If you miss that feeling than you should seek it out organically. People can tell you good places to look but if you put yourself out there you can stumble upon this feeling often.
Especially if you leave a screen out of it.

I wish I could get the same sense of wonder I had at the original 3D zeldas. I've tried to keep the sense of the "grand mystery" alive in my life, and so do look at things with some small measure of wonder - things like trees, birds, people, relationships, etc. but it's not the same as discovering what may as well have been a window into another dimension and the stories that took place there. I know it's been said a trillion times before, but OoT was special to me in its own way, just like it was special to lots of people in their own ways. No, it may not have been the best game ever, or even a good game at all, but it was a wonderful game, in the literal sense, for me.

May come off sounding like some old timer but I really think restricted visibility is needed for a world to pull you in because it leaves gaps your mind has to fill in by solving patterns which teaches it to be invested in the world.
Nowadays every insignificant detail is accounted for in 4k so your brain just sits there and "experiences" a stream of information it never has to engage with while receiving timed dopamine hits. It's like watching tv!

I think a great amount of it came from seeing a 3D world with that level of detail and immersion. I feel similarly to Super Mario 64. The interactivity is what makes it amazing, not just the gameplay. Most people missed out and only got that exposure when GTA III came out. It was the interactivity, not the crime gameplay, that made it big. Of course, the dumbass trendchasers didn't get it and just superficially copied it like Jak & Daxter.

There is a definite sense of both having to work within the confines of what a system is capable of, while knowing when to not go too overboard on detail between budget/slowdown, for older generations, and I'd say up through sixth gen games could be pretty good about that, hopefully showing what they were capable of doing, but also knowing how to leave things to the player to imagine, whether from a closer angle, or from perhaps a different perspective, to insert themselves into how they'd think the world might look. The push towards realism, and the notion where for publishers (and probably most people buying games) considering outright visual quality to be better to push than visual style, has caused some real loss to it.
>Granstream Saga
I seem to recall that one getting a fair amount of shit when it was current for not managing to render faces on the actual models or something. I suppose that could also be considered part of the "insert your own vision" thing, but at the same time I kind of doubt that was the intent, especially since it seems like it has character portraits even if the models didn't.

> I really think restricted visibility is needed for a world to pull you in
I was amazed by the world that I could see, and that was enough for me, so this is apparently not always the case. TV is not a portal to another world, it's a portal to this world. in OoT, I could go swim in a lake that existed nowhere on planet earth. That wasn't a constant stream of dopamine hits - I could stand on the edge of the lake and watch the sun set, then run over to the island and watch the sun rise from the top of the dead tree.
Though you have a point about 4k and hyper-realism - it feels bland and processes quickly because it is ultimately created by people, not by nature, which is much more complex. The lack of detail did do us certain favors in the older games, but I don't think "lack of visibility" is the right way to describe it - lack of specificity would be better. It's like how when you lie, you are very very specific about everything to make it seem more believable. Here, you are only speaking of graphics, which I think is a limited scope to begin with, but for example, Dark Souls 3, which I'm playing now for the first time, is extremely detailed graphically. However, because of both it's writing and it's lack of writing, it's music and it's lack of music, it's detail in some places and therefore it's lack of detail in some places - used tastefully - make it an extremely compelling game for many people. What is the deepest lore? The lore that we never know. and crab memes
>>15880201
> The interactivity is what makes it amazing, not just the gameplay
This. There was a sensitivity that developers had at the time that is missing from most games today. Whether it was because the stakes were higher, or maybe because there was less pressure surrounding development teams than there are today, or even just an overall cultural thing like Japanese fashion is - simple and advanced at the same time - it made for really interesting experiences. I never found games that tried to focus on an imitation of the real world very compelling. San Andreas for example was great, but i never found myself wanting to explore those places - maybe because I was playing the game as a character who was very worldly, being a criminal gorilla and all.

Also while I'm at it, that long standing "it looks like a PS2 game!" complaint that used to be brought up a good bit in seventh gen never really struck me as a negative since I consider there to be a good amount of PS2 games with a nice visual style to them. Unless one is only considering outright graphical prowess (of which the PS2 was somewhat reduced compared to the Gamecube and Xbox) as the sole thing to look at, but it still just comes off as graphicsfag bitching about not meeting current visual standards. While obviously still trying to do as best as one can on both fronts is most preferable, I'd rather a game with subpar graphical prowess but an enjoyable visual style, than one that pushes the graphical limit but doesn't even try to stand out stylistically.

Yeah lack of specificity is closer to what I should have said and OoT delivers that. I was referring to the distant or fine details of a game's environment only being implied or possible rather than fully rendered due to technical limitations which creates a mystery you brain wants to solve, which I think accounts for the feeling of wonder. Technical limitations seem to be key as modern deliberate stylization doesn't have the same effect and only low budget games like hat in time give a drop of it. Contrast that with Mass Effect 2 where the AI has to tell you verbatim, "Warning, vista pleasing to organic life forms detected".

What do you guys think of the atmosphere in ME1? The planet environments were all single-texture with peaks but I felt it added to the sense of isolation and forboding to it. I loved turning the bgm off for that reason. And you're allowed to go pretty much everywhere which triggers my inner explorer.
Tbh for all this talk of realism nowadays if you were to land on any random spot on any rocky planet in the galaxy 99,999,999/100,000,000 you're going to find yourself in the middle of a barren desert of uninteresting rocks and rock formations.
In contrast later games like ME2, ME3 started to limit your "exploration" to confined spaces that mimic the most stimulating but rarest natural environments. This is very unengaging because it's always right there, there's nothing to trigger this kind of anticipation anymore.
