I think one of the big point of contentions is that the translation is from a script of the PlayStation version. And he's cut and pasted it into the Super Nintendo version. So it's not probably going to be completely accurate for that reason. It would be interested in if the translator put up any notes for this.
From what I've heard about him he's a notorious Lefty that has an almost lethal case of Trump derangement syndrome.

If it's the PS1 script, wouldn't that at least cut down on work needed if someone wanted to "unofficially" port it back to the PS1 version? Or would it have to at least be matched up with the actual lines once more since I I'd assume the calls used in the SFC version differ somewhat? Obviously it would need dubugging and insertion regardless.
>>15635858
I know that usually once a game gets a patch it's considered "demand satiated" but that hasn't stopped the likes of Mystic Ark and Tales of Phantasia PS1 from getting separate patching efforts. Stupid to just cancel shit, especially if it's meant for use with a better version. But beyond that, how can they say the majority is cancelled, while still claiming to work on it? Do they just mean "put on the backburner?"

Don't forget not even releasing his Magical Drop 2 patch despite being done because it got an English release in some format and thus people should have to pay for it. The readme file has a small translation notes section, but it only mentions two changes to names. Do have to wonder though why, if both versions of a game are available, the earlier one tends to be the first chosen (this isn't the only case of it). Is it just easier to manage SFC insertion than PS1, or is it more that SFC/SNES emulation is more accessible and thus more people get to enjoy the game?

>What is it with modders and fan translators being the biggest pussies around?
Probably a difference between being in the scene out of actual liking for the games at hand as a fan, and being in it for the attention. AG having one of the largest amounts of finished translations under a single name that I've seen, that's reason for attention, and Zhi being the guy that's the "face" of it, of course he's going to have a huge ego. Now, I know that patches, especially for very text heavy games, can take a long time, between translation, editing, trimming (if need be; better to find workaround like variable width fonts), insertion, debugging, etc, but this faggot needs to realize that if he was getting spite, he brought it on himself. Two and a half years of no updates on his site for anything, much less his "priority" projects he left off with, coupled by a policy of instant blocks on twatter for those that wanted to know how or if things were going, anyone would get fucking annoyed and fed up. And that's not getting into the projects he's still had tied up, let alone what he was doing in his spare time instead. I'd wager if he wasn't a "muh feels" cuck before he started on this stuff way back when (I'm not real sure of his history), I'm sure the attention helped contribute to it.
Sure, he and others can claim that they're not doing this as salary work and can take as long as they want as a free service to others, but patience does have a limit when there's no obligation or even desire felt to keep people informed on how things have been going.

Sadly self centered faggots like him think all bad will towards them are just people who are jealous or "hating" on them for no reason.
For everyone not up their own ass its easy to see that blue balling people looking forward to your projects pisses them off and lack of info why makes it worse as people will naturally assume the worst, then on top of that complaining that the people excited are bothering you frequently while you make no effort to explain why its taking its time, its no surprise people are going to angry towards him and are going to """harass""" him.

fa0821 No.15637115

Checked. And yeah, actually having something to show for the time that's passed does a lot to remedy things. Before they went full "shut it down, series doesn't need fan-translators anymore", I actually liked how A0t used to do monthly reports on their projects. Or .hack//Translate; regardless of how one feels about Link (from what I've seen anons say, it's an iffy game), the guy behind it kept a progress report on the front page that was updated monthly or so, as well as actual posts reasonably often. It's just the proper way to do things if you wind up building a base of people interested. And as to "harassment", I have to wonder just what he even considers that to be. People making death threats? People just asking for updates he didn't want to type up and thus annoying him? Is asking a reasonable question grounds for "toxicity" or whatever?
>Didn't he also hold some of his translation hostage while 2016 elections were going on?

Does the Fate fanbase lack the autism to just take it upon themselves and fan-translate it instead? I know there's a sense of not wanting to waste time when it comes to other people possibly picking a game up, but there comes a point where it becomes fairly clear that either there's a disinterest in a game compared to other projects and/or a desire to just sit on shit out of the assumption that no one else will take it (AG being king of that hill). Beyond that, if that faggot has SJW tendencies, all the more reason someone that isn't should pick it up, since the quality of the final product stands to be questionable.
>>15637880
Because he a) is sitting on twenty-fucking-eight other projects as he's been doing for years now, b) spent two years giving no progress reports about anything and autoblocking anyone that asked on his twatter, and c) is now whining about the fanbase for this game without defining just what the "harassment" was. Had he not done (b) he likely could have avoided (c), as a little information on a reliable schedule does a lot to mollify people. Also hear he spent the better part of said two years just retweeting SJW shit, like that was a better use of his spare time than working on games he'd already announced, but I don't follow social media much myself, so it's not like I've actively followed it.
Seriously, six years from announce to patch release. Probably some people that had been interested that died in that amount of time. And that was a priority project (along with Romancing SaGa 2 and Lagrange Point).

