3000 Unlimited is probably the best, but SC4 is pretty good with mods. More mods are disappearing though and a lot of good content makers are gone.

Assuming you have Windows 7, then probably the usual: Compatibility mode and installing outside of program files. There are GoG threads on it that would be much more helpful since I've never had an issue getting the game to run myself.

I only really played three versions of SimCity, the SNES one was really fun and my first touch into it, the CD version with the FMV sequences of the news reporter lady getting bullied was always fun, and I spent some time in 2000 but nowhere near as much as I technically should have, especially since I have Streets of SimCity as well.

I found copies of SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4 from donation shops like Goodwill but I haven't put in any time on them at all, I don't really know why. I guess I just haven't really wanted to play it since I know what happens to it in the end.

Fuck you, EA. Fuck you eternally.

NAM is a must. It includes a number of bug fixes, makes the pathfinding better, and adds a lot of new options for road building. Then you have IH missing $$$ jobs fix, opera house fix, and whatever other proven game fixes are out there. Aside from that, everything else is really up to personal taste.

Reminds me of when I first played flight simulator in the late 90's as a slightly-psychopathic 12-year-old. One of the "preset" flights put you on landing approach to JFK airport right near Manhattan. Of course, if you turned slightly to the left, there was the WTC towers (or at least grey boxes that vaguely looked like them) right there. Was easy to fly between them with a small plane, far more difficult to do so with a BIG plane. So why bother trying to get between? Instead, just load up the biggest jumbo jet the game had, and fly into the towers. Repeatedly. For the lulz. Sometimes I'd hit one, reload and then hit the other. Was always disappointed that the plane would crash but the buildings would never get damaged. So on 9/11 I was the only person in the world that yelled out "I did it first!"

No, not really. That would have been mean.

On-topic, I've played the SimCity series since SC2000 (ported to the PSX). Back then I was really terrible at it. Had no sense of aesthetic and assumed that the "goal" was just to cover every possible square of the map with stuff. So I'd flatten mountains and fill oceans and put houses and shops there. Just endless low-density sprawl (because land values were too shit to allow much else). I basically turned every single map into Los Angeles. Funny.

I played a lot of SC3000, probably more than any of the others. Loved the music, loved the style, loved the ability to make my own buildings, loved the off-brand humor. Experimented with various (mostly graphical) exploits that allowed you to do stuff like put tunnels under rivers, connect avenues seamlessly with freeways, put multiple bridges side-by-side, make railway viaducts, etc.. Also started creating custom maps with greyscale jpegs. It was just the most comfy iteration in the series, if you ask me.

Finally got actually good with SC4. Learned how to actually play the game rather than just winging it. While I think it's the best game in the series just by virtue of its complexity, I don't play it as much as I should. Especially when cities start getting really big, everything just takes FOREVER to do anything. You zone some new land and it'll sit idle for half an hour before half of them will grow some level-1 houses, and the rest will continue to sit idle. Mostly, I turned to "painting" landscapes using a variety of mods that do little more than put in aesthetic ground clutter. But compared to what I was doing in earlier games, this finally allowed me to start making some truly beautiful things.

You can have roughly 19.5 million citizens with arcologies if you only build the one with 65k capacity and only build 300 of them. The 301st arcology will trigger the Exodus-event which will destroy all arcologies placed. So, 10 millions is pretty much nothing compared to what is possible.

They do, but it kinda kills my motivation. However, I appear to have fixed it. Seems to be a bug when using software rendering instead of hardware. Game can't do resolutions higher than 1920x1080 using the hardware renderer. Or at least that is what I'm assuming is what caused the problem.

Yeah, getting all the right mods together can be a chore. Especially if the goal is a completely different city design. Then after that it really becomes a test of how well you know real towns and how good you are at the game. Autism as well, some people on Simtropolis would spend like a year just planning out their cities to make them perfect.

Always wanted to make one of those City Journal things over there. Just never got up the motivation, and always felt it would be a waste of time because there were so many and I wasn't doing anything special to stand out. Spend months putting together shit and then three people look at it and nobody comments.
