I am getting super mixed feelings about this. First of all; I welcome a new console in the market. There are 4 main dominating forces in the market, and a fifth serious competitor could bring some diversity in the mix. Next: I have no idea why they chose the phone controller design; presumably for nostalgia reasons, but it really doesn't have a practical value to make this decision. IV also decided to go with the "let's make a retro console for the future" of Nintendo and Sony, but if they seriously consider pro licensing (sports games) and remaking retro games for the older population, they could actually have a decent shot at stabilizing. This isn't a home console like the PS4 or the Xbox, but at least if they can make some retro games available alongside sports they appeal to a large crowd. The phone thingy is fucking brilliant, since you could always ask your normal "the gamer is dead" friends over, and just play a party game with your phone which is super convenient, especially for normalfags. I feel like the console is not going to flop, if and only if they advertise properly, make promotions, contact Twitch streamers and Youtubers etc etc. they might actually stand a chance. No major home console, but it might be a somewhat decent alternative to the current options.

From the clip: I like the way the advertisement is made, this style should be the main focus for the console. The pricing and the no-dlc/IAP is great, this can be a good promotional stunt to compete with the others and say: look at them, they are jewing you out. A classic leaderboard system is nothing special, but it would be cool to see for the classic arcade games if they bring it back. The pricing is also fair, $200 ma for the console? That is actually pretty decent. The team is also looking good, and if IV decides to properly use they forces they hired, some quality is to be expected.

Except it isn't competing with consoles. It isn't the same market. Its competing with emulators and 20 year old consoles. Nobody buys old arcade games except by mistake. People that are actually willing to pay for old arcade games generally buy arcade cabinets and old consoles because those are way more nostalgia-ing. The problem with small dev companies making a fucking console is that they don't understand why nintendo and sony can produce consoles as well as keep good games on the system; they make the games that are put onto their console. Every game that has a nintendo label on it is either produced by the company wholesale or is published by nintendo, who put their stamp of approval on it. Having a neat idea for a console is equivalent to creating a new engine for a game and then just selling that engine alone.

This shit will continue to pile up in the graveyards until they realize that they can make an engine, make a box that runs that specific engine software, and sell it to people to begin to compete with larger companies, producing games that run on that specific engine and making deals with bigger companies to make their game on this new, functional device to prevent the stagnation that's been burdening the gaming industries.
