there was a SCOTUS ruling some months back that states can require sales tax (owed to the state of the resident of the consumer) for online purchases, even if the retailer has no brick-and-mortar real estate within the borders of the state. some larger companies, such as Amazon (and maybe Valve, now?) are charging the sales tax at time of purchase now. if it isn't charged then, and the state requires it, then it is probably technically still owed to the state, although who tf knows if that's ever going be actively enforced
