I have a confession to make. I have not played SM64 until now and I would like to get into the game since it's been known to be one of the most popular games of all time. I wonder if there are any "patches" (60FPS etc.)I need to put in the ROM before I can boot it up in Project 64. Also I feel that using a F310 Logitech controller is extremely difficult for the game. Is it because the game was designed to be played with difficult controls or am I just retarded and I have to keep practicing?
2ef2f5 No.15604750
>am I just retarded
Yes.
The 60fps patch is unfinished and was shat out in a week as a patreon request. Just play the original. You'll have occasional graphical inaccuracies but you won't notice them without playing the original.
Also, I played it first with a keyboard on a fucking potato and had no problem, so you have no excuse, unless you've never played a platformer in your life. You have a shit controller, but it should still be serviceable. Just git gud.

No one cares if you haven't played it. People will care if you're going to pretend that not having played is some great sin though.

Thing about SM64 was that it was meant to be played with an N64 controller.
You can say a lot of bad things about that controller, however it had an incredibly precise analog stick that was way easier to do fine movements with than any modern controller since.
If you're just planning on playing the game with a 360 controller you're gonna experience some major headaches as you fall of tight planks and struggle to finesse the harder parts.

I would agree with you if the joystick didn't slack off and lose the capacity for full range of motion within a year. It's probably not coincidental that many early N64 games had sections requiring fast joystick rotations.

Mine lasted pretty long, but I only had ocarina of time, banjo kazooie, mario kart and golden eye.
Mario party is probably the big controller killer. Also the stick losing sensitivity fast is an indication that it is sensitive in the first place.

But it still has the best movement of a 3D Mario game. Every other game has outright nerfed the moves from 64 in order to push their gimmicks. Odyssey almost had it beat, but, like the others, it decided to gimp the rest of Mario's movement to make the hat the only real useful option in the game. And don't get me started on 3D Land/World.

OP here, I managed to get 5 stars on the first stage, is the first level relatively the same difficulty as the rest? Stupid question but I'm wondering since the controls are a bit wonky.

Play Dark Savior before you make dumb posts like these. Super Mario 64 has sub-par camera controls, but they're alright after a while and you can easily get used to them. Dark Savior literally is an isometric platformer with death pits and traps all over the place that only has a fixed camera. That's a broken camera system for a platformer

Tbh I didn't play it even though i owned a n64 in 1998, i used to hate on it for radically changing mario from 2D to 3D, i saw it more as a spin off, used to think they would soon release a "real" mario game, it took them ages to release the mario DS game, by then i couldnt tell what had happened to Mario, that woohoo wahaa faggot wasnt the Mario i knew and the games were now super easy and child friendly, i stopped caring about Mario Universe shit altogether, that was until *baby Rosalina & Daisy* became a thing.

The only real issues with Mario 64 are camera and gating level progression. A perceived slight is that its levels are big and empty: but that's not how they were seen back then, a giant flat green field in Mario 64 was as lively as a valley in some big adventure game today.
