tl;dr, Flash got meme'd into the grave through the combined efforts of Google and Apple, creating an unstable ecosystem for it. Apple turned it into a boogeyman in their push for HTML5, claiming it was irredeemably unsafe by overblowing security issues, the same way they did with all things Windows. Through YouTube, Google fucked the community aspect of it, by bait and switching artists ability to monetize on the platform. The young artists who grew up into fame via Newgrounds needed to pay adult bills, and were scattered as they no longer had a viable means to do so. The series of events it set off would eventually destroy the community aspect elsewhere, making profit the only thing left.

Why are almost all HTML5 games so simplistic? Where are the modern equivalents of the great games that existed back in the day? I'm not talking about the shovelware that cynically litters the mobile app stores and Steam looking for a quick buck. One weakness of HTML5 is that there's no editor for it. There's no way to import graphics and render/transform vectors and animations and fiddle with a visual editor, you have to set all of it up yourself in a text editor or whatever. You can basically forget about doing any kind of animations or using vectors on HTML5.

You can make games just fine, but it doesn't have the same features as flash when it comes to graphics.
It's good for sprite-based games. But as soon as you want to rotate something it starts to get complicated. You'll have to seek a third party library to handle fancy graphics for you, and even then you're mostly working through pure code without a visual editor for it.

I'm learning Godot. It feels like there are no cultural hubs for such games in the way there were for Flash, and that everyone just uses the upload sites to dump their games that are promoted elsewhere, such as Twitter, or the dev's Tumblr. HTML5 game upload support for /v/ when? I think the ubiquity of Flash as the go-to internet media tool made it easier to bring communities around it. Now there's GameMaker, Unity, Godot, etc, all of which are less approachable than Flash, and aren't viable choices for animation.

Well, lads. Newgrounds and similar sites had an impact on me around 2006. I was watching many of those Mario vs Sonic stuff and downloading amateur VG musics. I lost almost everything due to my incompetence. Flash was terrible, it was a resource hog and a security breach, but how much fun it brought to us.

By the end of 2019, save the flash standalone for all OSs and architectures. My guess is, by 2025, no OS will support running it due to changes on ABI for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Which means you'll need a virtual machine, an old OS and the standalone version to consume flash content.
Personally, I use flashplayerdebugger on Linux. It works really well.

I had an standalone flash player that stopped working, but I found an official Java "Flash Player Projector" that works nicely. https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/updaters/31/flashplayer_31_sa.exe
It's also a simple .exe so bind your .swf files to the .exe and you shouldn't have absolutely any problem.

Well I started making an html document with some simple js to load/unload flash files within a directory, it's been close to 20 years since I've done anything with js or html so it's taking a while.
I've got working functions that will load the file and unload it, but still figuring out how to generate a list of files in the directory, not sure if I can add the 'onclick' tag to regular hyperlinks, I've been using the button element for that purpose.

I tried php because it can do a bunch of shit easily, probably would have been able to use that to generate a directory listing to work with the javascript functions, but php wont run unless it's on a server or if you've got server software running, and then you have to make sure it's under localhost

More bad news, I thought I'd use an already made mini-browser built on python and Qt5 to load these files, because it would be easy to distribute, and only require the user have python installed. Might have worked to even avoid having an html file, but when testing to see if it would load a flash file it segfaulted due to gdkdisplaymanager.
Being able to easily view saved flash files should not be such a pain in the ass.
