But I mainly wanted to ask about people's opinions on magic system, on whether just having one main MP gauge per character is overall a better option than having a magic charge per spell, like in Final Fantasy 1.
I'm not much of a JRPG enthusiast, but I'm get a kick out of the first Final Fantasy, something about just starting the game and just making your characters from scratch, and the game just dropping you in the middle of nowhere.
I'm also more leaning towards the classic fantasy setting, so that's a plus for me as well.
That said, I wouldn't mind having a job changing system and perma death for party members, more options for character customization, etc.
But what are your thoughts on the genre?

You do make a good point there.
I suppose any game that follows the standard of having random battles, turn based combat and some form of micro management (items/resources, etc).
I'd include a level up system, but then I realize that not all JRPGs level up using conventional EXP systems per character.

Sounds like you would really like Dragon Quest III. It has most of what you're looking for; the only thing missing is perma death. Play either the SNES remake or the GBC remake. The SNES version was only released in Japan, but it has been fan translated. Just make sure you're using the 1.1 patch as the 1.0 patch has a bug that causes the game to crash and delete all your saves if you talk to a certain NPC. The GBC version is more or less the same as the SNES version, but with a little extra content and vastly inferior sound and graphics.

Dragon Quest, the "first jrpg" which started this whole gay genre, took inspiration from Wizardry and especially Ultima. So you could point to those games as the proto-jrpg, which themselves were based off tabletop rpgs. Later wrpgs took from real rpg, while jrpgs took from Dragon Slayer, Dragon Quest, and maybe Megami Tensei. At this point there's so much cross-contamination, we might as well classify only on country of origin.

Why not just call them Wizardry-like and Ultima-like then? That seems more straightforward. Also the japs had RPGs before Dragon Quest, like The Black Onyx that was basically a Wizardry clone.
But even Ultima and Wizardry weren't the earliest western RPGs. In the 70's they had mainframe games like Oubliette, and DND aka Dungeons of the Necromancer's Domain (which later got ported to home computers as Telengard).

all games are designed with the thought of you not escaping from all random encounters you get while doing main storyline in mind, and that's enough to finish all games without grinding. the encounter rate is so high that it always feels like grinding anyway though
I wish there were jrpgs without random encounters and no respawns.
Enemies visible on map are still shit because they always respawn after five seconds or after going back to the location so killing them is a pointless chore. I think they stopped catering to their hardcore audience a long time ago. Most developers think hard mode is just up the damage and health and call it day.
A true hard mode takes more time to make. You can up the damage and health a little but don't make it where every attack gets you to critical or you can just get stuck in a nasty combo loop that wipes your party because of the luck of the AI pattern choices. Hard mode should give new properties and attacks to enemies in comparison to the ones in normal. Enemies and Bosses can be hard without being a total damage sponge if you give them the appropriate abilities. They can even tune or combine any of all the abilities in the game if they wanted to be cost effective.

I really enjoyed Grandia's battle system which is a mixture of real-time and turn-based, in that there is a bar where you see when an opponent/ally is idle/preparing to attack/attacking and if you attack him at the right moment you can cancel his turn, and the same thing can happen to you. It also borrows a page from elder scrolls, in that in order to increase your skills/magic/weapon you need to use it.
Even though there is a meme that all JRPGs play the same, most of the ones that I played have some gimmicks to their battle system, Legend of Legaia has you inputting commands to perform different combos, Xenogears also does this but adds mech battles as well which also have a fuel mechanic, Wild Arms 1 & 2 has each character with a different gimmick, but is also has a special bar that you charge with normal attacks and you use it for special attacks, in 2 it doesn't get depleted, with the use of special attacks, but there are even more special attacks that deplete it(if I remember it correctly), Lunar 1 has the party layout that is a cross between regular jrpgs and srpgs, and so on. Yes there are JRPGs that play the same, just like with CRPGs or WRPGs, but they don't all play the same.

Also Legend of Mana's setting but any setting with strange and fantastical elements is appreciated and between the odd residents of different cities and the way each place has it's own feeling and different kind of weird, while still being repeatably familiar is just comfy. Like item shops run by sentient teapots, or how you'd see the odd statue, only to eventually find out that they all look like students from the school…only to then realize that the reason is that their teacher is a gorgon. It's the sort of fantasy setting I wish there were more of.

