It's been a while since the last one, but what are you playing on your PS2? Working on modding or loading up a hard drive? Looking for a good recommendation?

I'm working on building a library for my PS2 right now and I'm a little confused. I've got a good 180 or so games here, many of which are exclusive or just best on the PS2. I feel like there should be a lot more than that. I'm at about my HDD's capacity of 500GB so I don't think I'll be getting any more immediately but do you think there's any games missing from the lists I have?

>For once PS2 OP is not a rage-baiting faggot.

>but what are you playing on your PS2? Working on modding or loading up a hard drive? Looking for a good recommendation?

Been taking a break from things lately after the last games I finished. Do have a backlog, especially for the PS2 though, that I ought to get back to soon enough. That said, if an anon knows a good guide/documentation for working HDLdump, I've got some stuff I'd like to update, and not just on my PS2's drive either. Last time I went looking I really couldn't find shit in comparison to winhiip (which has struck me as a self feeding problem, IE: winhiip has more/easier to find information because more people people use it due to it having more information known). Also, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind got a patch a few days back if that's of interest to anyone. Haven't tried it yet, so I don't know if it's a good game, nor if it's a good adaptation.

>do you think there's any games missing from the lists I have?

Depends; do you count game being ported forward as HD releases/remasters (IE: not counting as extended ports/remakes) to make the prior versions no longer exclusive? Reasonably often the originals still wind up superior to some degree. Also, your lists could be better organized; the way things are now makes it harder to know what you've got there that it might as a single alphabetized one.

>do you count game being ported forward as HD releases/remasters

I noticed a lot of these in my research have some benefits like higher frame rates, but tend to have missing effects as certain things were only pulled off on the PS2. Things like Devil May Cry 1 come to mind where it is 1080p+ elsewhere but effects like Mundus heat wave attack don't look right. I'm a bit tolerant of it but for some things I'd prefer to have the original version as those are typically by the original creators and may even have details undocumented as missing in later releases.

As far as the organization I apologize, I had to separate it onto two separate drives due to storage limitations. There's a bit of redundancy there too, which is my mistake. I ultimately made this thread because I believe the PS2 has a lot more must play games than what I have. I've got a few smaller Japanese only titles too, and I've added a few more since making the thread like Ka 2: Let's Go to Hawaii, Samurai Western and Haunting Ground to name just a few.

Doesn't 180 seem low to you? I consider there to be about 60 must play original Xbox games, but I felt the number 300 or so would be more on point for the PS2.

Been collecting a lot of PS2 games I missed out on over the years. Managed to find a lot of the essentials at local/mom and pop stores before scalpers got a hold of them (most recent being God Hand). Holding off on playing them though until I go through the rest of the modern games I have so I can get those out of the way and sell them and the systems so I can focus on the PS2, older/same generation games, and PC games in earnest. looking forward to it since most modern games are either shit or on platforms I do not intend to get.

That and God Hand are pretty tough to come by. Keep an eye out for it.

Oh and if you like the extreme sports games like Tony Hawk and SSX, keep an eye out for Downhill Domination. It's a mountain biking racer with inspirations from both of those, but also from road rash. It's got the usual tricks and everything, but also punching, kicking, beating and throwing glass bottles at your opponents.

The game isn't just absurd with its mechanics but also its level designs. The very first level has you starting on a pretty normal rainy mountain side, evergreen trees adding up as you make your way down until you see smoke in the distance and lightning strikes a helicopter, as it goes down the same forest you were riding through is now on fire with your new goal being to bob and weave through flames, burning tree canopies as you jump from 40 feet drops all while trying to beat the shit out of your opponents and beat them in the race, and that's just the first level.

It's the kind of game you might see the cover of and think it's garbage shovelware made to cash in on the ATV offroad fury and extreme sports craze but it's an incredible game and very affordable too.

With discs yes, but it's a bit weird. Hard drive loading doesn't quite work? I heard there was some progress recently but the better method seems to be to use what's called POPStarter that forces the system into PS1 mode after the copy protection check for games. This lets you burn games, chuck em in the tray and plays them as if they were the real thing with 0 issues.

I know it's a fair bit of work, but you could always just copy the game names into a text editor, copy the entire thing into an alphabetizer, cull duplicate lines, and paste back the results and screenshot like that. Probably a bit more work, but it would fix the organization issue, and you could save the file if you needed it to edit in the future.

