I was led to believe that this was some kind of magnum opus of fun third person combat. I've been avoiding playing it for years because I was afraid of being disappointed.

I've been playing it on and off for a few days. I'm not very far into the game, and just beat elvis, but it seems really underwhelming so far. The combat seems okay, but I'm not really able to get into the meat of using it properly since I'm always hamstrung by the camera and lockon. I thought this was just a Git Gud, but I'm starting to wonder because I can trivialize almost all the fights by using stomp or knocking enemies into the corner and then wailing on them when they're away from friends, but I still can't get he camera to behave.

Stomp is a meme move that does low damage and leaves you vulnerable to other enemies. Are you playing on easy?

not true at all. most of the time hardest difficulties force the user to play games like a stealth game. or abuse some boring meta, or the enemies just become damage sponges.

this makes the game alot less fun because what's fun is rarely viable on harder difficulties in poorly designed games.

The ones pushing the meme " the harder/cheaper cpu is, the better the better the game is" meme are just tryhard faggots.

Bullshit, all hard mode does is lock you at max level for the whole game. It REMOVES a whole mechanic from the game.

The dynamic difficulty is better because enemies get more pissed and aggressive the better you do and the more you taunt them.

c17541  No.15624420

It gets harder as you go on and the better you get

The highest difficulties are crushing

0a3058  No.15624449

> It REMOVES a whole mechanic from the game.

In the case of God Hand this isn't a problem since optimal play on lower difficulties would see you staying at Level Die an entire level. It's why the game boos and jeers you when you lose a level. Playing on Hard is just keeping you in the state you would be in if you were playing well, without holding back regardless of your actual play. Which is the challenge of that mode.

>>15624002

I've only really found that RPG's have horrible hard modes. At least for action-adventure games enemies have new patterns in addition to more health, but RPGs just change the ratio of damage dealt/damage taken and turns every boss battle into a 30min war of attrition.

Granted I don't do much modern gaming anymore.

<Turning up the difficulty shows how shit the game really is

Why is this a problem with harder difficulties, it just shows that the developers didn't make a good game.

800729  No.15625076

>>15624449

A good RPG hard mode makes resistances more exaggerated, so you need to know what spells or types of attacks to use on which enemies.

0a3058  No.15625731

>>15625076

While not hard mode in the literal sense. The NG+ versions of Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter are one of the better "hard Modes" I can find in an RPG. The game changes enemy encounters across the entire game so where you would have previously fought a group of bats will be replaced with say, goblins with a hobgoblin leader.

I can't think of any RPGs I've played that had variable difficulties that did that. At best Dark Souls 2 let you change the difficulty with either that one covenant or the bonfire item.

What are you on about? While interesting, the SOL system in BoFV makes subsequent runs actually easier (and it's supposed to do that, unfortunately it can also be abused for grinding) since there are encounters that are too strong to actually win on a first playthrough without using dragon form, even though it's not at all impossible to finish the game without using it. I played it recently and don't remember any encounter changes throughout the game, care to mention some?

Nevertheless the game is pretty good, it really doesn't deserve all the bad reputation it gets.

0a3058  No.15625901

>>15625836

If you had played using the SOL than you should have noticed enemies were altered. The first area is more fresh in my memory because of the realization that this happens, and it replaces a lot of the minor goblin enemies and bats with larger goblin variants and even the minotaur enemies from later sections in the game. I can't remember if bosses were altered, but at the very least overworld enemies were. And I want to say you see less slime creatures in the ice sector and bio-labs in place of other creatures from later in the game.

>the SOL system in BoFV makes subsequent runs actually easier

Well yes and no. This depends on how you are playing subsequent iterations. If you start from the beginning and treat each run as 1cc. Than the difficulty does increase since enemies are harder and it may force you to use more Dragon form which shortens the timer on your 1 life. This is the observation from when I was trying to tackle my 1/4 run. (which I sadly never finished)

If you just reset whenever you want and play from the last save point it obviously trivializes any aspect of difficulty because you have all the D-meter to burn for any encounters you want, hence why grinding becomes very easy. So it really does depend on how you are utilizing the SOL system.

e06663  No.15625966

>>15625901

Well, I never used SOL Restore, only Restart when finishing a run, but I did use all the stuff from the previous runs, so that's probably why I didn't really notice the changes.

> If you start from the beginning and treat each run as 1cc.

Well I did think about doing that, but it's not what the game expects you to do. Really wish I had though, but I just wanted to blast through it to get a good d-ratio to unlock all the stuff. Maybe I'll replay it sometime on the same savefile but throwing all my stuff away and starting from zero. And without abusing the fairy colony

0a3058  No.15626132

>>15625966

>so that's probably why I didn't really notice the changes.

Yeah just booted up my game and I had a file I had just restarted with. Another change is that you get new cutscenes based on your D-ratio as well which are highlighted with an [SOL] indicator on the bottom when they appear. Even in the very beginning of the game. The cutscenes themselves don't give a lot of new info most of the time, just flesh out events and show events that would spoil an initial playthrough as some characters shown hadn't been introduced yet.

>Well I did think about doing that, but it's not what the game expects you to do

I think that may be the opposite, or rather both are intended uses. The game has new content with at least a couple of replays as you get access to those locked doors that respond to your current D-ratio. And with new enemy encounters and cutscenes. I think the intended way to play was to keep doing consecutive replays to get yourself to 1/4 and achieve the true ending. And you can't get a good D-ratio if you restore from a save as the game resets your progress on anything done prior to that save meaning any chests you found are no longer counted as opened. You do need to have opened a number of them for the best rating at the end of the game.

>throwing all my stuff away and starting from zero

you keep all your equipped items, Skills, Party XP, money, and stored gear across either Restart or Restore so the end goal is to grind yourself so you have the base resources to do the best possible run at the highest speed which is needed to get the true ending. But you have to do it all from the beginning without dying or resetting a save.

e06663  No.15626198

>>15626132

By not noticing the changes I meant just the encounters, the rest of content unlocking of course I was aware and it was the reason I kept playing. I don't know what you mean by "achieving the true ending" though, since a d-ratio of 1/256 already lets you see all the locked content the game has (except for maxed out dragon blade which is at 1/8, 1/4 is actually just bragging rights AFAIK). I think my last playthrough was on 1/128.

>>15626198

> I don't know what you mean by "achieving the true ending"

I'm confusing 1/4 with the lower ratio needed for the full ending.

e06663  No.15626368

>>15626241

No I mean, the ending I got on my first playthrough was the same I got on all subsequent playthroughs, I don't think the final FMV is affected by D-ratio in any way, unless you mean something else like the SOL scenes before that.

>>15626368

>unless you mean something else like the SOL scenes before that.

It might be scenes before the ending. I think I remember at least one new scene going into the final boss. But I also thought the ending had changed with a higher D-ratio as well. It's been years and I could be wrong.
