If only the guns and ammo was the only expense, I'm pretty sure most of us dont live next to a paintball/airsoft range. I'd have to drive 1.5 hours to the nearest one.

With a sim you can eliminate all the hassle that isnt much fun.

Travelling to and back, getting your shit in order and cleaning your shit afterwards stops being fun after you've done it a hundred times.

Not to mention the scope, if you want to have large scale battles with air/paint guns you'll propably have to wait for some large event in another country and that shit costs more than a decent PC real fast.

I know this feeling all too well.

I had an idea where I'd use simulation games such as arma 3 with mods to simulate ground (and hopefully air if i can ever master that) combat, homefront or sins of a solar empire to simulate space combat so I could set up grand fictional scenarios and stories which I can act out with these simulators. I'm currently trying to learn how to play aurora 4x because it includes way more factors that really satisfy my autism. I just wish arma 3 wasn't so janky.

Well you could do it with a regular salary, trouble is you cant do it when you want to.

If I suddenly get the itch for some mockup warfare I cant get 200-300 dudes to come hop with me in the forest on a minutes notice.

Starting up my pc and hopping into an arma session within a minute of getting the urge is possible however.

To do this kind of simulation you would still need computers for simulating other factors of combat, not to mention TCs because airsoft bbs don't actually work like real guns. Even some MILES gear might be in order if you aren't just straight up calculating deaths based on a model that will be run on a computer anyway. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it has its limitations, as ARMA does. You'll be happy to know that the US military uses both types of training. Of course, no need for airsoft when you can just issue blanks and a BFA.
