It's probably best to assume that any kind of online play is totally fucked still, and will likely stay that way for good. But in all honesty the sheer perks of having CFW outweigh not being able to play online.

Also, if you're on a firmware that a base game supports, you can install update/dlc .nsps even if they require higher firmware by using Tinfoil. It gives you the option when installing to ignore the firmware requirement in an .nsp. For example, Dark Souls just released and the base game requires 5.1.0 and the day one update requires 6.0.0. I installed them on my 5.1.0 Switch with Tinfoil and chose the "Ignore Required Firmware" option and it plays fine. If I hadn't, it would have given me a prompt to update my system firmware when trying to launch the game.