>Doesn't 180 seem low to you? I consider there to be about 60 must play original Xbox games, but I felt the number 300 or so would be more on point for the PS2.

Depends on your interests and what you consider parameters for "must play" on a particular system. There's a fair amount of games I personally like, some of which I'd consider must play and others not (for example, while I won't say I disliked WA4, it's not by any means a must play, and you'd probably do better with Alter Code if you wanted another WA; a lot of fans, at least on imageboards, seem rather iffy on games after 3 or ACF, depending on where they draw the line). Do you just mean amongst the best examples on the system? Do you wish to include multiplats that might be better on other systems? Considering you have some Japanese files, can you into moon? There are a fair amount of factors at hand.

>>15636284

I've been managing alright myself in trying to avoid paying full price, but I run my fat PS2 both with physical where feasible and HDD loading where not. Latter's probably the better way for people going forward, especially as prices continue to creep up (I have no fucking clue how BWT is pulling $150 these days; doesn't seem like the demand should be there even if it is rare), but I like having copies of games I like, so long as I'm not having to pay absurd prices, and loading grants access to fan-translations, bugfixes, undubs, and other possible "unofficial" content. Pick ups have slowed down some (not to the point of Gamecube slow, at least), between rising prices and an obvious lack of need to pick up copies of what I already have, compared to what I don't and still have interest in mind for. If I can manage a cheap price, fine, if not, there's loading.

>God Hand

Hope you didn't have to pay much for it. I got mine for $18 complete, but I'll admit that was some years back.

>>15636314

>>15636345

There's a few copies out my way, which seem promisingly complete, but at $30 each, I'm not sure if I want to drop the money, at least without trying it first (another perk to loading/emulation; assuming it works with any). And I certainly understand about wanting to look locally for actual inspection of what you're looking to buy, but sometimes, and perhaps more "somewhere" as the case might be, casting the net locally isn't apt to even find any copies. And with online, you can (and should, always) ask the seller for pictures of the case/cover/disc/manual/whatever before buying, rather than just trust their own description. Warehouse stored copies you'd have to write off though, as the seller no longer has access to them. Either way, do your best to avoid paying average prices if possible, though I'll admit I've had better luck with that through particular brick and mortar.

>>15636373

>>15636379

Where I live, there's a surprisingly high chance of finding the more niche Japanese games every so often. Whether or not they'll be at a good price though is another issue. Atelier Iris 1-3 are maybe $15-20 each (last ones I saw were $17), while BWT is $150 and very hard to come by (I got mine for $22 $11 with voucher complete last year). And while mentioning Atelier, Mana Khemia is about as common as the Iris games and about $20-25 these days, while MK2 is $50+ and hard to find.

Interestingly, the PAL version of BWT is apparently much cheaper than the NA one, though still kind of high at $45-50 worth from what I've seen. Not sure what's made the NA version get up to three to four times the price in comparison, aside from maybe HIDDEN GERMS faggotry. Used to be about $35 here a few years back; in retrospect, I'd been kicking myself a bit for not looking into it more at the time, until I lucked out even better than that.

>>15636441

PS2 is physically backwards compatible with PS1 discs, with minor incompatibility varying on model (mine if memory serves can't play Legend of Dragoon). As to loading, not as far as I'm aware. PS2's PS1 mode apparently doesn't recognize HDD storage as a means to possibly call from, since the PS1 didn't have that option. Now, you can play PS1 games via POPS, but that's emulation, not loading, and I'm not sure what compatibility is like with it there.

Well, out of curiosity, why isn't Okami in there, when the subsequent releases cut out the credits song and loading minigames? And while more action-JRPG, you have .hack//IMOQ but no G.U. (if the reason being Last Recode, apparently those versions are considered bad by imageboard .hack fans)? Just some things that stand out as missing at a glance. But again, point being that "must play" is not the same as "worthwhile." 180 games being possibly worthwhile, sure, I'd buy that; must play though, I'd say would be a good bit lower and outside of a certain amount of "should appeal to anyone" would still be kind of subjective. If you specifically want must plays, it's more apt that your stuff could use pruning than growing. I'm just saying.

