Anyway, I always preferred the sports games from the GB/GBA because the RPG elements kept it interesting and it's a shame it doesn't return in later installments. Double Dash is the pinnacle of the Mario Kart series. The first 3 Mario Party games were good, 2 being the best but have a lack of interest in later installments. 64 was fun, but Odyssey really shines as a top game. Sunshine was underrated. Super Mario World and SMB3 are the best 2D games and many of the "New" Super Mario Bros games feel soulless.

The modern sports games aren't as well received as the classics. The Gameboy and Gameboy Advanced Mario sports games are considered to be the greatest for solid gameplay and RPG segments staring original anime characters you play as. I used to play a lot of Mario golf for the 64, I thought Plum was cute.

Which one? There's quite a few. I assume you mean Switch. I've usually preferred Nintendo D-Pads to Sony ones, the dualshocks have very mushy D-Pads in my experience, though they might be worn down from use and age. I like the 3DS one, though wish it was a tad bigger. Switch Pro Controller has a damn good one.

All of them have their own certain charm. But I feel 3D Mario hasn't been done to the best ability that the 2D games have. Each 2D game peaks in some aspect or another, but none of the 3D games have that same satisfaction to them.

Mario Superstar Baseball. Shame the Wii version was shit and it doesn't look like we'll be getting another anytime soon. I'm surprised there hasn't been a Mario sports game that's a made-up sport.

They're 80% recycled content, there is nothing substantial added and all they did was remove a bunch of unique sprites and cameos so they wouldn't have to put in any effort. Plus all the music remixes are extremely underwhelming compared to the original. The only flaw the original had was that there was no hard mode, and the remake didn't even add that.

World had many cool ideas that were never utilized that well. Mainly the Cape, I never found to be used in an interesting way. I think it's why it's so popular for romhacks, the mechanics are solid, just the stage design doesn't utilize it well.
On a more personal note, I preferred the stage settings of 3 over World. The ones in World never really struck a chord with me. Found the enemies to be quite lame too, and the bosses to be absolute shit.

I'm that guy who always tells people to play Super Marip Advance 4's World e. You have even less of an excuse now that Nitnendo released a modified version with all the levels on the Wii U eShop, because somebody extracted it and now you can pirate it super easy. The only thing that could possibly be better for the game is if somebody ever finished a level editor that could export the level to eReader dotcode format so you could play edited levels on a real cartridge if you wanted to. If only because I'm a sucker for shit like that. At least LuigiBlood is working on something similar for the Satelleveiw right now, so my need is slightly satiated.

Or do you mean all the tiles/objects/enemies are on the cart? If that's what you mean, also of course that's the case. The dotcodes just contain the sequencing for all that. Yeah, they made 38 levels when you could only store 32. Granted a few are remakes of levels from the first game, but still. That's the advantage of the eShop version. In fact, the only thing I find baffling is that they didn't bother making the Goomba Shoe a proper power-up. It's even worse because they made a fucking boomerang that operates incredibly similarly, and added that as a scanable power up. They know people like the shoe.

Aside from the fact that World has slightly different physics, it's more about the fact that it could be done with mostly unmodified hardware. Compare this to loading NES roms in Animal Crossing from an edited GameCube Memeory card.

Actually, two interesting things about that. Firstly, you can actually use that to load mods into Animal Crossing. Secondly, the NES roms found in the game actually use the same header that their Virtual Console releases have. So if you've ever heard that Nintendo downloaded their own roms off the internet, maybe you're right. But given that it's from the early 2000's, that's a bit iffy. It's much more likely they just hired somebody. iNES contributed I hear? Not to mention that Nintendo has several rom releases that actually have even more data than the dumps online at the time.

Speaking of hacks, I hacked my 2006 Wii. It runs NES, SNES, GB/GBA, Genesis, Game Gear and Master System emulators. Wii64 emulator was shit when I hacked it, so I rely on N64 WADs, one OOT one that got injected with the gold cartridge version of OOT. Playing all these games with a Gamecube controller. These games on top of the wii games and gamecube games in the collection make it a great retro machine. I hear that last year Wii64 got picked up again by others to fix the issues.

I like the koopalings as an idea and feel like their potential hasn't been fully tapped. One of the only good parts from Paper Jam were the world building cutscenes involving the koopalings and their involvement in the upcoming Bower's Inside Story remake side story is going to be the only reason I even pirate that game. The only problem is finding a good genre that they can fit.

