You would think, after all this time, Square (now Square Enix) would do another Super Mario RPG with Nintendo. I can't bring myself to play TTYD. If it's good, I know there will never be anything better and I'll probably want to fucking kill myself. If it's bad somehow I'll just end up disappointed and probably also want to kill myself. There's no real solution aside from not playing it. Honestly the only hope I have for the Mario RPGs is if they make a sequel to the first one, but with a job system based on powerups. I think that could be a fun idea. I wouldn't even mind if Geno and Mallow didn't come back, since their stories pretty much ended, and Lugi needs more of a spotlight, not to mention there's a bunch of other characters who would also work. I'm probably better off waiting for a Kirby RPG with a job system based off copy abilities at this point, at least HAL wouldn't fuck it up.

>TTYD, Melee, Sunshine, and Wind Waker were all superb games (at least imo).

Well, you have stit taste then.

Melee was a no-fun-allowed simulator that added some of the worst characters in the series, that autists obsess over for no other reason other than nostalgia. The reason why Dr. Mario isn't an echo fighter is pretty much because Meleefags would throw a tantrum.

Sunshine amplified Mario's problem of bland stage settings to the worst it has ever been, and gave you a gimmick that trivialized platforming in a fucking platformer. The only fun parts were the FLUDDless stages, in other words, the stages that completely bypass the biggest new addition to the game. Galaxy and Odyssey had exactly the same problem, but at least the stages weren't as shit.

Wind Waker was proto-BOTW, taking what in other games was content after content, and spacing it apart with minutes of fucking nothing at a time. At least BOTW gave you something more to look at than BLUE.

>The GameCube did have more than just those 4 great games, so it's hard to discredit them all simply for just being on the GameCube's library.

You keep trying to imply that I'm discrediting Gamecube games because they're on the Gamecube, and I've already told you that's false. The Gamecube's lack of good games is what makes it bad, not the other way around. I wouldn't magically like Melee if it was on Wii or N64 or whatever.

I mean you like Super Mario 64 which is just Sunshine but on the N64. I don't play many video games, but I have played Mario 64 and I'm honestly not impressed with it, or really any Mario game if I'm being honest.

c9e301  No.15929989

>>15929979

Mario 64 didn't have the most original level settings, but it had more than one theme, at the very fucking least.

Mario 64 had some solid platforming challenges, something Sunshine tried to have but could not because they gave you a gimmick that makes it physically impossible to fail a jump unless you are a mental fucking invalid. Just like the stages that didn't focus on gravity in Galaxy and captureless runs of Odyssey, the parts without FLUDD were the only good and even remotely challenging parts of Sunshine. Too bad they were the severe fucking minority. And while 64 had a few tedious stars, nothing will be as fucking tedious as Sunshine's blue coins, replacing 1/5 of the game, 1/5 that could have been interesting platforming challenges, or interesting missions of any other kind.

Then there's smaller stuff, like Sunshine's OST being forgettable except Delfino Plaza - the song you're forced to hear more than any other, coincidentally. That, and for as broken as 64 is, I never ran into any gliches without going out of my way for them, except maybe that strange thing where you stick on the edge. Meanwhile, Sunshine, I clipped through that damn lilypad several times.

A few, but one of the better Paper Mario inspired games is Under Hero. It's faint but you can taste hints of it with some of the style and dialogue, but the combat system is strangely similar to Mario RPGs in that they rely on a lot of timing to attack and dodge. Though it's in time with the music too, which was a good spin.

It actually is a really fun game, especially the end since it actually does something like what Super Paper Mario tried to do but way better.

