That 2001 alpha would probably have been great, what Gearbox shat out wasn't awful but it wasn't polished at all. They just took everything laying around in the abandoned 3D Realms offices and taped it together before pushing it out the door.

That game had a lot of variety, but nothing in it is really good. Lots of details that don't really add up to anything. You can buy food, but it doesn't do anything. You can look at the polygons of a bag of crisps you bought. You don't have a hunger stat. Even eating a hamburger from a trashcan in a late 80s brawler to restore health is deeper than that. Weather doesn't affect your movements. You can take care of an animal, and that animal doesn't help you with anything. There was a very brief moment when the game was technically impressive, but there is no artistic vision that ties the parts together.
