I use the default or canon name if there is one. If the character is meant to be me, like Animal Crossing, I use my real middle name. If there is no canon name and the character is not supposed to be me, I come up with something that fits the character/time period/setting.

Expanding on that thought, I actually developed a theory that was basically physiognomy, but for usernames instead of physical features. It was remarkably accurate.

I enter a variant of my username if its online, the canon name of the protagonist if its single player, or my real name if its single player with a generic player character. Now burn this thread and never look back

I always have to use the canon name, or whatever seems like the canon name. In Pokemon Gen II, I would always put the Rival's name as "???" because that's what it tells you his name is in the first battle, and I have no better idea. Later you get confirmation that the canon names from Gen 1 are Red and Blue, so it would follow that in Gen II their names are Gold and Silver, but in the Gen II remakes, the protagonist's canon name isn't Gold, it's Ethan. Then people still just call the rival Silver, but if the main guy isn't Gold, then I don't think it follows to call the rival Silver. So I've gone back to calling him "???". I'll end up doing research beforehand to find out if there is a canon name in the game, which is risky since sometimes that leads you to spoilers if you aren't careful.

If I really can't find any hint of a canon name, I end up using characters from The Plane Scene from The Dark Knight Rises. Most of my characters are based on CIA these days.