I get you, I was talking on a basic level design basis that Sunshine and 64 are basically the same. Maybe Sunshine has longer gaps, but that's really only there because Fludd makes you have to do it, as opposed to the mostly optional long jump from 64 that basically covers the same distance just less controlled but faster. I'm sure if I did some statistical analysis on d-distance or some shit I'd find that the jumps would be functionally the same. I'd say Mario was better in 2D, but when the biggest contenders are one of the first games like it in existence, a game that relies heavily on set pieces, and an intentionally casualized game, I'm not really sure anymore. Then again I'm the kind of person that thinks Banjo Tooie is a pretty good Metroidvania so clearly I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Previously, all I would have recommended to you was Tales of Symphonia or something similar. Since before you mentioned your love for Pikmin, all I really knew about you is that you like to play Jrpgs and, well, that was about it. It seems like you have no problems writing off entire series (Smash), not because they were terrible games with serious faults per se, but only because their gameplay just wasn't to your specific liking. Just seems like a cheap way calling a game like Melee "shit" if you ask me. It's like me (someone who doesn't like RTS games at all) calling StarCraft 1 shit due to my own subjective preferences.

>rushed games

Most games are rushed to a degree. I learned this the hard way when I became a 3D modeler for a small college project. Deadlines are, well, a mess. Devs are on the clock most of the time and the great ideas they have aren't always implemented. Most "finished" games are rushed in some sense, but Sunshine and Wind Waker were pretty well-done for the most part. I'd be surprised if you, despite them being short to you because you feel they're rushed or whatever, didn't find them fun whatsoever in the final product you got.

>easy Wind Waker

How skilled are you at games, if you don't mind me asking? Do you usually breeze through most games or no? If it's difficulty you're after, try giving the Souls series a spin. They're similar to Zelda's gameplay, but unlike the cartoony Wind Waker which is clearly geared towards kids, the Souls series might offer the mature and difficult experience that 18+ people like yourself are looking for.

I play JRPGs for the gameplay, my favorite Final Fantasy is 5, so yeah that's really all that matters to me. I also like breaking the game over it's knees.

You seem to not fucking understand what rushed means, so I don't think you know what you're talking about. Sunshine is padded to retarded levels where you have to clear 7 of the 8 missions in a level for no reason other than they wanted you to do that, meaning that every optional shine is pointless unless you want a postcard or the joy of 100%, not to mention the over reliance on red coin missions telling me they couldn't even finish a satisfying 7 missions per level. Wind Waker is much better done, but it's clear they only had one difficult dungeon done by the time they hit crunch time, and probably had a much better idea for whatever the Triforce hunt was piecemealed together from.

As for difficulty, I'm terrible at video games but even Wind Waker was a bit below my skill level. and True Arena Kirby gives me trouble consistently since I don't fucking block because I'm retarded. My favorite Zelda games are MM and the GameBoy trilogy, Minish Cap is pretty good, and I have a soft spot for the DS games even though they're probably terrible.

As for the Darkdemonblood series, Dark Souls doesn't look hard, it looks slow and is actually pretty forgiving since you can get your EXP back instead of losing it forever, fucking Dragon Quest is less forgiving than that. Demon's Souls does look hard though, I like the idea of a game fucking you over if you fuck up, even if I probably wouldn't play it. If I want to play a hard game that looks fun, I'll just play something by Platinum or Clover or something, The Wonderful 101 was pretty great. I should probably play Okami one of these days, actually.

>Sunshine is padded to retarded levels where you have to clear 7 of the 8 missions in a level for no reason other than they wanted you to do that

No. Every level had a star where you have to chase down Shadow Mario. In order to assess the lava mountain, you just had to complete all the Shadow Mario stars of each of the levels. Then the plaza gets flooded afterwards.

That's just how the game is structured. The "pointless" stars that come before these Shadow Mario ones are there to stop you from simply hopping from one level to the level, only doing SM stars to quickly assess the final level too early. Speedrunners know how skip stars, sure (WR is about 1.5 hours), but the game will give most players more than 1.5 hours of playtime for their buck. Since usually, they go through and complete these "pointless" stars in sequence as intended. Otherwise, they could have had a really short Sunshine experience from start to finish.

Every level had a red coin star iirc, but I'm not sure why you thought those were a problem. I didn't have difficulties doing these easter egg hunt levels myself. My only coin-related issues with Sunshine weren't with finding the red ones, but finding all the hidden blue ones throughout the world. Which were a pain.

[Truthfully, my memory on Sunshine is a bit hazy. I 100%'d it 4 years back, so I'm just faintly remembering whatever issues I had with it.]

