How does this hold up? Was it really that great in the first place? How many of you even played/finished this?

Was unreal only good to give birth to unreal tournament and the unreal engine?

f4c9bf  No.15678218

The first Unreal is still one of the best games in the genre.

First Unreal? Unbearably boring on top of looking ugly like an “HD Texture Pack” for Quake. Lots of empty levels with nothing to do, movement is slow and feels sluggish.

It's fucking great. The weapons were really unique for the time without feeling gimmicky, the music is great, and the levels are generally all really good. I loved exploring the alien world through data logs and environmental storytelling back when I first played it, and I still replay it pretty regularly. I'd rank it my third or fourth best FPS I ever played.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels like this. My thoughts while playing it could be summed up with "Wow this looks fucking beautiful and the music is fantastic but holy shit this gameplay sucks"

Played it nearly two decades after the first release, and I still think that it's fun. What bothered me chiefly were the nice guy aliens (Talii or what they were called) using medieval European architecture for some reason, and the levels not feeling connected because each map apparently was made by a single dev and then loosely tied together into a campaign.

The ability to boost your starter gun into a potentially lethal weapon still was nice, though. As was the machine pistol and the shard rifle.

That's strange. What captivated me back when I first played it was the fact that the levels all felt like they flowed into eachother, giving this illusion of one huge journey from the start of the game all the way to the end. There's parts here and there where you take a space elevator, or get teleported and end up in a completely different environment, but even then you can often still see the place you came from as a skybox or a background prop. This felt really refreshing at the time, when I was coming from FPS games that were entirely episodic in design.

For the time the maps were really well connected actually. Like you could see the Sunspire in the skybox before actually reaching it.

Pretty meh. Graphics might have been amazing at the time, but the game itself is rather boring: linear levels, only a few enemies at a time, slow movement. It feels like it was designed to sell the engine. Multiplayer was supposedly good, but if you want multiplayer you might as well just play Unreal Tournament instead.

Unreal tournament 2k4 had an amazing mode where you fought off hordes of the monsters from this game. Possibly the only wave defense game I've ever enjoyed. I have many fond memories of Fraghouse invasion.

>linear levels

Open world shooters suck ass. And the movement speed was pretty fast, especially compared to modern games, it's just that the maps were big.

Only if there was a 24/7 server for ut2k4

I'll be honest: the only problem I have with Unreal is, oddly, that it's too long. Normally that isn't a bad thing but the game gets repetitive and you find yourself wishing that you could just get to the exciting parts. If they'd cut things down and reduced the game to only its best ideas, it STILL would have been a 6-10 hour experience, and it would have been all killer, no filler.

10 hours is the perfect length for a pure FPS game, anything more than that and it starts to drag.
