I feel like, at this point, we'd need a major market disruption that opens the door to tons of new people to make vidya. Right now, developer kits for stuff like the Xbone or PS4 cost tens of thousands of dollars and are a huge pain to work on. If that tech could be simplified and miniaturized and somehow distributed to the mass market (vaguely like what the Net Yaroze was supposed to do), maybe we'd see a second renaissance. Although personally, I think all that would happen is the market would get flooded with absolute drek - like the Steam store or XBL Store, but even worse if you can imagine it

There was one occasion a few years ago wherein I was talking to some DotA 2 addicts, and I explained I disliked the game because it had zero lore; the characters didn't even have names, and were referred to by their titles (Phantom Lancer, Shadow Fiend, Storm Spirit, etc.). They aggressively corrected me: these characters DO have names, thank you very much, and they DO have lore, and if you had read the wiki like WE did then you'd understand it you fucking philistine.
That explanation in turn reminded me of Halo cucks defending their game as "having a really good story if you read the books" and I decided to stop bothering with it.

Do you think the wiki just pulls the lore out of it's ass? All of that's in game. The only thing you'd need the wiki for is the lore that's attached to each and every cosmetic item in the game, but those are usually 2 sentences blurbs and those are also in the game, it's just the issue of most people not being retarded enough to collect each and every piece for "the complete lore"
dcfe6c No.15917593

I disagree Morrowind isn't good because of the lore, it's good because of how the lore is placed within the game. Morrowind would be absolute shit if it was just the base game with the lore smacked at you at the beginning in one text file dump.
The lore in Morrowind instead is sprinkled around, hidden in books, dialogue, and general design of areas. Half the game is finding the lore and realizing how it intertwines with what is going on in the questlines.
So no, you're wrong. The lore isn't what makes Morrowind memorable, it's that finding and learning the lore is basically a game in and of itself. It's one of the only reasons people look fondly on the game.

Way to miss the point, retard. I happen to greatly enjoy a game with good lore. What I dislike (such as in DotA2) is a game which has tonnes of lore, but which only makes it accessible through disconnected in-game descriptions or out-of-game wikis. If the DotA2 team wants me to care about their characters and their proud lineages and wars and cultures, then that should be a relevant part of the game, or at least easily accessible within the game itself. DotA2 tries to have it cake and eat it, which I find repulsive because there are so many games which handle the issue better.
>>15917572
>>15917586
It's not that the lore isn't there, it's that it has no bearing on the game whatsoever. You could copy-paste Lorem Ipsum into that text frame and it wouldn't make a lick of difference. Christ, look at it: it's the kind of wall-o-text that would have gotten a failing grade in an HTML course in 2006, and I'm supposed to treat it like it's an integral part of the character?
I know characters have voice lines referring to other characters based on The Lore™ (and the same is true of items, I think) but the overall approach is akin to playing chess on a board balancing atop The Lord of the Rings with pieces styled to look like hobbits, elves, and dwarves. The two things are part of the same world, sure, but they don't feel like it.

Lore has always been extra fluff for the purposes of individual immersion. That is to say, lore is there for the people that like to read. Whether it has "bearing on the story" is subjective to the player, unless the game forces lore down your throat in cutscenes.
And that's another point. Games that force lore with cutscenes are usually RPGs. Dota is not even close to an RPG.

At least fighting games have arcade modes which show a character's origin and provide some unique dialogue or key art. I wouldn't have anything against DotA 2 if there were some single-player mode where you could spend 10 minutes fighting reskinned creeps/heroes bookended by narration. I'm not asking for the world here: all I want is for the lore to be more than generic fantasy drivel pasted to a character on the select screen.
>Did you expect every DOTA match to have some huge significant bearing on the world lore?
If there's such a giant fantasy world ready to explore outside the bounds of Summoner's Rift The Map™, then I'd expect the game to have more than one fucking map, for one thing. This is what I mean when I talk about how the lore influences gameplay.