3d Mario, he was always quite good at pushing boundaries with 2d but since 3d they've kind of neglected his 2d outings, Donkey Kong is great though, that's a good 2d series.
Probably World or the original, I like the way that worlds levels are interconnected, and Yoshi is a stand out addition to the genre.
Super Mario Odyssey so far, I think I would like it a lot more if they just had sliding and handled momentum better for wall kicks, the level design is on point most of the time.
3d world was great, I think it's heavily underrated, it's worst aspect is that it's playable single player.
I've only played Seven Stars and Mario and Luigi, so Mario and Luigi definitely, I prefer the combat and visual style, as well as the story.
I don't much like the sports games
I don't really play Mario Party, the mini games in Super Mario Party look great, shame that it has so few boards or else I would have brought it.
Mario is easily the epitome of gaming, he's not inherently marketable but in spite of this he holds a prominent position within games and within contemporary culture, he's completely changed the landscape of video games more than once and has established multiple genres of video games, there isn't anything in gaming like him. And this is not a dismissal of the multiple achievements of other gaming series which easily earn their place in the pantheon of gaming, even the forgotten ones like Thief and Ultima.

Personally for emulating on consoles I go with the Wii U, if only because it's got the advantage of pirating the few good Wii U games and a native DS emulator that isn't too bad from what I can tell. im mostly bothered by how the art style has stayed the same throughout the "new super mario bros" series. before their second game every prior mario game had a vastly different setting, art style and music.
i dont think 2d mario has overstayed its welcome, just nsmb. theyre still fun, but they could be more so.
perhaps some of this is due to hardware reaching a point that theyre able to perfectly recreate the character exactly as they intended and so a shift in art style is never forced in that regard.
as for the open 3d games, even though the art style hasnt changed too drastically since sunshine the overall themes and settings between the games are completely different.

Mario 3, easily. Nearly every single time I go and replay it, I always find something new about it that I didn't know or realize before. For example, I found out this year that the waterfalls in 5-4 were supposed to represent rainfall.

Odyssey is a distant second, and even then only by carrying over the comfy two-controller scheme from the Galaxy games and combining it with better handling. Otherwise, it's piss easy and wastes a lot of the potential it had, especially with the final boss. Pic very much related, this was what I was hoping would happen the moment I heard about the possession gimmick and would have been infinitely better than a rehash of an earlier fight.

Galaxy 1/2 if it counts for this instead, otherwise 3D Land. I am a sucker for jazz/big band music but the 3DS game had better pacing and a better final boss.

Galaxy, 64 then Odyssey. I think I put 64 above Odyssey because of that strange eerie feeling that N64 level graphics seemed to give Nintendo games. Its close though.

Why is 2D Mario so boring now? There's no sense of inspiration or adventure anymore. Sure, they maybe well made in the gameplay aspect, but they're boring to look at and they're painfully generic. We used to have things like Giant Land, Pipe Land, Donut Plains, Star World, all of Super Mario Land 2, but now it's generic Plains, Desert, Snow, Water, Lava, Cloud, etc. Are they worried about taking risks or is it that these games are being handled by B-teams full of newbie employees? I mean, there are plenty of other things you could do with a Mario game. That being said, what sort of theming or areas would you like to see in Mario games?

Both. NSMB sold loads so they just started churning them out using whoever they had not working on other franchises. They seem to be more willing to be creative again nowadays, especially as they have a successful console again but so far all we've heard about 2D Mario is a NSMBU port.

I really like 64/Odyssey Mario the most, the only problem i have is the stupid amounts of excess stars Odyssey has. It's ridiculous when you have to start buying the fucking things from the store to get 100%. Is there even a point to getting them all? It used to be TTYD, but Paper Mario is deader than dead to me. I hate the older games now, due what's been done after the first 3. And the original was my favorite game and first RPG when I was 10. TTYD was the first game I preordered in my life. I despise the series now. Even if they come out with one that continues the style of the first two games I won't buy it. Mario RPG is my favorite now.

It's mostly 3D World. They introduce a fifth playable character, and they make it Rosalina, the one that, as you've pointed out, was a major character in one game, an end cameo in the sequel to that game, and otherwise had nothing to her name. That soured a lot of people on her, especially when it was compounded with all her fanboys touting her as the deepest character in Mario ever, purely because she had an incredibly tangential backstory with no presence in her observable character.

Not necessarily, Miymoto designed Donkey Kong and Mario. But it was Yoichi Kotabe who designed the iconic look from the 90's we are familiar with today thanks to the Mario 2,3 & World manuals. I don't know who did the "donkeykongflyer.jpg" here >>15629968 ; it may or may not have been Kotabe.
