I tried a little not long ago DaoC in Uthgard (Private classic server) as my first oldschool mmo, and boy, slow as shit to level, and archaic controls. But I loved the concept and I wanted to at least try it. If CU becomes a a more manageable mmo (without losing complexity and not being just a WOW-clone) then I will join it.
443fd2 No.15718464

Thing with CU is that is not a DaoC sequel. Aside from the concept itself of three realms fighting each other they wont have much in common. CU seems to be purely PvP focused game, PvE is almost non existent and if there is, it is to serve PvP. There wont be much level grind, no big difference between veteran player and a newbie stat wise. All of the gear will be player crafted and alongside the actual skill will be the only thing stratifying players. At least that what i got from the abysmally bad PR they are doing right now.
It wont be a WoW clone by any stretch of imagination but it wont be DaoC clone either.

Also hoping it will be above subpar, my brother and I really just want to be comfy dorfs crafting cool shit, and would be fine if the system they are talking about/attempting to implement actually works out. Worst case scenario, as far as I can see it, is another disappointment with a couple of decent ideas for others to pick from the bones for possibly a better game down the line, but in their defense the fact it's a 3 way fight between groups with the main focus being on them, I am at least optimistically skeptical. Really I just want more interesting crafting systems. As autistic as it is, I loved Wurm's crafting system, especially when it comes to many objects needing a bare minimum quality to actually be used, and being able to hand off items or leave them around for others to improve, and it's honestly a damn shame most MMOs don't even try to do anything with crafting beyond have items, click once or twice, you now have a rare sword!
To answer the Op's question, you won't honestly know if an mmo of any kind is good until you actually play it. Some that have been announced sound like they have pretty cool concepts (aging+permanent death, huge varied skill systems) but unless they make it to the final game it won't mean a damn thing. Black Desert had quite a few interesting ideas (power structures based on military, religion, and mercantile factions within the kingdoms themselves, if I recall correctly, a night cycle that is actually dark and required light sources) but many of these things were cut prior to even bitting beta, all because Koreans wanted to be ant people and mindlessly grind after a hard days work of mindlessly grinding. I just wish I could find the article/blog explaining the whole situation again, if anyone has it and could post it it would be much appreciated. If you ask me though OP don't get your hopes up until you see how close the game matches the idea. Not every idea can be implemented, but that doesn't mean your game should immediately turn into a gear treadmill/Gook Grinder if you were gunning for a sandbox game

Picked this up recently. It's interesting but hardly worth the asking price unless you're a fanatic of what the game offers (loosely connected idea hodgepodge). If all the zones had the attention to detail the starter island had, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the game to someone looking for something that isn't WoW all over again. Admittedly I'm not too far in yet, perhaps later areas improve as the developers get their bearings.
I'm having fun with it for what it's worth, but I struggle to see how PG could be more than a niche within a niche unless they upscale development – especially with their stated summer 2019 release date.

I'm baffled how "not being too grindy" is a selling point for todays MMOs.
MMOs need good grinds and most grinds are bad nowadays but that doesn't change the fact that MMOs have always been about time investment and social interaction.
As for what MMOs are coming out, the only one I'm excited for is Pantheon but the devs are still crowdfunding and hiring. Earliest I see it in a playable state is 2020.
Recently I started wasting my time in BDO which is surprisingly entertaining so far. Nice combat and shitloads to do. Life skills ie what you do if you don't want to grind are unfortunately balanced around afking for the most part. Probably gonna hit a brick wall soon considering I don't want to buy microtransactions.

The fact they are almost all based on you leaving the game alone for 10+ hours should be more than enough to say that they are in fact grindy as hell. That being said, at least you're kind of funding it fun, but I warn you to avoid messing with value packs, as they essentially make or break your character. Ashes of Creation is just doing the battle royale thing for their action combat testing, I am pretty optimistic for how the game will turn out. Their battle royale, and fortress siege is going to be open to everyone in a week or so and I intend on giving it a go. The CEO in an interview said that he isn't a fan of battle royale, but he wanted people to have something fun to do while action combat testing. And I am pissed, because I also dislike battle royales, but I am going to play the Ashes of Creation one when it comes out, because you will apparently be able to unlock cosmetics and mounts for the MMO. Remain weary of this game, but the CEO has been consistent with what he says, they are ahead of schedule, and actually have something playable. I just want a dream MMO for fucks sake. They still plan on doing their alphas as scheduled, then having a couple short betas, then a release before 2020 if things go as planned.

You are thinking of Chronicles of Elyria, which I am also hopeful for, but they are still really early on in their development and have very little playable so far. At least it's an okayish way to have a semi random encounter with other people in open and closed off places. While I despise battle royale, I'd at least say it's better to see how small group and 1v1 conflicts play out than in the big fights that MMO's have started turning to. >Remain weary of this game, but the CEO has been consistent with what he says, they are ahead of schedule, and actually have something playable. This sums up MMOs currently. Those two are pretty much the best there is currently. MMOs will probably remain shit forever, because most have fully adopted lootboxes and microtransactions. And if nothing else they've become elaborate Skinner boxes designed keep people around much longer than they should realistically want to play a single game. Games aren't supposed to last forever. And the quality of a game should not be gauged by how long it is or how much money it makes.
ccf505 No.15728322
Ashes of Creation is indeed the way to go- if you can stomach a subscription.
I can't, but I appreciate that it's furthering the genre as a whole.
Particularly excited for the "muh emergent world map is impossibru outside two dee" argument's timely demise as a ragtag group of dumb nerds put together something fat dev teams have been refusing to for years.
I mean, after the 'node' system becomes status quo and people get a feel for how it operates, and pairing in the partially ecologically simulated animals and monster Ashes shrinks the list of 'never ever's quite a bit.
It's a shame Everquest Next was mismanaged so hard, the ideas behind Landmark were a massive step in the right direction.
One day I'll be able to spend all my spare time forging and selling extremely powerful dong-shaped swords with dong-shaped hitboxes and dong-like stat bonuses/active effects in a feature complete MMORPG. One day.

I heard that a lot of the devs from Everquest Next got snatched up by Intrepid for Ashes of Creation after EQNext bit the dust. There is definitely a lot of similarity between the two projects. I am hoping Ashes is half the game they promise it will be, and so far things look like they are headed in the right direction. Another positive note is that Ashes of Creation is self-published in NA, so they can't get sold like Everquest Next was. The only things I am really worried about are them going full jew, or being unable to execute their vision well. I guess only time will tell.

To be honest they seem to be moving along alright enough. They had their first Beta recently and my brother and I screwed around in it for a bit. The combat system is kind of interesting, the little we personally messed with, because you could combine effects to create abilities. We were mainly messing with the crafting, and we couldn't figure it out fast enough (it went down before we could really get into it) but we want to focus on messing with that rather than mainly combat like we usually do for MMOs. They have been working on the UI for crafting (apparently untested but showing off proof of concept) and with any bit of luck once another beta starts up we can actually get into it and start screwing with things.
It's definitely something different, and I'm hoping I'm autistic enough to really learn the system, provided it is as deep as the developers and myself hope for.
