Can we have a thread for video games that have charming and lovable cast members? Preferably lighthearted games but darker ones will do too. What games are filled with fun characters you grow to like and can interact with?
For me A Hat in Time and Summon Night: Swordcraft Story are great examples. I feel like playing something equally as lighthearted and fun and wanted you guys to recommend me something. I know that there are probably going to be a lot of recommendations for cute girls games, and that is completely fun, but I would prefer a more and I don't mean this word in a SJW way diverse cast, not in the cuck meaning of the word. I mean that I would like to preferably see a more cartoony cast of different creative cartoony beings of different genders with their own quirks and personalities like in A Hat in Time where we had Mafia men, Ghosts, Birds, aliens and other stuff like that.

The "Japanese producers trying to do western-atmosphere story while putting their own style on it" always have very charming characters I do agree. I will need to actually fucking finish Binary Domain someday. Though I have Deadly Premonition to play as well.

Not exactly original, but it's true that Mother 3 has very charming characters - not all characters, mind you, but the main cast, certainly.
I've also heard NWN has good characters and party members you come to love but I have not played it yet
Of course, there's also the Sam & Max games, particularly the older ones.

>Sam & Max games
I really love the characters and stories there but I hate the point'n click genre because whenever I get stuck on a puzzle or can't find an item the game basically becomes fucking dead until I figure it out, and it can take hours. There is basially a feeling of "you need to activate a variable to continue" to break my immersion.
I will have to play Mother 3 someday finally.
e8e139 No.15717137

Every game is basically just "you need to activate a variable to continue", so you shouldn't think of such a thing let alone allow it to break your immersion.

If you haven't played it, Ghost Trick's got a pretty likable cast to witness the strange interactions amongst, and for a game about death is generally lighthearted and optimistic in the face of it. Does get darker and tearjerkerish towards the end, but is a real earn-your-happy-ending tale as it closes. Direct interaction though is usually only with those that have also died (the dead can hear fellow dead), or by prompting an observed discussion in regards to how your tricks influence the surroundings. Might also be a good idea to leave the thread before someone decides to have themselves some fun spoiling shit for you.

The problem is that in point'n click games, there is nothing keeping your immersion when you gather all the information in the area and actually get to the puzzle. What you basically have is an empty world that you're locked in until you can solve the puzzle and no new text to speak of. You really stop thinking about the characters as characters when you go over their dialogue a few times to see if you've missed something and see the same lines over and over again, same with the environments when you listen to the same descriptions often. Honestly this is probably mostly me being bad with point'n click puzzles, missing obvious shit as well a the fact that the characters move TOO FUCKING SLOW in those games.

NWN is as bland as it gets. Everything from the story to the characters, to the Jeremy Soule(ss) soundtrack. NWN's real trademark is that it's a toolkit that just happens to have a template campaign attached to it, to demonstrate the various trigger types.

Even if they dont have that much dialogue and characterization, i always found the cast of the resident evil games really likable, specially the ones of the first game with that cool live action intro.

Hollow Knight has some legitamitely charming and fun characters in it. Even the main character, mute and expressionless, has an endearing quality about him. The only game to get me to actually like an intentionally assholish character, in fact. Does get a little dark sometimes, and has a sort of somber air.
Bravely Default is notable for having such a great main cast that manages to almost (almost) completely dampen the midgame's horrible, horrible repitition, and Ringabel is fun and hilarious. They all complement and balance each other out, the banter is enjoyable and often funny. There's only one annoying character And her being a standout in this fashion is one of the first hints of her true nature .
In a sorta meta way, Touhou's got it going on. I mean, this is a series where the main cast is so dramatically powerful they all have agreed to resolve disputes with what amounts to magic dodgeball because otherwise they'd level half the setting, so the games are lighthearted and rompy as a result.
If you're willing to put up with some jank-ass gameplay, you might also want to check out Deadly Premonition and SWERY's other games. They've got a super distinct feel and charm all their own. His latest (The Missing) might be a bit too poz for this board, though.

Nice characters, some of them a little edgy and you could "split up gang" when you got to towns by pressing square and wander around the towns and interact with your party, I still like that game. If you like JRPGs, Tales tends to be helped on the character interaction end by way of optional dialogues between them ("skits"), which is something some other series could really take note from (Dragon Quest and Star Ocean being the others that come to mind). Granted, most of them don't have much player choice to the "interaction" if that's what you're looking for, and some are more apt to be deemed to have charm than others (Symphonia and Vesperia for example, whereas Abyss is much more prone to people absolutely hating the cast without giving them time to develop), and if you can't at least tolerate anime you're not apt to like them anyhow.
