Knew it was going to be bad once news came out after the announcement at e3 that they didn't even start on it yet, they wanted it to be Grand Theft Auto in space, and they wanted you to make the content for the game. Online only is just icing on the cake at this point. I did watch that recent stream and I thought the scaling back from your third person controlled character is a little too far. It made you look tiny compared to the wide area you can see. That was probably for demonstration purposes but it made the visual around you look very empty. I guess it has to do with how you can easily scale from the planet all the way to space seamlessly. It's a long way from completion so a lot of stuff can be ironed-out but I don't think it'll be the beyond Good & Evil the original fans were hoping for.

You're not their customers. Their customers, aren't their customers. Their shareholders, they are their investors, and they don't know fuck-all about videogames. They just know money, and know they want more of it. Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a well regarded IP that they can slap lootboxes or microtransactions onto - and no matter how badly the game does, the risk of it failing is far less than if they just tried to make a single-player game and it bombed. These companies lose their asses hard enough when a major release is wildly successful - but doesn't manage to meet sales expectations. Investors get spooked and start to jump ship. Imagine what would happen if they created and released a game that had no whale bait - so whatever it made in direct sales, was all it was ever going to make, and it flopped?
And even beyond that… even if the game was a success and met it's sales expectations - the naggling question of, "how much more could we have made if it were online multiplayer with cash-shop mechanics" would still make the entire endeavor a huge waste of time since that's time and resources they COULD have used making an online multiplayer game with cash-shop mechanics.
