The game just got updated, for those unaware it's a sequel to an old HL1 mod that's been in development for over 11 years. The plan was to flesh out the original PVK formula with redone maps, fancier source graphics and new classes to rebalance and add new dynamics to the game.

The game is a class based multiplayer game with 3 separate teams all competing for various goals, such as get a number of kills with a holy item in hand which grants perks to teammates nearby, collect and steal and defend treasure chests from the opposing teams, king of the hill, and other objective style maps. Combat is very deep with a variety of mechanics for each weapon, such as ricocheting projectiles, parries, dodge rolls, directional combat, launching opponents and there's various classes each with unique loadouts, specials and stats all essential to the make up of a team. Each map is also very well designed both aesthetically and for game play.

I'm sort of using this opportunity to nominate the mod for a game night. Whoever is involved with arranging them I think it would be a fantastic breath of fresh air. The mod is available on steam and I'm sure some of you out there can figure out a way to play it without Steam. Have you played it before? What do you think of it?

Yeah but in this case it means trading flint lock pistols and blunderbusses for javelins and throwing axes which can pin enemies to the wall like the hl2 rebar crossbow did before they broke it.

Glad to see this is still being worked on. This was always one of the best Source mods available. It's kind of like Chivalry if it was more like Quake and less like a shitty wannabe realistic game. Also the voice lines are great and different for each faction, a crucial touch. Lots of interesting game modes to play that aren't fucking boring team deathmatch and lots of interesting maps.

I miss the old voice lines. I still have them saved if I ever get the time to restore them but I think someone beat me to it and there's apparently a workshop mod out there. The old "c'mon you pansy" from the knights was my favorite.

I haven't played this in years, it's my favorite source mod tied with Age of Chivalry. If we do play this for a game night I'm in, not sure if there's some anon that's willing to set up a server or if there's availability for just an empty server we can all hop in but hopefully someone can set it up

They're up to 10 classes now, all split between each team with Vikings now having 4. If you haven't played in that long it's a really wildly different game. I've played just about every version since 2007.

I didn't like Age of Chivalry or its successor(s) that much. I got what they were going for but I think there's just too many limitations in terms of design to accommodate that sort of autistically realistic combat, especially because it's easily broken to become an awkward and unenjoyable mouse-flinging fest. PVK2 is straight forward but keeps things like the physics up to 11 and is designed around that absurdity. It makes the combat really energetic and frantic. All the basics are done right, the sound cues, identifying targets, the weapons behavior. Everything feels like it has a purpose.

PVK2 is a much better game hands down, most of my love for AoC is nostalgiafagging. I was in the most active server of that game pretty much every night years ago and there was a core group of people that were always playing that were pretty cool. The game itself was incredibly poorly balanced with wonky controls but it was something I had never really seen before so the novelty of that was able to keep my attention for a while. It has some pretty cool maps too. Somehow though Chivalry (the unreal engine game they made after it) is pretty shit and somehow worse than the free source mod.

I followed a bit of the development of it after I started playing Chivalry. They pointed out how the way the netcode works in UE3 and the new systems they were working with allowed them to tune up the accuracy of all the stroke patterns and push things to a new level. Maybe that increased fidelity and accuracy is what caused it to be so bad? They had comparison images of the patterns and the source animations were simple and clean whereas when I think of the way hit "boxes" (splines?) worked in Chivalry it allowed for significantly more complicated tracking which is much less cleanly represented in a player vs player experience. If you know someone's attack is going to make an oval pattern you can track it pretty well. If that pattern becomes a double butter donut (which is a real shape) then it becomes far too abstract to process in a reasonable amount of time.
