>This week involved a lot of bug-fixing from last week, so there's not as much concrete progress to report. For instance, a human trading company called the Present Hall was wildly successful trading various leathers and bones for crafting, and eventually had enough clout to open a branch warehouse inside a dwarf fortress for the first time. Can't resist that draltha leather. This turned out to be a strategic error, as two short years later, a forgotten beast obliterated the fortress, the warehouse, and killed everyone inside. So, what's the correct response? Close the destroyed branch? No, no, you stimulate the (non-existent) economy by hiring local. Forgotten beast, you're the new (ruined) warehouse administrator, congratulations! Those sorts of fixes were straightforward, but more time was burned with screwed-up resource lists, naming problems and some stability issues.

>After muddling through that, we were going to move to some basic religious organization and link formation, as mentioned last time, but we instead decided to pause and nail down the boundaries for this pre-villain spree and reassess the proper order of implementation. The plan now is to do the intermediate market-town/castle/fort nobles for humans first (this has been in the cards to secure some solid villain hideouts/strongholds), get those integrated with the new court/household positions, consider a few higher households when enough territory has accrued (similar to the dwarf county/duchy system, with the new subordinate positions), and handle some basic movement and link formation there. Respect the large market towns a bit with some civilian bureaucracy and industry representation; it's not the scheduled return of the guilds, as that requires certain code infrastructure, but a counterbalance to now-rampant nobles feels necessary. Then religion. Then we'll be ready for the simple non-villainous crimes and corruption that live on top of these systems and are also important for blackmail etc.

>So. Once that's done, we should have more than enough material for villains to feel robust in their scheming. Don't let me say otherwise, he he he. In some sense, we've been a bit silly with the additions, as usual, but this is fine. The demands of a proper-feeling feature lead us on such journeys from time to time.

Kek. Fanboys always come up with the best excuses for their devs. Just look at Star Citizen. You can tell the Toady's game is so bloated now he can't manage it. All your talk of "world simulating", "lore generating", and "history" is instantly shattered when you realize stone makes almost all of the trades are useless, raised cages/bridges/walls make all of the military structures are useless, and the only thing you can really do once you get established is suicide by clowns since the framerate is too shit now for dwarf science and there is no real chance of your civilization crumbling as a real one would.

What does stone value have to do with world simulating? Most of it happens in world gen and you interact with it via fortress or adventure mode.

I'm talking about the fans attitude and ability to make up excuses for all the games faults. Not whether or not the games free.

I didn't say stone value. I'm not talking about selling the stones. I'm talking about how every other craft trade, aside from niche items like beds for wood, glass pipes for glass, can be completely replaced with stone. That breaks the immersion completely. Pottery is useless. Glass crafting has 1 use. Wood has 1 use. Bonecrafting is useless. Metalworking is useless. In any society these trades had several roles they needed to fill. In Dwarf Fortress stone can basically do fucking everything.

It's the same for food. Plump helmets replace everything. Dig to the cavern. Wall it off. Flood a section of your base with enough water to be able to farm it. Then you're set. That's not the only way either. If I remember correctly you can even dig holes in the ground above where you want your farm and have your units dump buckets of water through the holes by labeling them as a pool or something. You can make a shitload of food with it. Meaning: You don't need to manage livestock. You don't need to use fishing at all (exposing your fortress to the outside world). It makes Ale, so you don't need to have a well (which would be a security threat to your fortress).

The fact silverbullets like this exist that make the other trades completely useless makes the game totally unrealistic to me. I will never overlook such a glaring flaw in a simulation game.

Its weird. 0.40 was basically nothing to do: the game. Tantrum spirals were almost completely removed because emotional reactions were nerfed. There wasn't the off-screen world map (C)ivilisation screen shit you can do now, and there wasn't really anything interesting with Dwarves. The only stuff you could do is kill shit.

The issues I see with FPS death that people are complaining about aren't all THAT significant if you consider they've been around for ages. 3x3 embark size is still quite good and is guaranteed to have at least 1 adamantine pillar, and having a fuckhuge population is more filler than anything tbh. The biggest problem with the game right now stands with the introduction of the new memories and interpersonal relationships. Basically there are two things happening making medium-long term forts unviable

1) Dwarves will remember being rained on 15 times a decade ago and that will take emotional precedence over the memory of them birthing a child, or whatever other example you can think of involving +Schist mugs+ and a cave crocodile. It wasn't long ago either that actually Dwarves would having repeating terrible memories and experiences on the same subject, so it was seen that your Dwarves were developed PTSD from seeing tens of smashed gobbo teeth lying around and would wreck your fort in tantrum spiral. Thankfully it was fixed.

2) (And this is the main one) Dwarves don't actually socialise properly, so new migrants come to fort, sit around doing work or whatever and after a while will start getting negative emotions from not being able to talk to family members or friends even when they're there. There is supposed to be a way to cheese this by unassigning and reassigning labours of defective Dwarves and setting multiple meeting locations, but mostly its broken as fuck. The Dwarves will become depressed as fuck over time and will inevitably enter into a tantrum even with masterwork shit all around them.

Toady is aware of the second issue apparently and I heard its supposed to be fixed on next release when all the new villain shit and relationship linkages with hist figs come into the game.

I've started making corpse towers in my forts. Just large multi level buildings filled up with corpses, left without a roof to avoid miasma build up of course. It avoids a lot of the nonsense with your fort going outside and just seeing mounds of death. Also you could use your military for corpse hauling or just some dwarves you think have superior emotional resistance.

It isn't my fort, but I know how you feel. I tried to make a circle fort like in the pic but then I just ended up slapping rectangles everywhere

I recently learned though that the automine feature for dfhack is really nice if you have lots of gems or metal ores that occur in veins, since the resulting paths can come out pretty organic like.
