gep gun is the only real choice as both of the other weapons can be found in the level and the gep gun satisfies multiple utilities. Crossbow is also useless, especially for stealth, its entire purpose. Sniper is also shit unless you deliberately crippled your build with shitty choices from the start screen.

Only when I wanted to use them, but guns were such a bad choice especially by the time you got the dragons tooth that speccing into any of them was worthless. gep rockets still took out most mechs and locked doors with ease, even if the bigger mechs took 2 hits. Shotguns sucked, rifles sucked, pistols sucked (although sucked less)

the level design is very underwhelming. Until the ocean lab I believe you'll hit a total of 3 alternate swimming routes which are literally all just pipes that have a negligible skill point reward for exploration. Other than the ocean lab it's mildly useful in the canals but even then you're better off just getting two rebreathers and using those instead. Swimming is proof of the games poor skill balance, as if all the weapons being pretty shit isn't proof enough

Depends on the kind of way you want to play the game, if you want to smack and shoot all the enemies like Navarre or Gunther, you would take combat strength and attempt to overpower enemies with raw force. If you take microfibal muscle you can lift metal crates and move otherwise unmovable objects to get to paths you may otherwise not be able to and aid in a no-kill approach like maybe your brother would take.

If you're fighting them you'll just use explosives, as melee puts you in too much of harms way turning the game into a quicksave/quickload spam fest to try and cheese them. Combat Strength won't help. You'll get more utility out of moving the large metal crates and making your own openings to explore the environment, especially because it frequently gifts you with more items and even skill points. Explosives will make quick work of gunther and navarre which by the time you fight them you're bound to have tons. Their shield makes shooting them also very ineffective.

I haven't been keeping track of it since Spring but Kingdom Come Deliverance does a lot of the same things as Deus Ex, albeit with a much less convoluted story and a good deal more focus. Combat isn't great in it and it does leave a lot to be desired as far as its polish goes. It focuses on plenty of the same game play memes, the "emergent gameplay" to use some marketing speak, where you can decide how to complete quests. I don't know if they'll ever add in the rest of the content but as is, it's at least better than Deus Ex. Dark Messiah is another good one although feels very incomplete. Definitely has better combat although on the higher difficulties enemies become a real damage sponge and you'll find yourself wondering why some random goblin nigger needs to be plunged into 4 times while he's on the ground. That one is even more similar to Dude Sex.

We were talking about a melee route, and it makes no sense to use combat muscle when you can just spec a bit into low tech and get far more utility out of a different aug. It's pretty basic shit there son. And nobody would seriously use melee on navarre or gunther without save scumming. Always hated the changes those mods did to the visuals. Only gameplay mod I've played the full game with was shifter which does change the skill point system to something that lets you do a little more experimentation and adds some unique weapons. I tried GMDX once but wasn't very impressed at any changes it did to the gameplay. Shifter's quite a bit older than GMDX which seems to be the new meme these days.

I think the benefit of GMDX is that you can at least tweak settings to your liking. If I were you I'd go in a mess about with settings until you find a playstyle that suits you.
Also if you don't enjoy our graphics mods then you don't need to have them installed. Similarly you don't need HDTP to run New Vision. In the case of GMDX however they are required. HDTP wasn't without its issues, New Vision was designed in a much smarter way, smaller team, more authority from key members, HDTP was very much design by committee which is why it came out the way it looks.
I've looked at the characters and how I'd improve them, I did have a very good approach for it but because of how big a game Deus Ex is this would be a very tedious process requiring months to years worth of work to texture every NPC with higher resolutions. Though I've come the the understanding that new models is not the way to go, adding new models is why HDTPs characters ended up as bad as they did due to complications with the Unreal 1 engine. Simply retexturing the characters would've been enough.