>What gives this asshole any leverage?
Knowing moon. Actually, not even in his case. More likely that at ninety finished patches and nearly two decades of doing it for free, AG (and thus himself) are amongst some of the bigger names in the scene. I would assume that sniping games from a group like his is a fast way to get blacklisted from being able to get help and/or promotion, since people in the scene know other people in the scene, and unfortunately, there's yet more games he wants his name eventually on the patch for, and thus has put his ass down first on another twenty-eight. I have to wonder if he even has any personal liking for the games his group picks up at this point, or if it's more translators coming to him that are, and are looking for eventual insertion/debugging/promotional skills.
>Why would somebody give him the time of day if he's going to act like this?
Probably a mixture of the fact that games are already "claimed", and that (on the user end) this is a service they (as translators/hackers) don't have to provide. It's rare to see a game get multiple separate patching efforts, whether it's respect for the choice whoever it was made to pick it up in the first place, or not wanting their own plural effort to be wasted on account of the prior team putting out a finished patch first and thus satiating, or at least confusing, demand (I still am not sure of which patch for Mystic Ark is supposed to be better; it has two). There's nothing outright preventing it from happening, but still. And on the user end, when the options are either "deal with it because who knows if anyone else actually will pick it up," "don't play it ever because the patch got cancelled," or the same "go learn moon" that localization companies tell people, a lot are more apt to play the waiting game with the first option, assuming it does come out. But even then there is a limit to patience. And at this point I would assume (or rather hope) SMT fans are not amused with the lack of communication and now being labelled a "harassing" community.
Being able to provide a service that can be denied whenever, as well as control of how an entire language receives and perceives a game, likely gives a sense of power to be exerted. I'm not sure I'd say every group lets it go to their head, but he sure has, as likely have some others.

I think it's less to do with the lack of autism(trust me type moon fags are autistic as fuck) and more that most of the fanbase has yet to get fed up of him like most anons here(me included). There is a script for all the cutscenes for Gilgamesh's route out there and someone on jewtube is editing the script into gameplay footage and plans to be done by the time NA FGO releases the CCC event(if it gets it at all) so not everyone sitting around doing nothing. fa0821 No.15642184
>>15641787
I could admittedly be wrong as I don't know how much effort actually goes into the process of cracking, but it's probably not the same amount as fan translation. Competition can work out well when there's an expected short turn around for results; if some group gets a game cracked before another, it seems like it should be easy to move onto attempting to crack another game without there being much lost, and if it takes everyone longer, it's more likely that approaching it from different angles is more apt to yield results. Meanwhile with fan translation it can be years, even over a decade in one particular case, of time and effort involved, and when a patch is expected to suffice for serving the entire demand for the game in a given language, other people that might have been interested in translating are more likely to find something else of interest that isn't being worked on to invest their energy into.

Yeah, for Manga scanlations you see a fair amount of sniping and drama regarding who is translating what. But it's vastly easier to do such a thing like that than tackling an entire video game romhack.
Speaking of DDS too, didn't they do Kyuuyaku even with someone else working on it or were they the only ones handling the Megami Tensei games?
bc0eb2 No.15642208

The amount of work required doing a full translation patch generally discourages sniping and therefore one of the competitive drives for cracking and other forms of translation. DDS released the patch through aerie.wingdreams (KaioShin and Kingcom's site) as a host site, though RHDN also hosts a page and the patch since as well. The release of Kyuuyaku's patch released before the patches for the Famicom originals; Megami Tensei I FC taking until this year to be released (Tom there having been on it, along with Stardust Crusaders and Esperknight), while Megami Tensei II FC is still incomplete (by Dushbadge), though listed as "undropped" (I want to say I recall hearing one of the Famicom efforts was dropped as a result of Kyuuyaku finishing, so maybe it was this one). I don't see any separate efforts listed as incomplete for Kyuuyaku, just a pair of addendums. If DDS wasn't working with those two translators from the start, maybe they decided to team up and thus combined a translation and hacking effort. And the Famicom versions look to have been by entirely different groups
DDS is also listed as having been on hacking for Tom with Last Bible.

Played SMTIV, then Apocalypse, then Raidou 1. Now I'm onto Raidou 2.
Don't play Apocalypse: I waited and waited the whole game for the massacre ending to justify the amount of cringe in the story, but the payoff never came. Let me tell you exactly what Apocalypse is - set this in stone and teach it in school:
APOCALYPSE IS A JOKE MOD FOR SMTIV
Raidou 1 was an entirely different beast. Very classy, until the story explodes in the finale into total anime bullshit. But that's normal for all Atlus games. It is true that the real time gameplay feels limited (you spend half the game oneshotting enemies in melee, then the other half waiting for demons to do the job for you) but be wary of the monkey paw effect, as the sequel undoes those mistakes with a very heavy handed approach that brings as many problems, albeit different ones.

