Yeah, I saw guy on YouTube who got a free package from Ubisoft with all the toys, while he had fun playing and reassembling all his crazy amount of ship parts and then showing a quick camera shot and commenting of all the packaging rubbish it leaves behind it, I would imagine that average player will not get all the ships, weapons and pilot toys (or some who just stay with the default included ship) leaving them with a less fulfilling experience of the same game.
It's also important to point out that Xbone and PS4 only have the default ship in the base game, while the Switch version gets the physical Arwing and a digital version of the default ship, so Switch owners already get more mix and match ship customization just from their version of the base game.
There was also the incentive from some retailers to get the (temporary) exclusive Star Tail furry cat alien pilot not to be confused with Star Fox for free when pre-ordering so that could have potentially driven up early purchases.
