I think Sengoku Rance is better. The actual combat has less depth while still being great, but the rest of the SR package blows away HoMM3. Music, characters, story, and setting are all significantly better in SR. Both games are still in my favorites list, and I still see myself replaying both year after year after year. But I still think Sengoku Rance managed to do the impossible: being a better TBS game than HoMM3.

but that's wrong, SotN is a great forefather of the genre but future igavanias like OOE or Aria of Sorrow greatly polish it, with faster pacing, better boss fights, not having empty rooms with stale enemy placements, etc. The one thing that will always be good is the soundtrack and its timeless artstyle (which future igavanias also possess)
Regarding Super Metroid, You could argue Zero mission updated the gameplay with faster pacing, grabbing on ledges, etc, but Super Metroid as a whole still is a better game than the other 2D metroids. It's been surpassed gameplay wise by AM2R, however Super Metroid is still better as a whole due to its more whole content.
