Video games are also cropping up as a citation on divorce petitions; around 200 divorce petitions this year cited Fortnite and other games as the reason for a marriage breakdown. Psychiatrist Paul Weigle, who says he has about 20 compulsive Fortnite players he’s seeing, thinks gaming addiction is “going to be more of a problem than it is now” as games become more sophisticated.
This news comes after the World Health Organization classified “gaming disorder” as a mental health condition back in June, sparking controversy and discussions about the issue among both the gaming and scientific communities; some scientists dismissed the classification, citing a lack of compelling evidence. It’s also worth keeping in mind the ongoing controversy surrounding loot boxes in gaming, which recently saw the FTC promise to launch an investigation on the basis that loot boxes constituted gambling. Some have warned that the payment systems in games like Fortnite are “predatory”, and could lead to children becoming addicted to gambling. This isn’t likely to be the last we hear on this issue, so we’ll keep you posted.

Played soccer (during breaks and also for out school), our team over the years did very well and I loved it even wins and losses. Signed up for cricket, both school teams lost every game and I found it long and boring unless you were batting nor did it help that some people quit the team making it even worse. Signed up for fencing because I always wanted to try it, not the best at it but still enjoyed it and only stopped because the coach moved to another city.

A strong point, accessibility ended up being fortnites greatest strength. I've said it before when the topic of the game comes up though I am always surprised its popular with casuals, my roommate and our mutual friend will play duos of it pretty often and I'll watch a bit, nothing about it seems that fun, I would rather play something like COD based off what I've watched

I think I know, it's a weird combination.
For one it's free, which means anyone with a computer or whatever the fuck it's on is able to get it.
Then it's colorful, cartoony, and pretty bland graphics means most people won't exactly get excited when they see it, but they don't be turned off by it. No parent is going to see a screenshot of it and think it's not good for their kid since it's a colorful bright game.
Emotes are literally emojis, nothing else needs to be said about them
The gameplay is basic and bare, which again means it has a wide audience. Even more with kids since it's a shooter and kids love those, but now manchildren get into it because they can think it's an in depth game due to artificial depth ala weapon stats and building when in reality it's a game that is basically just hide and seek. Which again, is a nice simple concept so even the retarded kids can figure it out and potentially win with enough luck, meaning they'll become fans and get that sweet dopamine rush from winning.
Then it appeals to pop culture and references, something sonic did too, so the same audience will be drawn to it.
And of course character customization, literally sonic OCs.
No story means no investment, be whatever you want.
And lastly: Streamers. Streamers are a cancer on their own but they're a multiplier, especially in a free game. Since they are basically celebrities now, kids will play these games hoping to be in a stream and for no other reason. Streamers even help to ramp up the illusion of gameplay with their reactions and commentary, it's crazy.

The number of kids that play Fortnite all fucking day JUST to get a chance to end up in a random duo with one of however many streamers are streaming has to be pretty high.
