It's mostly on your end, yes.
If you don't understand the basic purpose of styles like Trickster or Swordmaster you should have started with DMC3 instead of 4, and not moved on until you at least had some grasp of the basic combat. There's not too much anons could tell you that you couldn't figure out on your own by playing the game a few times and experimenting.
If you really just want to apply yourself to this one there's this series (embed) which explains some of the more advanced techniques, and here's an example of the carpel tunnel-inducing techniques you'd have to use to truly get good at Dante.

I know some high-level DMC3 players like XLHGladiator never clicked with style switching at all. Seriously, if this is your first time with the game and series you'd be better off with 1 or 3 as an entry point.
