What's the next REALLY big thing in video games? For the last 10 years it seems games have emphasized all different sorts of "leveling" systems and a focus on multiplayer.
I'm not saying that's inherently bad, but it feels as though its almost mandatory to have this quasi-rpg element in every single game; not everything needs to be about getting experience. I think Blizzard did it right with Overwatch, where though there is experience, it does not tie in to your character's overall attributes and is instead entirely based on "skill".
Though Overwatch is an example of the next big trend, which is the multiplayer-only bandwagon that's seemed to pop up as of late. There's no coherent story or single player campaign, and that's really upsetting because the game is already shit and it would be nice to get something for our money.
It seems that so much of the game industry is about competition rather than creating a game that's about challenging the player. It's really disappointing that more and more, we're seeing the devs lazily require players themselves to be the "challenge" instead of creating boss battles and enemies to be overcome. It's really unfair to the consumer.
Then again, the direction we could be looking at is a more "artistic" take where its all about "taking in" a game rather than being given a challenge, which means video games are fucking dead. It also means devs should be forced into the military and put on the front line.
But anyhow, where are we going? What's the future of the industry?
