In our dnd games I basically always do this. Pick a mildly intelligent monster species and make a character from it. Seems to come in handy most of the time and ends horribly the rest. No middle ground which is great.

Shale in DA:O is a shaved down and more sane version of a normal stone golem.

Mostly the same abilities as a stone golem and no conventional equipment slots, so it's weaker than a proper warrior, but it's still cool to have stomping around with its deadpan humour.

I don't like it when they're based on monsters. It doesn't feel like a real party member. It feels more like pokemon.

Teddie from Persona 4 is probably the best example of all these though, real deep stuff with his character and the killer both crossing the boundary between human and shadow.

Deekin from Neverwinter nights expansions was extremely good both gameplay and character wise. The fact that he never betrays you nor do you need to pass some skill-check to make him stay near the end only makes him even better in my eyes.

Non-human/Unique allies are the best if done properly, story-wise they can offer a different perspective on certain issues or how their species see things. Gameplay wise, they can offer something other characters are unable to like different skills or talents that can really change how you approach situations/battles.

Really depends on how well the characters themselves are written. So going with your examples I suppose I'm more in favor of Paper Mario and it's sequel TTYD than something like Dragon Quest where they're just guys you get to join the party

Seriously though, your critters were great. They actually changed how the game was played and you could even have Janken battles with them, you even had the option to fuse them to get more combinations, it was a treat.
