So I just finished FEAR and the thing that I really liked about it is how the paranormal part of the game was the source of the conflict, but Alma as herself wasn't the main antagonist, or at least, she wasn't the most prominent antagonist. I loved the fact that the whole story basically consists of three human military organizations, F.E.A.R, ATM Security and Replica Granted, one of them being just mind-controled clones, but still, their leader is human, even if a powerful as fuck psychic, and their strategies and tactics seemed human enough to count.
So what other vidya have a similar theme? Military stories where the source of conflict is paranormal, but the paranormal isn't acting as the main antagonist. S.T.A.L.K.E.R is kind of similar in this regard, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for as it has post-apo elements even if technically it is not post-apo
Also are the sequels worth playing? I heard bad things about them and I don't like the fact that they seem to be more monster-focused tbh, I don't actually think that Alma is that important to F.E.A.R as the creators claim she is, after all it is the Replica and the combat with them that really makes F.E.A.R click rather than her segments, but I'm definitely going to try the expansion packs.

I remember hating F.E.A.R. 2 and loving F.3.A.R.. However, the general consensus is that F.E.A.R. 2 is the "consolized" version of the first game, and F.3.A.R. isn't worth playing because it's by a different developer and designed to be played with co-op. F.E.A.R. Online never happened.

Necrovision is incredibly fun and has very cool aethetics, gives a slight B-grade console shooter feeling in the early WW1 portion of the game, but once you get into the illuminati vampire cult stuff it plays a bit more like painkiller. My only regret is that I was hoping Lost Company letting you play as zimmerman would be more diabolical, but it sort of wasn't, my favourite part is the barbed wire psychic powers.
>>15937091
Trying to remember, vampires have been fighting the demons from hell in the underground, the vampires try to employ zimmerman anc in the process make him a necromancer during WW1, he uses zombies and monsters against the eternal anglos including the player, player defeats zimmerman and becomes the necromancer, then goes to hell, kills satan, and depending on your difficulty setting, you end up with an ending somewhere between 'it was all a dream' and 'become the immortal lord of hell, the vampires, and the humans'

some shin megami tensei games are close but don't fit for different reasons:
>Strange Journey
story is about UN forces investigating a world in the antarctic, but not very much infighting among the humans, it's more like doom the jrpg
>Devil Survivor and early Persona games
lots of conflict between humans using demons/personas but not as much military, party members don't belong to military, but there are occasional enemy military factions such as the SDF and SS (yes, that SS)
>Digital Devil Saga
this might fit the most but I haven't actually played it so I can't confirm, characters are clearly part of a military group in an apocalyptic setting, and the intro is pretty much exactly what you describe, but the game was really laggy on my ps3 so I couldn't get very far
the Raidou games might also fit but I haven't even touched them so I don't have a clue

Again with this Fear meme? It was the blandest corridor shooter of its generation, people dropped it when they noticed the copypasted levels.
The jumpscares? Ripped off The Ring and they're completely at odds with the rest of the gameplay: Fear's not an horror shooter, it's a one gimmick modern shooter with jumpscare cutscenes.
I get it that weebs aren't familiar with anything outside of jrpgs, so they latch on whatever has a modicum of japan in other genres. But we're not all bottom feeders like you.

Unpopular opinion: I liked Fear 2 the most and have replayed it multiple times, including no-slowmo run on the highest difficulty. It was really fun. I loved Fear 1 as well but I prefer 2. It looks beautiful even now, has the most creepy segment in all Fear games, the weapons felt really good, loved the death animations of the enemies. Too bad it was so short. The expansion was also fun but surprisingly hard on the highest difficulty setting.

I like it's style the most even if the yellow filter isn't as subtle as the radio and it had stuff like the school ghosts section where it wasn't hard or fun to play through, but had that terrible constant flicker and non-stop noise to give you headaches.
It had a lot of nice setpieces even if the story had to take liberties to shove shit like the Replicas back in but it wasn't the best in terms of leveled being designed around shooting. I like it a lot tho and it definitely blows the lame xpacs for the first game out of the water. Haven't tried the DLC.