Perhaps it's time to replay again to refresh my memory again. But collecting red coins or completing "pointless" stars in a row weren't at all issues I had with it. I think… collecting blue coins, that shitty gondola lava ride, and that hard yoshi island level were my main problems with Sunshine.

>difficult WW dungeon

Which one gave you troubles?

24d5ed  No.15932006

>>15930165

You missed the point. WHY is Shadow Mario required? Why should I have to clear those specific missions? The only totally required stars in 64 are the first one in Bob-omb Battlefield and the first one in Dire Dire Docks. If every 7th mission weren't required, then all the plaza and secret shines would have a point. And the problem with red coin stars isn't that each level had one. The problem is that several levels had several of them, meaning that they just threw it together because they didn't have time to do anything with it. I'd rather have a short game that was fun and didn't waste my fucking time. At least the watermelon and every annoying shine you mentioned (aside from the final boat ride) you don't ever need to touch because it doesn't actually advance the game state.

And for WW, it's less about difficulty and more about how none of them but the Wind Temple require you to do anything but progress linearly through the dungeon. The only way the game could be more patronizing is if, after you get the dungeon item then immediately get a shortcut back to the room you need to use the item in (this happens in almost every dungeon by the way), is if the "helper" character then told you exactly what to do (this is why I haven't played Skyward Sword). The Wind Temple requires you to think a little which is more than I can say for most of the dungeons. I will say that I prefer the overworld of WW greatly compared to most other Zelda games, but unfortunately that's only because it sort of resembles the first game but a lot worse. I prefer BotW to most other console Zeldas for similar reasons, you've probably seen me in a BotW threat desperately wishing for a remake of the first game in it's engine.

I notice you aren't trying to shill Smash to me, because I've got a lot to say about it. How about it's only fun with friends? Because if you don't have friends, you'r better off playing Kirby Super Star or any of the modern Kirby games, they're all a better spin on the same general mechanics.

Mechanically BotW is the better game. Game design wise, WW barely wins out. Both of them are worse than the first Zelda, I don't know how you manage to fuck that up aside from running out of time, which they did. Did you know: Eiji Aounuma has never beaten the first Zelda? Did you also know: Hidemaro Fujibayashi directed the following Zelda games, both Oracle games, Minish Cap, Skyward Sword, and Breath of the Wild. So he basically directed most of the best and worst Zelda games. He also actually really likes the first Zelda, and given how SS and BotW are pretty much oppposite ends of the spectrum I'd rather have him in charge of Zelda than Aounuma.

probably many of the good ones from M&L. paper mario series had better tracks and varied ones for all bosses, making the experience great, but M&L bosses had great mechanics

>favorite power

I don't have one tbh

>Favorite level

Crystal Palace is a memorable dungeon. Train from TTYD is a memorable level. Most of the good dungeons come from Paper mario series, while M&L excel in battle gameplay

>any hope for the future

M&L is doing fine, but there is no hope for good paper marios unless nintendo actually gets in touch with its customers and realizes the new paper marios and complete garbage.

There is more hope in fan contribution and work than an actual new good paper mario at this point. Somebody needs to mod TTYD and make Paper Luigi's and the magical compass.

Boy did they completely butcher the boss theme in the Bowser's Inside Story remake. Which is funny because the rest of the remakes, while certainly not perfect, seem better then the attempts made in Superstar Saga remake soundtracks.

Why is Yoko Shimomura so terrible at arranging her own Mario and Luigi soundtracks? The new songs added to each remake sound fine and quality, yet the re-arranges of the past music sounds cheap and thus creates this weird discrepancy.

Gonna take the opportunity to shill/talk about this game for a minute because the demo made me fall in love with it and it looks very promising.