The biggest problem with 100% Berseria is going to be grinding. You don't need to grind to win, but one of the achievements is for getting level 200. If you plan to do that, you need to set up fights so you are always pulling more than one encounter at once. This leads to enemies always being a higher level than you, and more enemies in any given encounter. Ironically, the game's combat system works out better like this, and worse in boss battles. Horde fights mean you are constantly gaining, and using the points needed for special moves and longer combo strings. That and some characters have special moves that are designed almost specifically for group fights, and Magilou can easily bounce back and forth between one and four through her anti-magic magic bullshit.

>Favourite mechanics/systems
I really enjoyed FF12's combat system, making sure it was on real time of course.
I really enjoyed FF12 despite all its flaws, I think the best way to play the game is playing the vanilla version with an imposed class challenge. Similar to how the Zodiac version worked (or the PS4 one) but without the broken classes from the PS2 zodiac version of the game. There's a gamefaqs class challenge that has some very interesting classes that make the game much more enjoyable, forcing you to play with all characters instead of just 3 that become superman mid-way through the game. Some highlights of the enforced class challenge
>No quickenings
No characters are allowed to use them, quickenings are only given to magic based classes to increase their MP pool (Red mage gets 2, Black mage gets 3 for example). This means stringing crazy quickenings that could one-shot bosses are no longer an option, forcing you to strategize. Strategizing obviously involves having a balanced party, attempting to play this game without a White Mage or a Chemist makes the game practically impossible.
>Healing and items
Healing can only be done by classes with healing, so classes such as the White Mage or Red Mage. Items can only be used by the Chemist (some other classes are allowed offense-based items) making the game considerably harder. You can't just be revived by anyone, you also need to make sure your healers aren't killed in battles otherwise you lose your ability to heal/revive.
>Strategy
Having a balanced crew is of the utmost importance, that means having a bruiser, tank, debuffer, healer and other varieties of classes is essential for completing the game and not getting raped in every battle. I never had the need to grind as switching around characters depending on your enemy weaknesses was always effective. Some classes in the late game become less useful, for example the Thief (the trade-off being that its the fastest class and can net you some good dough thanks to his ability to steal, but is overall pretty weak except for evasion & shield block).
Overall, I found this way of playing the game really changed up the combat and gameplay, this of course does not fix the somewhat lacking story and characters. I'm currently playing the PS4 version of FF12 and so far I'm enjoying it. It seems to have fixed some of the issues I found with IZJS and being able to double class is pretty neat. I'm still following the no quickenings/items for chemist only rules as I think these are pretty neat (also out of habit).

what does that sentence even mean? I am saying that Draconian mode bosses is harder then Shin Megami Tensei on SNES. Because powerleveling is not really an option in Draconian mode then every encounter is like a puzzle where you need to find the perfect combination of debuffs and buffs along with unsealing the right pep moves just to not get completely wiped out in one round. Have you even played DQ 11with strong monsters + Less EXP enabled? In draconian mode even your typical encounter can be a huge drain on your MP and HP if you pull your punches. Every boss encounter is literally trial an error until you figure out a tactic and even then their is a degree of luck based on weather or not RNG is in your favor.

At the time Chrono Trigger was kind of amazing because it had "natural" looking turn based combat. Before then you had battles where your characters stood in a line and swung a sword in a 3 frame animation several feet away from a stationary image of an enemy. Animated enemy sprites and character movement was pretty damn cool in comparison.
But even by today's standards the game does a lot right. It has detailed, colorful, and interesting environments. The story is simple, but fun and not very overbearing. Combat is fun and it had the combo tech system, which as also fairly unique. There is a lot to do in terms of content and new game+ and ending hunting adds to it. It also has one of the best soundtracks of the era. It's one of the few games I can go back to and enjoy even after playing through it several times.

The thing about SquareSoft is how obvious it was they were trying to get away from the turn based formula for years. The turn based systems of old RPG's (even western RPGs) was in part due to system constraints. The very earliest JRPG's where all action RPG's like Y's, Hylide or Xanadu. I often wonder if the traditional FF developers given the freedom of modern technology wouldn't make garbage similar to FF13 or 15 given the opertunity and that most of their creativity was born out of the constraints of the medium forcing them to come up with innovative and clever solutions. I also consider the same thing in terms of game design in general, that now that developers are unrestrained now they can indulge their worst impulses and this is what is leading to bad game design. To give a bit of substance to my assumptions I give both the cases of John Romero praising Nudoom and Hironobu Sakaguchi praising FF15.

