Every game I've played in the past 12 years has been pirated.

If I really really liked it I went back and paid for an official version or donated a few dollars to the creators.

With the death of rentals it's pirate and try or you're a fucking fool and a tool.

Everything except the rare multiplayer online game I want to play. All of that money goes towards more hardware, like the hacked Switch full of games that you should have but apparently don't.

When I actually bought video games, all I felt was that I was getting poorer and spending my hard earned money on disposable, superfluous entertainment. To be perfectly honest, I've recently somewhat-thought about pirating a vidya but not really gotten around to doing it. In fact not long ago I think I tried to do the old torrenting thing just to check if I still remembered, and it didn't turn out right. If I wanted to pirate something it would probably be some expensive Unity addon like shaderforge, but then again the pirate version would probably be buggy/broken/malware so the paid version would be vastly superior anyway.

I've pirated many things before but later bought most of the ones I didn't just trash and forget about. The bought versions were always better, if the pirate version isn't outright useless then it's probably an ancient beta test copy that looks nothing like the up to date version. Last year or the one before I probably flipped through a bunch of torrent sites but didn't find anything I cared about so I just moved on.

I don't own any consoles after the sixth gen. It's fucking stupid to pay for games that aren't in production anymore, which every PS1/gamecube/xbox/DC game isn't.

The developers got their money from the publisher already. They don't live without food for all those years working on a game and then have to wait for money after it releases. It is also case by case basis how much they ACTUALLY earn from each game sale. They could make barely anything, they could make tons. It all depends. You can't just assume developers make 90% of the cash from a video game sale. It's likely a fucking low ass number that you can't imagine. Electronics in general have super slim margins and the retailer is the real winner in the end. I can't imagine software sales does any better than the slim margins people like sony, microsoft, nintendo, nvidia, amd, and intel operate under.

If it supports the creators or a service I like, I buy. If it's a long dead IP or a console game I pirate. For older console titles pirating is just about the only way to play them. Fuck shelling out money to some scalper just to play super metroid.

If they make more money for the publisher it gives them grounds to make better deals in the future. I don't know how much a publisher takes (a lot, I'd guess, but they can be useful if you actually need them) but it isn't 100%, they give the studio an advance payment and take a percentage but the studio does makes money from sales usually. Steam (Apple too on mobile) takes 30% of most titles, AAA games can negotiate a better deal of course. Steam also forces their hand on steam sales but I don't know how it is.

Games are closer to music I think, which is a really shitty business (even worse than games I'd say) for all but the top artists. They'd be closer to electronics when physical copies were a thing, then you need a distribution chain and are fucked if you don't have one, fucked if you miscalculate sales, etc.

It’s getting better but still optimized like ass, not to mention the newest big update made it to more of a grind, if you really want to level up you have to run around and just kill zombies. Kinda boring when your character doesn’t so much for damage in the beginning. Exploring buildings is more of a pain since the ones with good shit are very tight in space so if you wake up one zombie you wake up all of them in the house for the most part.

Almost anyone into or trying to get into linux gaming probably has 100s of windows-only titles. I do check out protondb if it's a non-linux release first but I'm still less likely to buy it. If a game has cracked multiplayer or is single player only, I won't buy it.

True. The only bad thing about pirate versions nowadays is that often you won't get updates and patches, or only a few of them. This wasn't a problem before digital distribution platforms exploded, since back then when most games were released their development cycle was finished and they had been properly tested. But nowadays most day one games are beta versions, and more like alpha versions for some. Of course, if companies are using this as a means to discourage piracy (which I believe they do), for me it only gives me another excuse to not support them.

This is also true. Most pirate sites are much better than Steam or any other legit alternative to just check which new games you might not know about are coming out. IGG is a great place for that since they also upload non-scene releases.

All digital games to be honest. I never truly got into Steam, never did I trust it when it showed up, I got a few games in there but that's it, don't think I've paid over $100 for the games I have. I also got some GOG games because they are DRM-free but that too I stopped getting. What I am doing is buying sixth gen console games (got a CRT), I've been enjoying them more than current modern games. I also have been enjoying consoles more in general, and this probably has to do with the fact that I'm on the PC all day, compared to mentally having a dedicated system or a change of space dedicated to gaming, if that make sense.

I keep up myself up to date with CFW on a Vita and 3DS. I'll pirate old console games no problem, even up to the GCN. I've stopped pirating PC games a few years ago, except for visual novels. I got too many games to play to pirate even more. I turned into a hoarder, I didn't imagine myself like this. All these games to play and no will to play them.
