No publicity is bad publicity, they're doing this so that more eyes see their product. This is a step in the right direction, I just wish it didn't come from a "this will make us money" point of view. But that's always asking too much from a first party developer.

One can hope that what happened is that the creator's program didn't net them as much money as they hoped and the negative backlash to the controversy which resulted to many big channels avoiding Nintendo coverage altogether and others using means to avoid giving them revenue proved to far outweigh any benefits keeping it in place would bring.

I think they (specifically NoA) want it to be a serious esport. Not only are the Olympics slowly opening up to esports and a Smash Ultimate tournament might be shown on national television via Eleague, there is now a shift going on towards esports-focused games being the big fish of this industry rather than traditional AAA games. Smash being a big esport will help keep their single-player IPs relevant in this new and dark age of gaming. It's not the future that most anons want but we are headed in that direction.