You don't understand what makes Cawadooty-tier shooters bad, and try to push the same criticism onto FEAR although they do not fucking apply. Cawadooty-tier shooters are not bad just because they are linear, but because they have nothing to compensate for being linear. Being linear in itself is not a bad things, this just means that the entire fun of the game will be taken from arena-type fights rather than exploration type-gameplay. Your entire game becomes a set of encounters that you go through one after another, this is not a bad things as long as those encounters are fun and interesting. FEAR's encounters ARE fun and interesting, they have good enough AI for the enemies to be a threat, the guns are different enough to be used in variety of situations and, to give the enemies different roles and priorities despite them being basically the same enemy It's obvious that you shouldn't approach an enemy with a shotgun up close, and in an open area, that same weapon will be less effective than an assault rifle, as well as throwing a few different types of enemies that make stuff more interesting, and the moveset is varied enough to make moving fun, frantic and interesting. Most importantly though, you are not stuck to a fucking wall, which means that you will be changing positions a lot and that your movement is actually important, you need to use strategy against your opponents and move in an logical fashion otherwise you're going to get fucked, and if you do things well, you are rewarded with a really awesome sequence of movement that just looks and feels great. Your yearly Activision trash is not good not because of it being linear, it's not good because it's encounters that are supposed to compensate for being linear are dogshit and not really interesting as it doesn't have good gun variety, it doesn't have intelligent AI, it doesn't have the free range of movement that FEAR had, it doesn't have enemy variety, it has nothing.
The Ring ripoff scenes are just dressing to give it it's own flavor, and don't actually matter. But they're still cool, they're not good as horror but they're pretty cool in the sense of a dark action story with horror elements. It feels almost 90's anime-esque, with it's Akira-tier plot and general cyberpunkiness. It is very cool, but it's not important and even if you don't like it, doesn't make the game much worse.

>they're not good as horror but they're pretty cool in the sense of a dark action story with horror elements
I think the horror elements in FEAR are more intended to create tension rather than induce pants-shitting fear. There'd be a pretty major whiplash is you're kung fu kicking enemies in one room while being expected to hide in a closet from scary little girls in the next room.
Instead the horror is merely the glue to hold your attention and keep you immersed during the downtime inbetween the gunfights, which is honestly much more preferable than simply walking from point A to point B (which is technically what you will already be doing).
54a01f No.15939005
>>15938986
Yeah that's the thing, FEAR is not really a horror game, it's an action game with horror elements. That's why I said that Alma isn't really that important to the game despite everything, she is the cherry on top, what really makes the game are the Replicas.

No nigger, this is not the theme I want. I want a team of marines having to face against other marines with demons/ghosts/aliens/monsters being a looming threat and the thing they're fighting over.
Think of FEAR how Replicas are fighting F.E.A.R operatives and ATM security guards over Alma, trying to free them. I know Replicas aren't fully human, but it still counts, as they are not portrayed as your typical monsters. I want shit like the End of Evangelion where Nerv and SEELE are shooting each other for the control of how the end of the fucking world will look like. I want a conflict between people, human against human, but the source of the conflict is paranormal, eldritch or horror-inspired in general. FEAR is the closest that came to it in vidya terms by having a human antagonist albeit a powerful psychic controled by the paranormal controling a bunch of clones an a corporation trying to cover their tracks as antagonists. Some SMT games were close. DOOM is completely not what I had in mind.
I want something paranormal happening, preferably something paranormal and of great impact and humans killing each other over the control of that paranormal thing. Be it whether or not to release a vengeful psychic ghost as in FEAR or anything else. That is not a common theme.

Jericho was slammed because of its pretty egregious use of QTEs, but I forgave it because I loved the atmosphere and the team members you could play as. They all had really distinct and creative supernatural abilities as well as decent characterization (One of them is an autistic blonde who's so good at math she affects reality). The premise of a cursed city that inevitably pulls you down its history of being plagued by primeval evil and corrupting every army that tried to fight it is fucking neat also.
It's not as good as undying and there definitely are janky parts, but it's definitely worth checking out.
