In some point of this thread, probably there will be some person going all "the switch is last gen" or something, but to clarify, it is a current generation portable device.
In terms of features and programming, it is identical to the Xbox one or PS4, as in you can get the code from the other consoles, basically copy,change some names and paste it and the system just runs it with the same picture quality as a PS4 or Xbox one, but at wonderful 4 frames per second.
The actual problems of the switch are the memory speed (only 25GB/s due nintendo being unable to use more than two memory chips without draining the battery like a game gear), and the storage size (16-32GB, when games are getting at bullshit 100GB+ sizes).
The rest, you can go around, dodge, remove some details here and there and it just werks.

Not really, Nudoom on switch took a hit on textures, and they removed the "Snapmap" that nobody used, If you wanna talk about Suffering, Wolfenstein II was nothing but shit, and they couldn't compress it, game HAS to be loaded;

I actually like the joycons when they're detached, mainly because of basically keeping my hands separate, a lot like the wiimote+nunchuk combo, I recently was loaned a 3d printed shell that offsets the right joycon when attached to the switch, it works really well.
I wish they were more comfortable though, but I've gotten a bit of mileage in co-op games with just 2 joycons and a friend. I hope Nintendo Revises them (again) though, because the joycon stick's components are all above the shell, due to space, I wouldn't mind if they made the things a little bigger.

Nothing good came of the PS4 due to the fact that they never had to compete with anyone. Microsoft barely entered the foot notes this generation, and Nintendo presented 2 different consoles to compete with them. When the PS5 inevitably comes, it's also going to be complete horseshit, because they're currently in a state where they don't feel like they have to compete. They've won the western market and are probably preparing to fight over the Chinese market. In all honest, if the Xbone would have been competitive (and not thrown their market share away simply by trying to go digital-only) this would have been a pretty strong generation from everybody. The Switch has been an impressive offering, but that is mostly due to the fact that Nintendo has been trying to fight Sony in a market that they won by simply filling the power vacuum that was left when Microsoft stuck a gun in their mouths and pulled the trigger. The best ways to put Sony back in line is for them to lose the western market and to fall flat on their asses in the Chinese market.
tl;dr - consoles suck when there isn't a successful competitor to instill humility and effort.

Nintendo has found their Niche, The Switch, despite being underpowered in terms of APU and Memory bandwidth, has stepped into the right direction in embracing familiar APIs and development tools.
The Wii U was a fucking nightmare to develop for, using hardware that nobody in the industry was too familiar with, though they had other problems, like being unable to market the damn thing.

The thing about the PS5 is that it could still have a big graphical leap because the PS4 uses an APU. Rumor has it that the PS5 will have a dedicated GPU so there's more to work with just by adding something the PS4 lacked. Although that same rumor places the PS5 pricepoint at $500 which is a hard sell (See: PS3 and Xbone launches).
I don't even want a big tech leap anyways because it's probably just going to be used for more photo-realistic smelly kike lesbian makeouts. I don't know, man, I just want my upgradable handheld that plays vidya, people give Switch a lot of (well deserved shit) but I really, really like the OS for the thing, it's snappy, straight to the point, and has a low overhead, it makes me wish for something similar for phones, because Android is a fucking dumpster fire with memory leaks out the wazoo and bloat and IOS is gated as fuck.

Just tested this on the Switch with the Retroarch emulator on the .nsp, no problems so far. You can even adjust the CPU clock speed to its intended maximum with Retroarch, something Nintendo wouldn't dream of letting anyone do. NES, Atari 2600, and MAME are also fine (although some MAME roms cause the app to crash on the nightly I'm using). The N64 one needs some optimization though.

If you're not a buyfaggot and have softmodded your Switch for Piracy then you can use a Homebrew application called Checkpoint to backup saves.
I even used Checkpoint to dump and modify my Pokemon LGP save file so I could complete the fucking Pokedex and not have to grind so damn much. I used Checkpoint to unlock everything in Smash Brothers Ultimate with a 3rd party save file. I took my save file for Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (Wii U version), converted it to Switch version using a tool on my PC, then copied it to my Switch and restored it using Checkpoint so I didn't have to start the entire game over on the Switch version.

The joy-cons, the controllers, are 40% more expensive than same-generation gamepads while not taking up even half the mass. Spirits are just jpeg gimmicks that set different parameters for not-event matches, almost nothing you can't already do in custom smash or fucking around with the settings enough.