Demo link (doesn't work through archive, naturally): https://archive.fo/q7LDK#selection-613.0-613.8

Pros:

>demo has hours of content, including a dungeon, half a dozen side quests, two secret bosses, and a hard mode

>huge improvement on the paper mario battle system - bosses and normal enemies are actually challenging (on hard mode, at least), or require some planning to reduce damage taken

<you can switch around characters' turn order and position, with the frontmost character taking more attacks but getting a power boost in exchange

<you can have one character give his turn to the other, allowing him to act twice but dealing less damage due to fatigue

<action commands are almost identical to paper mario, and applied in almost the same way

>much more effort went into environmental interaction and puzzle solving/platforming, as well as combining abilities from party members

>cooking is useful because healing items are pretty shitty by default and your characters have low health

>soundtrack suits the environments and actions well

>side quests are fun and engaging, including one which is a pretty obvious homage to PM's theatre-based battle system

>made by spics, so no poz

Cons:

>Unity

>fucking Unity

<characters feel floaty and can slip off platforms or get stuck on "walls" by moving too close to them

<what feels like upwards of 10 frames of input lag due to fucking Unity, which isn't good for a combat system based on timing

>camera is so close and areas are so dense you can miss stuff unless you hug the foreground on every screen

>most character designs aren't noticeably masculine or feminine, which makes background characters feel less distinct

>several gameplay mechanics (EXP progression, level-ups, badge system) are direct rips from Paper Mario, which feels lazy even though they're implemented well

>made by spics, so the dialogue is sometimes really wonky

The demo took me about 3 hours to 100%, and it was very satisfying to do so.

>Under Hero

Is that one actually good? The sprite art and lack of battle transitions looked very awkward, but I'm starved for good JRPGs that use more than menus for combat.

>What is your favorite Mario RPG?

TTYD for everything but difficulty, and SMRPG for the difficulty.

>Who is your favorite party member?

Bow. I'm a sucker for former villain/enemy party members like boos and goombas, and Bow is cute on top of that.

>Who is your favorite boss?

Rawk Hawk has a cool gimmick when he grabs onto the ceiling, but aside form that he's remarkably weak and easy (although most TTYD bosses are, so that's not exactly his fault). In terms of overall experience, I like Cortez a lot too, since chapter 5 is one of my favourites and he's interesting both visually and mechanically. I also respect any boss who fucking murders half the audience.

>What is your favorite power?

Earthquake or whatever it was called in TTYD. Using a ground pound move to hit enemies on the ceiling never gets old.

>What is your favorite level/section/chapter/area/etc.

Finding Bobbery as a partner. His story is actually quite sad, and it's really heartwarming to help him come to terms with his wife's death.

>Is there any hope for the future?

No. The series has been bad for long than it's been good now, and even the handheld games are infested with the same committee-driven, Miyamoto-pandering design philosophies as the console titles.

My favorite Mario RPG was TTYD. It was my first one and I love the story and the humor along with it.

My favorite party members in TTYD were the baby Yoshi and Admiral Bobbery. I also loved being Bowser in SPM.

Fighting Mr.L all those times were really fun. I also enjoyed the Doopliss battle in Chapter 6 ( I think ) of TTYD.

Didn't really have a favorite power up, though Yoshis running my fatass around was really useful.

In TTYD I honestly loved all the sections, but the most memorable to me were the Glitzpit and the Train ride stages.

I wish the faggots at nintendo and intellegent systems actually make the paper mario games story bound again instead of making it another random rpg for retards. Traditional rpgs with less story elements should be made for the mario and luigi series while their more story bounded rpgs should of been left with paper mario. That's what made paper mario fun in the first place.

I thought Dream Team was actually pretty good, at least compared to Paper Jam. Although Dream Team had a bit of a problem with basically all Giant Battles being pretty much the same which tends to feel like they're dragging on. Although I personally did enjoy one of the last ones.

If you've played BiS at all you also get to see all the "upgrades" bowser got from there be applied to the dream team bowser battles which I thought was pretty neat. The game is mostly a Luigi character development game which I liked a lot.

i havent played any of the paper mario games, only the M&L and SMRPG. Out of them, I find Bowsers inside Story having the most impact for me, largely in the variety of gameplay not only between the bros and bowser, but within. I do wish these games were harder, it didnt take me that long to finish any of the mario and luigi games or smrpg
