I got like halfway through Rogue Galaxy and got bored with it, but I had a roommate at the time that loved it. It's indeed a love it or hate it thing. I personally thought the gameplay was bland and I couldn't stand the localization, it was pretty awful even for early 2000s standards. I may pop it in one day just to give it a second chance though.

A lot of the charm of Xenoblade is the exploration of the massive environments and impressive draw distance. It was really cool to see things far off in the distance and eventually be able to explore them. The sequel handled sidequests better though.
e2b85f No.15711328
>>15711287
Admittedly the sidequests could have been done better (I'm not sure if XCX or XB2 have seen to that or not; no WiiU or Switch here), or at least had more of a world building emphasis, the way the locket one did, or more gameplay perk to do, like the portable ether furnace. Completionist's nightmare. Still on the whole a very good memorable game, and the threads when it was current here in NA were a lot of fun.
Ghost Trick also fits the age limit and has long been a memorable favorite amongst /v/irgins.

>I couldn't stand the localization, it was pretty awful even for early 2000s standards.
Early 2000s? That was late-mid 2000s at 2007. Also handled by 8-4, whose quality seems dependent on who hires them, or if left to their own devices (which is what they prefer).

Handhelds definitely felt like they had more of a quality library than consoles in seventh gen, though admittedly they still had a lot of shovelware too (as any popular system sees). Perhaps on account of increasing console development costs driving some series and devs to handhelds.

Close enough, I still don't have fond memories of the localization. In particular I remember they had some clerk that talked like a teenage valley girl bimbo, which was a go-to archetype for a lot of western localizers and voice actors in games and anime when they don't know how to deal with regional nip accents or cute characters. I'm picky about localization and I'm not nuts about a lot of the freelancers 8-4 hires from time to time, so I guess you can take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Yeah, they hire a lot of freelancers and contractors, that is why their quality is all over the place. Sometimes they hire a few people that once worked at Working Designs, and you can see they still have the same bad habits and shitty 90s pop culture references. Hiring contractors and freelancers is a bit of an industry wide practice, that's why there is so much inconsistency even from the same publishers and localization contractors. This is compounded even further when publishers don't bother putting a leash on the people they pick up for writers and editors, because a lot of those sort of people are out of touch gen Xers and twitter junkies, and you get what comes with that if the publisher doesn't care about the final product.

That is something I honestly don't get why they did it, be it for this, or the difference in quality for nuStrange Journey. Did Radiant Historia fail to do nearly as well in Japan and the difference in style and design was meant to appeal more to the potential native audience? Or was it simply to encourage people to hand over more money to get the previous art style back?
Tangentially related, but also deleting the existing RH subdomain of their website, Fatlus deleted the old staff interviews for the DS original. In fact, the only DS game still listed on their website, at least out here, is Devil Survivor 2. Likewise, there's only a single PSP game given the time of day (Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time), and while I'm not sure I'd expect PS1 to have been current when they might have been first making their current site, I'd expect at least a PS2 section given how much stuff their Japanese branch made as well as what the western branch brought over, and how they've been reprinted and digitally rereleased over the years, but there isn't one. I know memory or bandwidth or whatever has a cost associated, but you'd think they're deliberately covering up their past to promote current stuff, especially in cases of these 3DS remakes since those are what's current.
At least the entirety of the old Radiant Historia staff interviews got archived. Someone ought to see if it's the same case for other games that have had their URLs repurposed or their entire game sections deleted.

What I really dislike about Cold Steel is how they didn't build on the orbment system they had already created and improved over the Sora and Zero/Ao games, they just dropped it for some shitty
[Quartz]=[Set spells+stats or a special effect]
system. I also don't like how the combat doesn't try to make crafts either change the condition of an area or damage enemies depending on where you are, which would have been the natural progression from the previous games. I blame this on the departure from grids to everything now being circular because muh 3D. Equipment is also still just a glorified stat incline that could've easily been implemented into character levels. Admittedly Cold Steel didn't start this and a metric fuckton of rpgs suffer from this kind of stuff, doesn't excuse it though. The dungeons somehow got more linear in design from the predecessors, and smacking enemies in the back in the overworld and stunning them is so overpowered it's not even funny. It also feels insanely clunky to do most of the time, they really should have redesigned this from the ground up to not be so shitty. Cold Steel 2 admittedly makes it a little better but it's still shit. Call me a faggot but I still fucking love the story of these games, it seems like the only people ever putting their full attention into the games are the writers. Despite it's flaws it's still a pretty good experience, but a huge stepdown in design from Zero/Ao which are probably going to forever be the pinnacle of the Densetsu series.

There's a reason most people remember it fondly. It's a rougelike rpg action game where you can get boosted in the game early via inventions and photography of the right objects, and getting stage medals to secure name tickets that can turn a basic wrench into a god killer.
The more shit you photograph, the better the game is. You can make your own guns and parts provided you take the time to check the towns and areas for recipes. You can recruit the entirity of the developed starting town to make your own towns, with more loose conditions then the first game so you have plenty of room to do what you want. You can take pictures in the towns you created to use them as parts for new inventions. You can fucking play rougelike GOLF.
It even has an optional bonus dungeon with fucking hard enemies that tests you and your resourcefulness throughout the game. It starts out slow, but after the first dungeon options open the fuck up.
It's what a fully realized RPG looks like, it's not just stats and progression, there's actual stupid minigame shit you can do in it and I haven't even covered half of it.