Did you notice how the Epic store popped up overnight, being launched seemingly weeks after being revealed? It didn't have many games, either. It's almost like Tencent knew that Fortnite's numbers are slipping and wanted to make a move for the entire gaming market while Epic was still a big name.
"a bit more money" is an understatement. Valve is worth around 4 billion. Tencent is worth 522 billion. That, of course, includes all of Tencent but do not underestimate these companies. Xbox has never made a fucking cent of profit for Kikerosoft, even when it was successful like the 360 was. If Tencent sees long-term profit, they will dump billions into it. There are already exclusive indies coming to it, and you'll probably see AAs and then AAAs later on. Whether they'll succeed or not, fuck knows, but they're going to push for it.
Worst case, Steam will be banned from China entirely for hosting "unacceptable" content. Tencent's one of the companies offering the social scoring system for bugmen, they can certainly push the government to do it.

From a business perspective grinding shit for free is a good idea. It keeps a large playerbase in your game for your whales to lord over. For most whales, there's no point in being a whale when there exists only other whales in game. Not to mention you already have to buy the game (but it comes with card packs, goy, why don't you appreciate your valuable purchase?). Time is equal to money in a very real sense. Valve shouldn't be bothered by "plebs" who don't pay for microtransactions but continue to play the game, because those people fill out their game's population, which makes the game more marketable when it's multiplayer only.

Expanding on this, Artifact does not need to be free to play. I say this because Artifact is a extremely complex game with a very high skill ceiling and a steep learning curve.
Good players from Gwent/MTGA, for the brief time they spent with it, didn't even manage to scratch the surface on how to optimize any of the aspects of it (and there is a lot of shit to consider).
It is a very niche product by design, it is the DotA to Hearthstone's LoL. Considering how niche it is, going free to play will not be enough to retain players (or attract a lot of new ones, as expansions increase the game's complexity and learning curve). Much like Dota 2 is a pretty stagnant game for years now since it is so hard to get into compared to Overcuck and LoL.

That's what I mean. You have to reward the "poorfag" simply because he put 10 hours into your shitty game or they won't play. When people see that the only way to get more cards is to put up real money either directly or through a wager, then you're going to damn yourself to a niche audience.
>haven't played r6, but it isn't just a choice between long-ass grind or single purchase with the rest being cosmetics?
Nope, it's worse. You have a cheap purchase, which includes a long ass grind to get all the operators. Or you have a normal price purchase, which gives you enough points for a couple ops and then you have to grind the rest, but the grind is faster. Technically all ops are buyable with game currency, but the newer ones are prohibitively expensive to the point where you have to play about 100 matches to afford one to encourage microtransactions.

Is it really though? Because I've had fun playing it. there's a lot of little nuances to the turn order and sequencing of plays that make games actually swing back and forth in who's favored to win.
Also the game has crashed once and I was able to reconnect to that match.

I agree with the niche thing, but valve doesn't really need to make big bucks with artifact to stroke some shareholder's nose, if there are enough engaged players (which should be considering they already put money on the table) it should be fine on it's own.
just the whole notion of "we want to get dicked via f2p else the game is shit" is bizarre.

They would get more money due to the sunk cost fallacy if a person who plays the game for free for 20 hours thinks "I should buy packs since I've spent so much time on this game" and whales will pay more since they have a constant stream of shitters to lord their perfectly meta decks over. Which surprises me people defend Valve's abhorent management of Dota2.
People play Dota2 because of the Dota IP and updated graphics.
All of Valve's input into the game has done nothing but drive core players away from the game and retain shit tier addicts, cheaters, and trolls.
On top of that, constant rebalancing means people who don't actively play the game can't understand the tourneys beyond watching chaotic fights. Imagine if everytime you tuned in to watch UFC or Football, the rules were radically different. There are other ways to randomize the game (gee valve, have you thought about random character bans?)
The report system? Trash. Always been trash, always will be trash. The PhDs who pushed it should be black balled from the industry. Absolute deplorable use of statistics to try and prove their worth. Criminal. Not to mention stealth trolling can't be stopped with reports.
Matchmaking? Trash. To this day they still haven't a system to handle players returning from a hiatus. Take a six month break and you still come in with your former rank but can't play at that skill level, dooming your team.
Script and macro use went unchecked and probably still is.
All the side shit in the game is nothing but a distraction. Why would you add that trash in?
Cosmetics? Great, now I can't tell who the hell I'm fighting.