I don't like this argument. I absolutely love turn based games (not even just JRPGs) and loathe action games (especially those that require twitch reflexes). Action games can be very stressful, and turn based games can either be stressful or not (it depends on what game you're playing and if you're constraining yourself).
I think that turn based games in general allow for much more varied gameplay. I don't know how many different "challenge runs" some of the Final Fantasy games have but my favorite one is the "Excalibur 2 Perfect Game" in FFIX. Despite FFIX being a pretty mediocre game in retrospect the type of no xp allowed but still get everything game mode is really interesting and not something you see a lot in modern gaming. Also mixing in the fact that you're timed (12 hours) is an extra element to the puzzle.
Your typical AAA action game today is a 6-12 hour interactive story with no replay value. The modern final fantasy game is mash x to win while colorful lights fill the screen and we show you product placement for Ramen.

Kind of hard to pin down really. I would say I would prefer Dungeon Crawlers the most but that would be short selling the other titles I enjoy that don't fall into that genre.

I prefer sci-fi settings for sure.

Instead of classes, games that have fixed roles for each character in combat, and then creates great synergy between each role is what I like.
But I really like the Shogun class in EOIII It was the first command class alongside the Sovereign and I liked the idea and the implementation. In general I really liked the class design in that game and sub-classing also made it fun.

D-Counter in BoFV is a great narrative mechanic as well as a good way to limit the players use of a broken ability. Sure, it's easy to circumvent this with another game mechanic but if you play the game in a single "life" it's really powerful at instilling tension and regulating your actions in and out of combat.
I also liked the overworld persisting into combat as opposed to the more traditional battle screen you transition too in most JRPGs. It made trapping and the location you picked some fights more important and going back to my love of combat roles: Ryu, Nina, and Rin are all great at working together with their various strengths and weaknesses. Ryu is a DPS, Rin has range and the ability to inflict status effects. She can also reposition enemies. And Nina is a trap master with a couple ranged line shot attacks for enemies that get baited into standing single file.

Figured it might be worth mentioning here. Apparently Soul Blazer got an English fan retranslation patch lately.
>Steppolo Steppi made a retranslation of Soul Blazer, a true classic by Quintet, as he thought that Enix’s translation was flawed. Now you can enjoy the first chapter of the Heaven and Earth trilogy uncensored! However, the spells and equipment had some liberties taken, as the translator was unable to acquire a literal translation of their names.

why do people like it then? explain it to me. you just do that one QTE for every attack and thats all the gameplay depth the game had. it was as shallow as a kiddy pool.

Most of the devs from the squaresoft era have splintered off to other dev studios or left the industry entirely. Modern Squeenix is trash because the company pushes mass appeal bullshit like everyone else and most of their staff are total faggots, like the retard that fucked up Star Ocean 5 to appeal to western game journos and made a bargain bin stuffer.

> what makes a good thief class? (rather arbitrary question I know, but I really like this class)
On a basic level: evasion, accuracy, and utility, especially the type that makes the player feel clever when used well.
> what classes do you think a game should have outside of the standard Warrior, Thief, Mage classes without the game going overboard with redundant classes / jobs?
There should at least be classes that act as a showcase for the basics of a turn-based game (stats and how they affect battle, damage types, healing, buffs and debuffs, etc.) as well as any unique mechanics it may have. Beyond that, class selection should be limited only by the developers' ability to make a class meaningfully different (and viable, hopefully) from others in its category. With that said, I think it's easy to end up with too many damage-dealing classes since an open-ended role like that lends itself to specialization and gimmicks more easily than something like healing.

I've been playing DQ2. I like that I am thrown into a world to explore and have to find my way by piecemealing clues, but I really don't like how only the MC is of any use and the other two characters just cost me money in revives while trying to heal.

It's not too bad, even if you're doing the vanilla version. Everyone uses guns and items become your "spells". It gets even easier with all the flat boosts on the vanilla/machinist trees.

I could never get into the SMT games aside from the first one. I don't like the demon fusing mechanic, which is the main gimmick of the series, because it felt too much like a crafting system. There's nothing objectively wrong with it; I just don't like crafting systems. The reason why the first one is my favorite is because you can almost completely bypass it by having the characters spam machine guns at the enemy.

You can focus less on fusion in Majin Tensei 2 since it's a SRPG and your demons actually get "rank ups" for stats and even equip gear. You can be completely fine with just demons recruited in this game and you can keep very low level demons for a long time.
You also get 4-5 human characters who level up normally, so you can do a mostly human run even.
The only thing you'll be truly lacking is the skill inheritance system from fusion, which isn't that bad since that system can break the game hard if you abuse it.
