There's the AtariBox/Atari VCS, which is a scam and doesn't actually work. They were supposed to be using Linux on their console but showcased Tempest 4K, a game that didn't even have a Linux Build. There was another picture where they were suspected of using an Xbox One with custom analog sticks.
Then there was the Retro VGS/Coleco Chameleon, which was a clone console using an FPGA, that had multiple fake prototypes, one of which was an SNES junior, the other being a random video capture card.
I also remember Commodore making phones that were rebranded overpriced chink phones, sold for 2.5 times the price.

I have checked some reports and can now confirm it really is a touch screen on the controllers. There seems to be exactly one thing the design is good for. All sorts of board games and card games have that feature, but it's unusual for a console. The Dreamcast could do it, but only if you bought several VMUs (a sort of memory card with a screen and also buttons you could play extremely primitive games on). And those things stored very little, so I only got a third-party memory card with four times the storage and without a screen. The Gamecube could do it by linking the machine with GBAs, but this thing finally has the feature right out of the box. What I mean is local multiplayer with hidden information. (WiiU doesn't fully count here, because it could only use one screen for asymmetric multiplayer.)
If they change the price to something below $100 and learn what face buttons are, this has the potential to become mildly interesting.

I thought a lot about their concept today and came to the conclusion that the specs are too high. Consider the following:
A common disease among designers is that they make the text too small. This even applies to designers who are very intelligent about just anything else than this. How is grandma supposed to read that? If the screens on the pads had a resolution of just 96×64 (greyscale & backlight) while keeping the size, there would be a good technical limit to how small the letters could get. I also don't like having virtual buttons on a flat touch screen. If they stripped down the touch feature to just having 12 spots, they could put a (transparent) physical grid over the screen, so you could get a good intuitive feel where each button is.
Now consider that the console comes not with one pad, but two. This change could make the thing quite a bit cheaper.
