I've gotten really into Tetris the past month. Let's discuss it! There's actually a lot more to talk about than you might think. There's many versions of Tetris, and a surprising amount of variation between versions. NES Tetris is completely different from TGM which is very different from Guidelines. Right now my favorite version is the one at Tetris.com because unlike other guidelines games it's not completely trivial to play single player, as the lock delay actually decreases after level 20, and after level 25 is an "almost killscreen" similar to the one after level 30 in NES Tetris. My high score on Tetris.com is 520,000.
I also really enjoy Vs. Tetris on Tetris Friends and Puyo Puyo Tetris, but the latter has really garbage online. Guidelines really shines in multiplayer more than singleplayer.
I wanna get into TGM, so I think I'm gonna get into it on NullPomino (a Java clone of Tetris that allows for a ton of customization). It looks really hard though.
And for some epin drama, Arika is taking down TGM videos on Youtube, and some people don't like the Tetris Company. Also Arika is super asshurt about TGM clones despite never releasing it in the west.

I like TGM but from the classic ones I like the Atari/Tengen version much more than the one Nintendo sabotaged in. It had many more modes and felt much better in my opinion. It makes me sad all the legal issues that made it go unlicensed.

I don't own a PS4 so I haven't played it, but the music is really cool. It doesn't have a versus mode though, which is kinda weird. The main problem with Puyo is the learning curve is disgustingly steep: (and the lack of proper tutorials that teach you what to do when you don't get the exact colors you need, like as building on the 2nd before finishing the 1st)
>lol i dunno man i'm just matching blobs man (1st time puyo)
>ok i read some guides and i can 6-chain now but I keep hitting the walls. how the fuck do I build upwards (beginner)
>great now I'm buried by 2 lines, how the fuck do I dig down, and what the fuck is a tail? (intermediate)
>fuck i always get fucked by a power chain. what do you mean I'm supposed to chain on top of my main chain?
>how the fuck do i build on the 3rd floor without dying (upper-intermediate)
>i can't build a 2nd/3rd/xth chain in time to counter my opponent. also what's this counter shit? (advanced)
You'll encounter similar problems with Tetris, but generally only for high level stuff
>how the fuck did he clear the fucking field after sending 11 lines (from DT Cannon)

>>15747541
>it's kinda hard to get used to because of the way the pieces spawn
That's inherited from Sega's Tetris. Face-down pieces up the difficulty by making it harder to navigate your field at 20G. Also Z is green because fuck you
>weird hard drop that lets you move the piece after dropping it
it's made that way to facilitate zangi-moves (e.g. 6842 motion) with an arcade stick.
>>15749766
To beat TGM3 (Classic rule), you need to be at a level comparable to around 2.5-3 pieces per second on SRS (33-40 secs 40L). Abuse the step-reset lock delay (lock delay resets each time piece lowers) and HOLD (resets lock delay) as much as you can. Avoid getting Section Time COOLs (will skip 1 section's worth of difficulty).
Do note that to get the highest grades you need to get ST COOLs, on top of Tetris COOLs, and surviving the vanishing/invisible roll.

>Tetris verus overall needs a big rework
I don't think it does. SRS Tetris VS plays like a tug of war. Even if you get a terrible garbage pattern, if you're good, you can turn it into REN and make a comeback. Once you become able to hit the 60-80 Attacks Per Minute range it becomes especially fun and also it rapes your fingers. Only things I'd tweak are lower DAS (PPT has 12 frames; too high) and ARR (1 frame; PPT uses 2), and the inconsistent game-over mechanics across installments (some games use 20th row, others 21st).
The only shit I absolutely can't stand is
>shit garbage hole selection algorithms
say, shitty games like Tetris Party which will gladly give your opponent 16 lined up garbage holes so they can rape your ass.
>center 4-wide
they should change it so that you lose if any block crosses the 21st row.
>>15761483
Try Grade Mania 2 or 3 with a guideline rule (e.g. Standard-Fast-B; to do that just pick a mode with your wanted rule, return to main menu, pick your wanted mode, then select (current rule)). Or Extreme mode, which starts you in 20G right away unlike Marathon but it does lower lock delay as you advance levels.
As for guideline Marathon with lowering lock delay proper, there's nothing of the sort built-in.

