Are there any shitty games you found that turned out to be surprisingly good? Have you ever been surprised by trying out a really bad looking game and then realizing that it's supririsngly not that bad and actually kind of fun? I think I would say that some Fast Food-brand games count but looking at how good they can often be, that feels almost like an insult to Fast Food-brand games.

I'd go with the trilogy of The Legend of Dark Witch on 3DS. Games look cheap, are quite cheap (especially if your 3DS is pirated), yet are solid as hell, being basically Mega Man with Gradius' options tackled in.
The first two games are on Steam too, for those interested, but the third is exclusive to 3DS thus far.

Ninja Kids is an arcade beatemup that looks like absolute ass, especially considering when it came out, but plays well enough and has probably the most ridiculous premise for a game ever. It even has 4 player which is criminal rare for the genre.

I concur, these games are really fun.
One game that comes to my mind is Ika-Chan, it's on the 3DS eshop but I'm not sure if it's elsewhere. It's a fun little game, though it's quite easy. It's a relaxing game overall.
In a similar vein is Sparkle 2 EVO. I think it's mobileshit but I found it on the Switch eshop for 50 cents and it's another relaxing game that I enjoy. I like the visuals too.

i actually really like hidden item games, which are almost always 5 dollar filler games at best buy. What'd be nice is a hidden item game with a good plot, like it's the post apocalypse and you're hunting for salvage in the ruins of society and during your searches you find a android woman that leads you on a quest to find riches since the factory that made such a convincing humanoid would probably be loaded with good loot. Add some story progression, optional levels, and multiple endings and don't include any hint like a pussy, and it'd be pretty cool.

Rhythm games are a niche. I'd actually say as simple as Crypt of the Necrodancer is, the whole thing is really ambitious, trying to bring a niche like Rhythm to an end. Sure, there are games like that, like Rhythm Heaven, but Rhythm on itself is so barely done that I really doubt it's "Shovelware".

You might think a licensed sports game would be forgettable trash, but MLB Power Pros was awesome. The simulation career mode even lets you get with a waifu and boost your baseball stats. I always go back to this game every year just to play a new run. It also helps that the gameplay is solid, if a bit simple. Reminds me of Ken Griffey's baseball on the Genesis.
I really wish they brought these back over to the West.

FF8fag here. Had this game as a kid on PC. Played and beat it, did everything except kill Omega Weapon. I genuinely enjoyed the game, but after a decade and a half of time to reflect, I'm here to tell you why this is objectively wrong.
First off, and possibly the most obvious, this game is not fucking shovelware. This was a relatively well-done PC port of a large-scale game that took lots of time and money to make. This is possibly the furthest thing from shovelware in this entire thread, in fact.
Second, as somebody who enjoyed this game and played it in full, I can tell you that this game is middling on the best of days and just plain bad on the worst. The story is weird cyclical bullshit that feeds on itself involving child mercenaries, rampaging sorceress cunts, and minuscule details that are incredibly easy to miss over. The combat is annoyingly plain, the enemies level up with you which was never explained, the junction and draw system was nothing short of absolute trash, and everything gets explained away with deus ex machina.
Also, the characters are mostly a bunch of whiny, annoying faggots. Squall was a whiny cunt most of the game until he found TRUE LOVE™, Zell was just an ultra-annoying dudebro faggot, I wanted to knock Irvine's teeth in the entire game, Rinoa was the ultimate victim-complex rich-bitch cunt, and Seifer was a whiny child led by the nose into doing everyone's dirty work for them. I felt so bad for Quistis and Selphie the entire time, but not enough to offset my distaste of just about everyone else.
In fact, the only truly redeeming things in this game for me were the Triple Triad card game which unironically had more depth to it than the actual combat, the little wandering chocobo minigame app that came packaged with the PC version and gave you extra items, and Quistis, obviously.
