In S.T.A.L.K.E.R. tabletop RPG (more true to the source Roadside Picnic yhan the vidya version), there are six zones and one of them is set in Japan, specifically Hokkaido. That place is a nightmare to get through to (you need a boat to get in) and one of the most dangerous zones to go in. IIRC Imagine a brain scorcher, but instead of radio wave it is light and if you can see it you better scarper because if you get hit by it and then poof you are gone. Some say to other dimension, some hell, some just plain dead. The biggest draw of that zone is a huge ass otherworldly monolith in the middle.

True that. The TRPG is entirely something else and it would be very difficult to make a vidya out of it. The TRPG version is more dangerous than the vidya. In vidya, stalkers live in the zone but in the TRPG they make trips into the zone because staying there or near there for too long WILL cosmically fuck you up in a million ways. The mutants are much stronger and scarier e.g. a spider swarm made out of metal and bullets do jack shit against them, a pus-filled blind rabbit and its screeches blows you brains off. The most dangerous shit being the 'silver web', a metaphysical anomaly that looks like its name, which if anyone touches, they will die within 24 hours. The catch is, it cannot be perceived by any means; but it can only be seen by those whom the Zones have chosen.
I like both tbh.

That is what exactly how it is in Roadside Picnic and TRPG version of it. UN creates a new branch dedicated to locking down the zones tight. The usual order is kill on sight, but the catch is only thing the guards can actually kill are stalkers. The area which mutants, anomalies, inorganisms, quasi-chemicals, and whatnots roam are usually devoid of guards because the guards are all dead. So in practice the fences are actually 1-2 km away from the actual zone in case anything but stalker makes their way through, the guards can get a running start and alert others in time.

(Possibly co-op with progression?) Atmospheric esoteric survival (as in supplies, rations, scavenge, etc.) horror roleplaying game?
Combat-wise. Packing heat and heavy clothing is still necessary. Gunfire in the dead silent Zone draws attention like nothing else, but when you are caught pants down with a Pox Bear mutant (exactly what it is) then you would rather blow a mag or two into it and then run to the nearest exit. For others, while you cannot kill them through conventional means, a resourceful (and often come back alive) stalker uses his wits and turn the zones nature against its denizens or outwit it. The deadly catch is: they (quasi-chemicals and inorganisms aka. things that are not alive, but act like they are) possess AT LEAST human level of intelligence (know to take cover from gunfire from second encounter onwards, lay traps, set ambush by night, separate the party etc.)
A trip into the zone requires proper provisioner in the team because scavenging there is impossible, unlike vidya version where you can shoot bandits and expect some loots or food. Packing proper rations and planning proper trip routes are necessary. And someone need to guard the supplies because damn moon rabbits (aka. blow your brain off screech when spooked) will rip that pack a new one and make out with your supplies. Your asses are grass if party run out of water.
Role-playing wise. In the TRPG book, there are no classes (skill system), but the most stalkers gather in party (only top veteran stalkers can solo) and have their roles. In the book, they said this informal system is formed by Russian stalkers and spreaded worldwide. The roles are as follow (one person can take on more than one role):
- Monkey: Team acrobat/parkour. Go up those hard to reach places, drop the ropes for the team, etc.
- Muscle: Carry big guns, keep watch, make sure nothing sneak up on the team. Bodyguard duty during negotiations.
- Doc: Patch up people real fast; because scent of blood draws things in real fast, and bleeding often turn into grave injury in the Zone
- Scout: Pathfinders par excellence. Find ways to sneak past UN guards, check out routes, etc.
- Professor: Knowledgeable guy, knows the Zone anomaly and denizens and their signs in and out. Also handle artifacts (unlike vidya, artefacts do dangerous shits other than radiation) carefully and make sure party do not burn themselves using artifacts.
- Driver: Also doubles as mechanics, fixer, crafter. Yes, the zones are 80+ km diameter huge unlike vidya version. You need vehicles to get around.
- Cook: Provisioner. Cook a good meal so party can stay in good mood, keep watch on supplies.
- Boss: Leader. Plan the trip, gather information, find clients who will pay for artefacts found, make connections, negotiate deals, call the shots and tactics.

Would make those artifacts containers in some Stalker mods more interesting.
Too bad in vidya the closest would be featuring main classes with sub-classes for each. Driver would be a fast-travel + craft station + extraction and scout would serve to buy info were to travel + levels of threat on the surroundings.
Would imagine that how deep you can reach into the center of each Zone would be determinate by how your character progression, gear, connections and other NPCs can explore.

i think a large reason it got such a cult following was because of how buggy it was. even years after all that shits been patched out, people still use clips of such bugs for memevids and whatnot. endless videos of AI bugs doing ridiculous shit.
given that the studio was out of the picture since years ago, these fan vids/memes and especially the mods which lead to moar bugs is what kept the series alive. funny thing is, when the AI wasnt wigging out, it was hands down one of the best enemy AI scripts around by far, and especially so at the time of release

the problem is that while fukushima was quite catastrophic, and the radiation is still quite prevalent due to how recent it was, nothing ever again due to how the reactors are built post chernobyl will be quite as much of a mess as chernobyl. those graphite fires were spewing cesium 137 and loads of other extremely hot shit all over eastern/northern europe, and to a lesser extent, western europe as well.

I had SoC sitting on my computer for years and never got around to it. What mods would an experienced stalker recommend?

hit_probability is not a meme, you're just in denial. It's not 100% bad though as you can tweak it, and I think ZRP has a tweak for it as well.

I agree, the AI being almost completely unpredictable coupled with the spawn system makes the games stand out from anything else I have ever played.
You can get surprised by the games no matter how much you play, especially the mods. It really makes the world seem alive and immersive, as nobody waits for the player to do everything. Stalkers will look for artefacts indefinitely or until bandits/mutants/anomalies get them. It is an own world entirely.

Just have it in the rural areas and limit the urban areas as much as popular and say there are mega radioactive gay homo retards there (in rl it is all true except for the radioactive part)