>The covenant misinterpreted the halo rings as being a path to godhood
>When the leader race learned about humanity's connection to the forerunners they lied and said humans need to be genocided (to preserve their power)
Its nice to see alien invasion stories that go beyond EXTERMINATE ALL LIFE or ACQUIRE ALL RESOURCES. The other nice thing about the writing is that the dialogue is really quotable like "I AM A MONUMENT TO ALL YOUR SINS". It's not shakespeare but it's memorable and consistent.

The cosmetics were the dealbreaker for me, I played the game a ton from back when it was invite only and didn't have cosmetics. I didn't mind them at first but now every single hero other than mine in every game I play has at least two huge obnoxious items that glow with some color that isn't even a part of the hero's scheme. I can deal with it in normal fights but it's too much in teamfights which is otherwise the most fun part of the game. I can't believe that these are the same devs that made Silencer purple so he didn't look like Dragon Knight.

Arguable. An imitated silhouette of another hero than what the hero actually can be created, and while a player might be told what hero they will be playing against before the match begins, there's the chance that the hero imitated is also on the team. Players should realize who is actually who when facing an enemy but not immediately - I'd say a fair estimate of how long it takes for realization to take place is around one quarter of 1 fifths of a second to maybe even half a second for less adept/perceptive players. That quarter/fifth of a second means a lot in a game like Dota where split second decisions can make or break a team fight. I can name several situations (out of an innumerable amount) where confusing an enemy will really fuck up a teamfight but I'm hoping you'll understand my point without need for an example.

>complaining that 343i Halo requires reading books to understand lore/who characters are
Makes sense, the goal of a single player campaign should be to tell a story and you shouldn't need auxiliary material to know what the fuck is going on.
>complaining that Dota 2 doesn't have lore
Absolutely retarded, and in essence is on par with complaining that Halo's multiplayer doesn't have lore.
The focus of a PVP environment shouldn't be to delve into some coherent consistent narrative, because by nature none of it holds up to sense. No one played Halo MP and thought "Gee, if only there was some fucking inane explanation as to why two colors of Spartan (and later Elites) are shooting the shit out of each other and respawning on a variety of maps that take them across the galaxy?"
I mean, Red vs Blue did it for comedy, and 343i did a hackney'd "muh simulations, muh wacky spaceball sport" bit which is ultimately just as much of a joke.
Yes lore influences gameplay, which means that it can also just as easily limit it.
If you want to stick to ASSFAGGOTS, League of Legends is a perfect example. It bent over ass backwards writing a story where it would make sense for all these assorted champions to share their minds with a summoner and kill each other for political gain, financial gain, or just as slaves. Not only was the premise goofy as fuck if you looked at it too hard, it also literally restricted everything that happened in the world at large to Summoner's Rift. No new conflict, no new threat, no new stories without being dragged kicking and screaming into that arena and getting resolved by blowing up some crystals. When they got rid of it, they opened up the opportunity to make an absolute fuckload of auxiliary lore.
They took your suggestion, and made a map called Dominion based on a lore event. No one played it and it died.
Then they made an ARAM map which does feature some lore, but it isn't really why people play it, they did it on SR before anyway.
The idea that Dota 2 devs are going to make 10 minute little single player stories for each of their fucking 100+ and expanding heroes - which will ultimately be just as ignored in the same way you ignored their bios - is retarded and equally meaningless.
tl;dr: Auxiliary lore material is perfect for PVP multiplayer based games, efforts to incorporate lore into the game itself are often flawed or meaningless flavor because it can't impact the PVP environment

I glanced over a couple of minutes of Artifact gameplay and thought that it at least looked like an original concept for card game gameplay. Boy, does it seem that I was wrong on that regard. Either that, or originality isn't nearly enough to make it not utter trash.

