For me it's a mix of obsessiveness and a desire to learn. Let's say I play Ocarina of Time, I enjoy it, so I have a look at the series. I see that the first game was Legend of Zelda, so I play that. I like to think about how the series progressed to where it is today. It's actually quite interesting to see how BoTW shares some similarities with the original. Maybe I might look at other games the developer made. So then I'll have a look at the Mario games or something.
Maybe I decide I enjoy platformer games, and I want a deeper understanding of that genre. So then I start considering games like Banjo, Spyro, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Sonic, etc, etc. If you take this approach, you'll quickly end up with a list of thousands of games you want to play at some point.
I guess it's just a desire to learn how everything ties together. How one game inspired other games, how a particular genre came to exist. Whether you consider that useful knowledge or not is up to the individual. Personally I like to have that knowledge.