The biggest problem is that garbage doesn't hinder your playstyle at all. Sure, garbage management and downstacking takes skill, but center 4-wide is busted good because you can absorb 17 lines of garbage and still be completely fine. >>15767807
>If somehow garbage came from the top it would solve alot of problems
That's a terrible idea. It would turn any mid-game spike (e.g. TSD into Tetris) into a game ender (multiple line clears * line clear delay means downstacking is almost impossible), and every opener would become either TSD or perfect clear. Basically, first person to send garbage wins. Unless you make garbage piss-easy to clear a la Tetris Friends, but then that would make garbage inconsequential.
dae328 No.15768229
>>15768136
Then how do you balance garbage inconsequential?
6c1fd1 No.15769951
>>15768229
Who said garbage from the bottom was unbalanced in Tetris? Tetris Online Japan had sensible garbage distribution (hole column change on attack). If you wanted messy garbage you mixed some doubles/triples/REN into your clears. Perfect Clear openers were way less cheap as they would give your opponent 2.5 free Tetrises to send back.
The only thing that's blatantly broken is garbage blocking and 4-wide. The former shouldn't exist, and the latter can be greatly mitigated by deleting any blocks pushed to row 21 and above.
ps. when I was talking about TF garbage being retarded I was referring to non-expert rooms which will gladly give you 16 lined up holes even if your opponent did 16 doubles. Expert+ rooms are mostly alright save for the garbage blocking.

If you think about it compared to a game designed for versus play like puyo, the garbage coming from the top makes multiple playstyles and mindgames possible. In tetris one line of garbage does next to nothing, a couple blocks of garbage in puyo completely change the game if they were dealt at an inopportune time simply because they come from the top and block the pieces your opponent was utilizing. Even non-4wide can tank garbage zero-problem if they aren't very high up, it may even give them an advantage if the holes line up well enough.

>what make each Tetris game different?
Tons of shit:
>rotation system
pre-guideline games vary wildly: some have lock delay, some don't (NES Tetris), some have wallkicks, some don't. The most well-known are TGM's and the modern Tetris guideline's Super Rotation System.
>game modes
there's a fuckton of variety. cascade Tetris (Tetris with cascade gravity), bombliss (in older games. cascade gravity, have to clear field, pieces have bombs in them), Sakura (from Sakura Card Captor Tetris, also in TGM 3), TGM series' VS mode and its wacky shenanigans, magicaliss (a weird mode in Super Tetris 3 with colors and cascade gravity), Tetris Party Deluxe's modes (Bombliss, field climber, stage racer, hot lines, shadow, etc.), Tetris Puzzle Gaiden's (SNES) VS with broken special attacks, Tetris Plus's Puzzle mode, EA's Tetris (PS3, PSP) and its fuckton of modes, etc.
>game-over condition
some games will end your playthrough if as much as a single block hits row 20, others 21. Others end if a block overlaps with your next tetromino which can spawn on row 20, or 21 depending on the game.
>garbage
guideline or not, garbage has never been truly standardized. some games have truly random garbage (like blockbox), others change the hole 90% of the time, others have retarded algorithms that give you several free tetrises (Tetris Party), some change it on every attack (TOJ), others send garbage with holes resembling the last piece used to send it (TGM Series). Others have unique systems (Magical Tetris Challenge).
>randomizer
Guideline games use a 7-piece bag system: you're dealt 1 of each tetromino in groups of 7. non-guideline games have differing randomizers. e.g. NES Tetris's does an 8-sided die roll to determine which of the 7 tetrominos you get, with an extra value for rerolling. If the 1st die roll gives you the same piece as the last or you get a reroll, it rolls a 7-sided die and you get whatever comes out.
>other mechanics
shit like soft-drop speed, auto-repeat rate, delayed auto-shift frames, hold, combos (REN), line-clear delay, T-Spin detection rules, All-spins (Tetris Party Deluxe), number of previews (usually 3 or 5 for guideline), etc.