I can confirm, you can have decks that have literally no options against certain decks, but fuck up against others.
In small terms, I'll use four archtypes as an example.
Blue Eyes, Timelord (With Archlord and Darklords), Darkest Lair and Dracowarriors.
Blue Eyes relies on card combos, mostly Spell and Monster combos to get anything out, and has mundane, but consistant effects and overpowering monsters.
Timelords rely on summoning single monsters with powerful effects, but have no stats but as Fairy/Angel types have loads of drawing and deck support.
Darkest Lair is a series of Dragon/Fiend cards that focus on depriving the hand of cards en-mass using Virus cards, which require Dark monsters with specific stats, and Darkest Lair allows you to use Tribute effects on the other field, which is almost entirely indefensible and no card can counter that.
Blue Eyes beats Darkest Lair because Blue Eyes can get monsters on the field quickly and shut down the backrow spells and traps with removal cards.
Timelords beat Blue Eyes because their easiest monster to summon, Metaion, clears the field of monsters and being all about spells that have single use effects, Blue Eyes has practically no counter.
Darkest Lair beats Timelords because Timelords rely on hand advantage, keeping lots of cards on hand, to keep options open so they can bring out the right Timelord. Timelords can only be summoned one at a time under normal conditions, so a Tribute effect comepletely shuts down a Timelord's defense by outright removing it from the field, into the Graveyard, which is the worst place for it to be since it shuffles into the deck.
Then we have Dracowarriors, which are super consistent, have monsters that under the right conditions are practically instant wins against any deck, and have had several bans.
Guess which one's the most expensive?
On top of that, we have the Ghost Loli cards, which are traps that you can activate from the hand that shut down whatever the meta is at the time before your opponent can even get started, you can literally win the game with an Ash Blossom. Which also ends up costing a shit-ton and never
EVER
gets a hit on the official banlists despite being unthemed monsters that have no reason to exist.
One of the new Ghost Lolis that's going to be released explicitly counters mass summoning, by increasing your Life Points by the Attack points of the Effect monsters summoned, which means a shit ton of life points should someone start playing solitaire, which is broken as fucking hell since the entire game is based around massive combos.

The cheek of valve thinking they could just create this whole economy in a totally inorganic way is worse than Diablo 3's auction house. I can imagine Gabe and a bunch of "data scientists" autistically calculating all the money they would make and coming up with bullshit to justify it as "a good thing".
Also all the people discussing balance and patches to death like it matters when 99.999% of players will be turned away by basic UI, camera, and gameplay design errors. I enjoy the blindness and arrogance of the developers and the shills. Sure, some real players get over those problems and they do have legit complaints about deeper gameplay, but it's all so hilariously irrelevant. Did you know the mac version doesn't even start since the patch? It just crashes for 100% of users 100% of the time. But this card is overpowered? Oh my god, who cares? The game is on life support and fading fast.

Artifact is everything Valve SHOULD NOT BE INVOLVED IN
*A card game - so naturally exploits its players hand, infact exploitation is requirements with real playing cards, something Valve thought they could use with virtual cards which makes zero sense
*Tiny production - theres no reason why Valve is making making indie games when its AAA company, most other publishers HIRE OTHER STUDIOS to do this
*Outsourced majority of work to contractors inside the company - what the fuck have all the others devs doing for A FUCKING DECADE?
*Monetization is the main drive - this isnt why should make games, infact its sad Valve cant tell difference between good game that makes enough money, and one that sell hats
*Cashing in on trends instead of innovating - what the fuck is Valve doing, they used to make great games with great firsts, Half-Life was one of the first major successful games with coherent structure and worldbuilding instead of being collection of levels
its sad to see what Valve has become after all these years, i never thought they could fall so far

Over time they lose the ability to produce anything. Years of diversity hires and not caring about programming talent drives away anyone good while encouraging more and more useless people to join. Layers of management all with no actual skills contribute to this decline too. Programming has always been the central core of everything but those types don't respect it. Obviously no ideas, gameplay, graphics, sound, music, etc, are worth anything without that all important foundation.
No one there can actually do anything worthwhile let alone code so instead they focus on drama, SJW shit, power, being jealous, undermining their rivals, etc. No time to make games with all that going on. Too busy trying to get promoted through personal relationships.
People who don't play games or have any skills aren't going to suddenly come up with good ideas. Instead you get impractical unwanted shit like VR and broken garbage like Artifucked. Anyone with any serious experience at all would have immediately spotted all the UI and camera problems for example but Valve were only ever interested in the opinions of a selected group of paid shills / yes men who were incentivised to not tell the truth.