It doesn't even matter since it's a SNES rom those are fucking everywhere. > Actually been curious as to what all he does, and if there's a chance he's vengefully shat shit up.
I think he does everything but translation, localization included. I remember someone mentioning he and a translator had differences over this.
I remember clearly he promoted his translation on twitter many years ago. Something about how it was already playable and he'd share it in a PAX convention. I do not remember if he went silent right after that or not but the timing about this other group taking on the project is suspiscious to say the least.
I wonder if it's an ego thing. Like he wants *his* name to be over all the translation patched roms. The way romhacking aerie foiled this by suddenly releasing a KMT full translation patch seems funny this way.
> Is it just easier to manage SFC insertion than PS1, or is it more that SFC/SNES emulation is more accessible and thus more people get to enjoy the game?
Both. Gideon definitely has more experience with snes things so it makes sense he chose that over the PS1 version.
> Stupid to just cancel shit, especially if it's meant for use with a better version
It really depends. If the patch was shit, then yes maybe it needs a better version but people would need to play through the game first to see if it holds. I think it will. It basically seems to use the same codebase as SMT1 and 2 so everything Gideon has learned with those roms, he could apply to this one.
As an aside, there are interesting guides on his site but it's pretty condescending at the same time.

Adding onto these two posts, Phantasy Star IV got a "relocalization" patch. Apparently it fixes translation issues and removes censorship, which is good, but at the same time, the guy that did it is apparently a fan of how Working Designs handled things, which I'm not sure bodes well for overall quality:
>One of the 16-bit era’s hall-of-fame RPGs has received a Phantastic makeover!
>Phantasy Star IV was one of SEGA’s best RPGs, with great story, character interaction, and gameplay, but the English translation was merely adequate. It suffered from awkward, often laughable dialog, as well as many mistranslations that were meant to tie the 2,000-year-long story of the previous three games together.
>Among the goofiest translation choices:
>Misnaming the planet “Palma” to “Parma”, which is a suburb of Cleveland.
>The main character yelling “I’m not going to fight for no mission!” at a pivotal story moment.
>An emotional goodbye between bros punctuated with “You silly!”
>And so on.
>The patch author, Chris Hatala – “GhaleonUnlimited”, was surprised that a Phantasy Star IV hack fixing the series references was never tackled, so he decided to learn what ROM hacking was all about.
>Thanks to the help and support of two other fan-project leaders – vivify93 and lory1990 on RHDN – Chris was able to completely rewrite the script where needed and inject it into the game, along with adding bugfixes, fixing censorship, and allowing for player preference in which script they wanted to play.
>Also, thanks to their help and also great resources online, the original Japanese was used to best match the original creators’ intentions.
>Being a big fan of the breezy dialog and whimsical nature of the Lunars on SEGA CD, Chris aimed to add a naturalness to the dialog, as well as accentuate each character’s personality.
>He also added humor that was appropriate to the established universe and tone of the game, because much of the game’s funnier moments were lost in translation or were simply missed opportunities in the original script.
>Now that English fan translations of the brilliant SEGA AGES remakes of Phantasy Star 1 and 2 have been completed, this project was meant to link both both the classic translations together but also these new exciting developments in the Phantasy Star world.
>At version 1_48, most of the text errors and bugs should be fixed. The author hopes that this relocalization will give 16-bit RPG fans who missed out on PSIV – as well as long-time PS fans – a reason to revisit one of classic gaming’s best RPG story arcs!
Suffice to say I'm more than a bit leery.

>Raidou 1
>iconic and fitting story for the MC
>theme of modernization of japan
>nicely lived and trafficked levels
>unimaginative gameplay that only begins to shine in later parts
>story explodes into japanese nonsense at the end
>Raidou 2
>story unrelated to the roaring 20s setting
>shoehorned or bad taste story elements
>new levels are heavier on fantasy and interesting, but the old ones carried from the first game are empty shells (making it feel more of an expansion, than its own thing)
>gameplay is way more enjoyable and varied than Raidou 1, but it's incredibly easy to get overpowered and oneshot bosses
>story becomes distasteful at 1/3 of the way, then nothing happens for the rest of the game
I start to believe that the japanese know how to start stories, but not how to end them.

If you haven't already figured it out. Get a clean ROM of SMT If…, make sure the file size matches the number listed in the translation patches README. It should have no header if they do.
Then use: http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/1040/ and it's simple. You just locate the patch file, then the ROM, select your output folder and you have your complete product.