Also,

Well, some of what you have already might be better on other systems. Phantom Brave for example, where I think the version with the most content is the PSP one, though I could be wrong (might be the Wii); really the only PS2 TRPG by NIS that didn't get ported elsewhere with extra content was Soul Nomad to my knowledge (might be a game to look into). Grandia II's PS2 port is also considered really subpar. Silent Hill 2 I'm not sure if you've got the Greatest Hits one (the v2.01 makes me suspect it, but I'm not familiar with that), but that has content backported from the Xbox version; Konami being too cheap and lazy to give it its own version here in NA unlike in PAL. It simply got bundled into the red banner Greatest Hits treatment instead.

I know some anons like Graffiti Kingdom as well (which has a predecessor in Magic Pengel on the same system; think I've heard combat's different), and I've seen at least one adamant about Dual Hearts being good (game's a successor to Alundra to my knowledge, which is similar to Zelda). Of course, downloading gives you some more freedom to grab whatever and decide later if you really want to keep it than having money invested in buying stuff.

You're missing Shadow of the Colossus and Legend of the Dragoon (or was that PS1?) OP. Other than that though, fantastic taste.

Legend of Dragoon was PS1. Same with Legend of Legaia and Legend of Mana, while on the topic of JRPGs starting with "Legend."

It was PS1 and it was terrible.

Legend of Dragoon is one of those games I've seen so much back and forth on over the years I honestly don't know if it's worth backlogging. It certainly seems to have sold quite well (better than most Sony owned JRPGs, even getting a Greatest Hits print), but it seems like either people really fucking love it, or really don't like it (though perhaps going in with an assumption from what fans say colors that worse than it might be).

I played it and loved it, but the english dub fucking sucks, it's awkward as all hell. I don't know if there's an undub, so if you can into moon just play the japanese version.

aren't most of the SATA adapters supposed to fuck with game compatibility though? i'd have done it by now if i'd heard otherwise

Not even going to give (((You))) a (You) for that horrendous bait. It's the PS2 nigger, not the PS3. It had the largest game library of the 6th generation consoles.

I had a fat PS2 I modded using the OSD method and I was running games off of it fine. I wanted to add more games so I plugged the hard drive into my adapter and it the same thing started sparking and smoking. Now the hard drive doesn't read in the PS2 or on the PC (obviously because the chinkadapter probably did this).

So where do I go from here? I was using the official Sony hard drive that came with Final Fantasy XI and I hear those are hard to come by and hard drives over 40gigs don't work and some drives don't work at all just because. Of course it has to be SATA as well. Of course I'd need a new adapter and I wouldn't go cheap this time.

Was thinking about just buying the games I want. I have most of them and I don't think it would be more expensive than getting a new hard and IDE adapter.

What about burning games to CD is that a thing? I remember the Mexicans (das racis) didn't buy a single PS1 game back in the day.

What make where you using, out of curiosity?

>I was using the official Sony hard drive that came with Final Fantasy XI and I hear those are hard to come by and hard drives over 40gigs don't work and some drives don't work at all just because.

I've got a IDE well above 40gb that's been working just fine with mine. Probably not the best make of drive, but you shouldn't need a proprietary drive for loading off of.

>Was thinking about just buying the games I want. I have most of them and I don't think it would be more expensive than getting a new hard and IDE adapter.

Depends on the games in question you want to play. Most common, mainstream games are still cheap, a lot at $10 or lower, at least where I live, but more have been going up of late (Samurai Western's like $70+ when it was $20 or so a year or two back, for example).

>What about burning games to CD is that a thing?

To DVD, yes. For some you'd have to find or convert them from being formatted for their original CD media to run off DVD. But I don't know if you'd need a modchip at this point to run them, or if FreeMcBoot alone would suffice. I don't think it would help you bypass region lock either if that's an issue (I could be wrong though), and laser life span is a thing.

I've been neglecting my PS2 for a while and I feel really bad for it. I just have too many games lined up in my backlog on other systems. I might sneak Ace Combat 5 in or some light gun games though.

Just pick up a new IDE drive. I got a used 500gb Seagate off craigslist for $5 that works great. No one wants IDE drives so they're cheap and don't be afraid of trying a used one.

Off Craigslist huh? I don't think most people would find any good results thag way. Finding old ones on ebay might be better luck. I wanna try a few things like the chink sata adapter or a good quality ide to sata adapter. I've had great results with the latter on my xbox.

Yeah I got lucky I guess. I'm using an official network adapter too so I could play online if I wanted to. The chink sata ones don't have real ethernet.