I've seen this mentioned several times in this thread, but how are those even possible in a card game of all things? I've seen some footage of the game, and it looks like it's possible to see the cards and click on them, so how can a game with such a simple premise have problems with that?

Is it just me or (as a non player), was artifact actually a lot less greedy than most of the other trading card games currently available? The most greedy thing they did, in my opinion, was make it impossible to trade cards with friends without using the market place. But lets not ignore than there aren't many online trading card games out there that allow you to directly buy the cards you actually want. I don't doubt that people generally spend a lot more buying pack after pack to have a chance to get the right cards. And sure, playing for free gives some cards for free too, but thats really mainly there to keep you addicted to the game. I think artifact is kinda like the internet as a whole. It is probably a less greedy game with less dirty tricks up its sleeve to try and get your money without you noticing. But all the other games like it, will give you the game for free, but that use tricks to keep you addicted and spend more money on it in the long run. Compare this to, for example, news sites these days. There are some paid ones, which few people use, but they generally are actually good quality. And there are loads and loads of free ones, using dirty advertising tricks, like making ads look like actual articles. For the higher quality ones, you really know the cost you pay, for the shit ones, its all disguised. Look at hearth stone for example, those that pay more will have better decks, if you pay nothing, you are still valuable for blizzard because you will be playing with worse decks making their paying customers feel better about themselves and spend more. The cost you pay is in the time you spend.
Now, with all that in mind, I feel like Valve will easily be able to make Artifact popular again, they have budget and time on their side. Even if it takes a few years to become a success, its not like they will go under just because it failed at the start.

Of course that isn't a good trade.
We give valve plenty of shit, and deservedly so, but they certainly still do a few things right as well.
Some of the things that Valve currently does very well compared to most other platforms:
-Developers can generate keys to sell on their own.
-The review system is pretty transparent (see reviews that didn't buy through steam, see dev replies, …).
-Mods are easy to get.
-Their own DRM is not too bad (I am of the strange opinion that its not DRM ruining everything, its the copyright itself ruining everything).
-They release a lot back into the community and they try to tie a lot less to their own platform than most others would. For example their VR technology is open, their Steam play on linux technology is open source and they contribute back into the wine development regularly.
-They single handedly are making linux gaming a thing. Examples are Vulkan, Proton/wine, many further development tools for linux.
-Their controller support is also beyond good.
Even in things that aren't as well liked by /v/, they are so much better than most other companies out there. For example E-sport. Just look at Dota 2 vs LoL or any of blizzards games. The tournaments are a lot more relaxed. So much more is allowed. Especially at the top tournament, The international. I have no doubt that half the people playing there would have gotten fines and what not for their behavior if they did the same shit in any other tournament. Even more, all other E-sports are moving into franchise territory, this is simply because the developer wants to take more control. Valve doesn't do any of that. Wasn't there a lol team getting a penalty because they "disrespected the opponent" by taking heroes that are not considered in meta? Dota 2 has things like techies being picked, tipping, spamming voice lines and so on.
They aren't the great guys they once were, releasing quality games more often, not having "paid mods" scandals (although, lets face it, this was as much Bethesda pushing it as it was Valve, creation club is a thing now, you know).
But in my opinion, they are still far from the worst (even if they did make some of the worst shit popular, like loot boxes). And they probably are one of the last big defenses against the absolute worst of the worst taking over. Like EA, like Tencent.

One example is the camera being "torn away" from the player unexpectedly. People tend to independently repeat that phrase because that's how it feels. It's one of the worst UI sins in games and completely unnecessary. In a desktop program rather than game the equivalent would be focus stealing or something moving around under your mouse pointer when you were about to click it. Players who stream the game get used to the issues so they know to wait for the right moments rather than try to battle the UI. Of course no one should have to battle a UI in the first place.
>>16021891
It is one of the reasons, true. However don't forget that some people did buy the game and then abandoned it in large proportions. The same was true of Lawbreakers.
>>16022035
Aside from being a bad game that people tried then abandoned, and people already being hostile to Cliffy B and his anti-white racism, it also had no nice characters to grab people. They were all very, very ugly. Those "read out wikipedia and news articles" youtubers never mention the ugly characters or the anti-white racism, so it's a good indication they were primary reasons. The official youtube-safe narrative almost always avoids the truth.
Artifact shares a lot here except the characters are just boring and the hostility comes from the let down of it being a card game rather than any anti-white racism / SJW shit, as far as I can see.

