are servers for it still running over on 4chan's vg. I think tg has a server too, as well as some others like goonstation, but I don't know their statuses. I spent most of my time playing as a MoMMI robot fixing the ship and skittering and beeping away from other crew members.

I've never tried tabletop games or anything like dnd. When I first started roleplaying, I was infatuated with screaming into the mic and roleplaying in non-RP games and having friends larp as opposing civilizations. I was always the villain and liked to be a barbaric civilization with slave labor. Then I moved on with text-based MMO RP and fantasy characters in a virtual world and this was immersive. I found plenty of people in-character and going around. I miss both of these experiences.

in traditional roleplaying this is cancer and it is called "my guy syndrome." in online games it is accepted because the faggot in question is friends with one of the server admins. you will always have a better experience roleplaying around a table

Well, how do you roleplay? You suddenly jump into character and pretend you're in the game. It can be done with any game you play, really. I've roleplayed in FPS for the first time I ever roleplayed because it's something I always wanted to do, but I never knew what roleplaying was. You see, anon, I always liked playing pretend as a kid and I brought it into gaming.

>How do you RP in a strategy game?

You usually roleplay as the nation or military. It's easy. It takes RP to a diplomatic angle where now you aren't only roleplaying as a person, but as a whole nation.

It's not hard to do. I've done it before and met people who RP on strategy games. Geopolitical simulators are particularly fun. It can be done on Hearts of Iron, Sid Meier's Civilization, Superpower 2, Stellaris, and Warcraft 3 custom games.

>>15968502

RP is limitless in potential. I've done strategy games with RP as long as it's easy to chat and gameplay isn't too fast-paced, it can be done. It's usually roleplaying as the country and giving off actions that countries do, like making peace deals, world leader talk, war, and so on.

eb2cd8  No.15968526

Heck, I even roleplayed in Minecraft. Is Minecraft a game where people traditionally go to roleplay? No, but Minecraft is still fun to RP in.

626d80  No.15968550

>>15968502

It's surprisingly easy to do in Dominions due to the very thematic nature of the nations and the way the message system works. The only way to communicate between nations (players) in game is to send a message, which arrives on the target player's feed at the beginning of the next turn. It also helps that "you" are actually a pretender God with a name and body type that you choose. Usually people embellish these messages, giving themselves titles and such, writing the way they think their pretender or his subordinates would write. R'lyeh players might write some creepy, cryptic shit, while Man players might write like King Arthur and Marignon players might pretend they're the Spanish Inquisition.

What do you guys even RP as? I don't choose characters from any media even if I like them. Instead I brainstorm custom ones based on that character but try to differentiate as much as I can. The best ones I think are the those that are only good at one thing, are very simple and limited and often times suffer from severe shit. Like making a piglegged fencer, or a wizard with concussion.

Pretty much any MMO is good for RP. Since MMOs are boring as shit and RP is the only thing that makes them enjoyable.

>balmung

Balmung will be irrelevant once 4.55 hits, since crossworlding will be a thing. Mateus is the current shit where RP is concerned because Balmung is stagnant. Unless you enjoy RP with the same twelve people that never log out.

>second life

Second Life used to be good, but good luck finding a place that isn't a fucking ghost town now. Even things like Midian City are dead, the Criers, Dier and even The Forest are mostly filled with idlers who refuse to RP in anything but IM. And even then, everyone seems to be a barely-functioning illiterate. Shit sucks, man.

Then WoW you will just want to avoid entirely, unless you want to encounter faggots like pic related. Finding decent RP seems pretty slim, unless you want to find an active (((Discord))) RP community for the game you're interested in RP in.

RP is in an unfun place right now and I hate it.

Thirding Space Station 13, it's got as good a mix of gameplay functionality and roleplay as you could reasonably ask for. Don't know about any other servers, but years back cuckchan /tg/ server was the light roleplay one while /vg/ was the powergaming munchkin one but those tables have turned. Also /vg/'s code is insanely good, shit runs silky smooth, characters aren't on an air hockey rink, and there's some new mechanics like the more in depth medical system and hull breaches and opening doors to space being more deadly

There used to be an RP community on Neverwinter Nights 1, but that went away with Gamespy shutting down.

I would say WoW, but the quality isn't exactly high and the game itself doesn't lend itself to roleplaying very well.

Part of me thinks this is deliberate. They're trying to trim all of the RPG elements out of RPGs at the moment, since they view things like mechanics as gatekeeping. This is impacting tabletop, too.

>NWN1

Finding decent RP on NWN1 was always a crapshoot. Because you would always get faggots from the GOR servers trying to force regular games into bending to their godmoding shit. It was obnoxious and awful. And since NWN1 always had a pretty small/niche RP community, it always seemed to be the revolving door of the same 40 people, 30 of which were those BDSM assfucks from Nightblood.

>I would say WoW, but the quality isn't exactly high and the game itself doesn't lend itself to roleplaying very well.

I'd say that's half true. The quality is bad, and it only became worse once SWG, EQ2 and CoX died and everything consolidated into WoW.

I'd say that the game lends itself to roleplaying well, but not as well as others due to the lack of controllable spaces like housing/personal instancing/campaign creation like in the other games mentioned.

>since they view things like mechanics as gatekeeping. This is impacting tabletop, too.

Rollplayer faggots have existed since the beginning of time, and try to force numbers over imagination every time. Fuck those faggots too.

>force numbers over imagination

What's wrong with this? I'd rather use numbers to determine if something succeeds over the player's decision as you'll end up with everyone godmodding which is boring as fuck.

Even if you played with people who were willing to lose occasionally it's not as fun for someone to choose to fail some action than to want to succeed, but fail due to the roll and then trying to figure out how to handle the situation.

Not true, it was going on all the time, you just had to directly connect to servers. Check out nwnlist.com. Now it all went to hell because beamdog kikes took over and everyone puts up with it because they make vague promises. It's a reference to what the player says when they justify their shitty roleplaying you dumb faggot. If you had input the phrase "my guy syndrome" into any search engine you'd have understood what I was talking about. The idea is that a player allows their limited knowledge or perspective on what their character does to completely drive their decision making, precluding any attempt at actually having fun. Entire groups can suffer this phenomenon, to the point where everyone agrees not to have fun because "that's what their guy would do."

EE did absolutely nothing to the original campaign, all it did AFAIK was adding some shit to the map editor, so it's basically a full-priced DIY game. Sadly almost all established servers have switched to it because of working server list and whatever else they promised.

If you want SP, download or buy an old CD of diamond edition. Many custom modules don't work on EE despite all these promises (like ADWR). If you want to play MP you're forced to buy the Engorged Edition.

6df488  No.15972736

>>15972281

They lied about almost everything. None of the bugs that actually matter, like weird movement shit and camera shit, were fixed. Many modules were broken despite promises that they wouldn't be. They didn't bother to implement proper UI scaling for higher resolutions, it's glitchy as fuck and the "slider" only allows you to choose 1x or 2x with nothing inbetween. So you either get tiny as fuck or way too huge at 1080p. As far as I can tell none of the promised expanded modding potential was delivered, or at least no one has utilized it yet. It's a pathetic excuse for an "enhanced" edition and a blatant cash grab on a fucking 16 year old game.
