It is also related to wanting to play it while it is fresh and looks its best, before it is outclassed and the gameplay elements are copied.
Games do lose their luster; very few remain enjoyable to play some years after their release.
Saying that, the only pressure I ever had was to have a game at the same time as a friend, and the last example of that was neverwinter nights, which was a massive disappointment. Before that I hadn't bought a brand new game for years.