TF2, a game that came out TWELVE YEARS AGO, currently has 57,391 players.
Artifact's all-time peak was 60,740. There are 1,483 people playing it at the moment.
Even at the height of popularity, it was pulling it the same playerbase TF2 gets everyday.

Every other sane person wants literally the opposite: for them to stay the fuck away from everything we used to love. Ever since the 4th of July, 2008 (newfags won't even remember Palermo Update) Valve has been nothing but a retarded child of your mom's friend, that she decided to bring with her while visiting your house, and your mom keeps pestering you about letting it play your video games with its greasy fat hands.

Anon, they brought on Richard Garfield. To make a card game. That could not have been fucking cheap, considering Magic the Gathering is still going strong.
Put it this way. Valve released "Dota Plus" (a paid service with an AI that analyzed stats to help new players) about a year ago for Dota 2 and didn't touch it at all. For a whole goddamn year the system was the same, with no new rewards, despite people paying for it. Then, magically, about a month after the writing was on the wall for Artifact, Dota 2 gets a huge update and with it Dota Plus. To me that says Valve realized their mistake and is back to milking the Dota playerbase back on actual Dota instead of a spinoff.

Even though artifact failed to become popular they still made their money off of it because of the no refunds policy on the starter packs. Now they get to ride the card game player base anyways because of a random warcraft 3 custom game clone in the Dota 2 client becoming popular. Dota Auto Chess has 50k players right now and I'm sure they already know how they are going to monetize it. The stars fucking aligned and there is no justice in the world.

Personally I got my refund after opening the packs, as did a few friends of mine. Granted, this was on day 2 of the game being out, and I did not think I was going to get a refund because I read the same thing. I got it though, and I'm betting it's because they got so many fucking refund requests that they just approved all of them

All the autists who want that kind of experience play MTG anyway. There's definitely a market for people who want a more complex game than Hearthstone/Shadowverse but haven't the money to play MTG - however, they all play MTG Arena now, or Force of Will via untap.in, or something else. I think the player bases have settled into their respective games, and another game trying to force its way onto the market was doomed from the start.

wasnt it announced originally around the time of gwent / heartstone release but only just came out now? i remember the prominent booing and anger of the dota crowd, which honestly should of tipped off valve that their respective audience really didnt give a shit about card games
I think that they just didn't want to pass up a opportunity to work with Richard Garfield on trying to make competition, but like you said, why switch from MtG (which has a online alternative as well) to Artifact, when you already have MtG? When you have one bowl of chocolate ice cream, do you really want another of the same flavor and experience? probably a shit analogy but i hope what i'm trying to express is coming off correctly

>When you have one bowl of chocolate ice cream, do you really want another of the same flavor and experience?
some people like vanilla or strawberry, magic isn't really the end-all of cardgames. my impression from artifact is simply people getting butthurt about a mandatory buy-in and how you get cards.

On the topic of gay shills getting what they deserve, I have to admit that I get a lot of pleasure out of seeing teamliquid completely abandon their artifact website. They were one of the "big" promoters of artifact, although "big" doesn't mean much because despite TL having teams in a lot of other established esports, their website is practically dead. Fuck them though, after the release of SC2, all the new writers on their staff basically shoved all the brood war fans and players out the door and gave them the finger. TL is largely to blame for the cancer that is "hurr esports esports esports don't you fucking LOVE esports? everything should be an esport!"
Now SC2 is dying and brood war is making a resurgence in worst korea, but TL is still a dead website trying hard to grasp at any attempt at relevancy in other "up and coming esports". For years they proudly flaunted their userbase, splaying a "we've had 10,000 active users in the last hour!" That time is long gone and I bet they have maybe a few hundred at most now.
