Last time I tried to play this with /v/ I joined a server where the world was completely flooded. I thought it was cool as shit, and was excited to explore, then some faggot joins and immediately summons…the Halloween boss, I think? I was blamed for it and banned without any discussion. The server should just make everyone build something, and if you don't do that within the hour you get kicked. I think the issue is this:

The people complaining about "rushers" don't care about what the game defines as "progression." They just want a slow, comfy game where they can build up a nice home for themselves and the NPCs, steadily gaining equipment, and occasionally killing a boss when they need to access what it gates. Killing bosses isn't the goal, but a fun event for the server to do when they're personally ready to move things along. On the other hand, from what I gather, you, and probably others, see killing the bosses and progressing through them as the point of the game. It's the thing you believe everyone should be working towards. It's the goal. And thus the two methodologies collide. One faction of players doesn't really care if no progression is made for weeks, because they aren't very concerned with progressing the game, and they'll go do it once they damn well feel like it. Meanwhile, this other faction of players actively wants to progress the world, because they feel that's what they should be doing. Then one gets annoyed at the other as their ways of playing the game conflict with each other.

Minecraft is a shit game with no actual sense of progression, annoying mechanics, and an awful world, that's why. Plus, Terraria provides more to build and decorate with. Terraria has over a dozen furniture sets. Minecraft has no furniture sets. Terrarias different types of wood all have different styles to what they make, and just about everything made out of wood has a different version for each type of wood. Minecraft's wood types only vary by color, and lots of things made of wood don't even have variations based on the type of wood their made form. I could go on.

I actually have to disagree with this one assessment. In Minecraft, due to its 3D nature, you can always walk back and admire what you've made in its entire full scale. You can see your skyscraper extending into the clouds, your moat encircling your castle, your road disappearing into the distance. However, in Terraria, if your construct is big enough, you can never see it in full. You're always limited by the rectangle of area that is your screen. You either have to use a third party tool or stitch together screenshots if you want to see the whole building.

Do people actually make skyscrapers in Terraria? That's seemed like a terrible idea to me ever since I realized wyverns can spawn right above your spawn point after killing the Wall of Flesh.

How early are we talking? Cactus and Boreal wood make good starting equipment so go for those right away, make a bow and sword and armor. Go grab some ice from the snow biome and make frost arrows. Fire/frost arrows are also a decent way to light up caves so you know if an enemy is coming up. Might want to invest more in glowsticks than you normally do, and place ropes in every hurdle so you don't have to do precise platforming to escape.

Think I died a few times just trekking across the Corruption to get to the ocean to fish Reaver Sharks. Other times it's been various deadly encounters in the cavern layer before I had a lot of heart crystals amassed. One was a skeleten throwing its bone at me (75 damage goddamn). The GOG version of Tmodloader is outdated, so you need to instead download the Steam version and hex edit the Terraria.exe included in it, search for "00 0A 0F 00 17", and change the 0x17 to 0x16. This will disable steam initialization and allow you to use it with the GOG version.

This thread gave me the idea to start a new world with a friend. In fact, this is my first "real" world (I did some solo back then but I only killed the first boss). There are so many things to do compared to modded Minecraft. Even dungeons are fun to explore.

I meant to add that probably the best place to best places to build underground would be in an extremely large marble or granite biome since it's completely corruption proof. Granite is probably the best since you don't have to worry about a stray medusa spawning during hardmode.

There, 10 minutes into the game and you're decked in armour that's not made of paper and can actually fight back. Instead of being a massive dickweed and rushing the bosses afterwards, use this armour to spelunk, mine and gather resources and build a good base before hardmode.

The only thing that trully fucking sucks is how many materials are locked behind hardmode, so just deal with that.

Back when Expert mode dropped, my favourite change was the increased money drops.

On normal, you struggle for that first 1G to summon the (((merchant))).

But on expert, you get truckloads of money without even trying. The moment I noticed that, I looked at the Demoman and knew we were going to be great friends.

Bomb-mining is fun as fuck.

Also helps with reforging, I guess, something I barely did on Normal difficulty.
